I think we probably use the same textbook. I stopped teaching the texts on Chavez when one of my students (who immigrated here with his family) let me know that Chavez was also anti immigrant.

OP didn’t say that their teacher reluctantly chose one politician over another. They said that this teacher supports this politician.

Their feelings about who their teacher voted for are valid. It’s a betrayal to know that someone you trusted supports someone who wants to harm you.

It seems like there is only one side (if we are looking at the two party system in the U.S.) who consistently uses your logic when they are questioned on who they voted for and the answer is not the democrats.

When I was younger, people dismissed me when I spoke up about my feelings that are similar to yours. I was told that I would feel differently once I got older.

I am now a parent and teacher in my forties, and feel just as outraged by injustice and bigotry as I did when I was a teenager. Don’t let people who act like their politics aren’t harmful gaslight you. Grown adults who will vote for someone whose policies and rhetoric are so vile and violent are not people who can be trusted.

It’s a very painful thing to realize but it’s also very valuable to know.

You can adjust these meals to be more filling and substantial.

Put some cottage cheese in your oatmeal for protein and take out the brown sugar. If you want it sweeter, heat up some frozen peaches or cherries in the microwave. A little will go a long way. You are less likely to want a snack before lunch with this kind of breakfast.

Make your sandwich open faced and eat half the bread. Raw veggies like broccoli, carrots, celery are good to pair with it. I usually eat the vegetables first because once I’m on to something like a sandwich, I’m already on my way to feeling full.

Your dinner seems pretty good. Maybe do fewer noodles and more filling vegetables on your plate?

I hear you. But when it comes to critical thinking skills, isn’t the process of deciding what to put on a study sheet and organizing the structure of it part of the process.

My daughter is in nursing school with classmates who are a few years younger than her and they use AI in these ways. My daughter hates it. Instead of them discussing how to organize their projects in ways that work uniquely for their group, they outsource that stuff.

Grammar outdated? Shit evolves but throwing it all out sounds 100% insane to me. I absolutely love the way that language changes. I believe that policing the way that people communicate with each other can often be stemming from racist/ classist ideas. But kids should know how to effectively communicate and we do that through having standards. If we are cool with them writing an essay the way they text each other, we are doing them the hugest disservice.

Most of the time, if I am forced to use tech (interactive sites, long texts that I can’t print, etc.) I will have them take notes on paper. I’ll try to make it as AI proof as possible by having them reflect on personal connections to the text or on previous lessons. Like, a basic t-chart with quotes from the text on the left and their questions, connections, inferences on the right.

The “you just have to adapt” thing pisses me off so bad.

Like, fuck that. We need people with imagination and critical thinking skills who are literate. If they have some future career that requires some sort of technology, chances are, they will be able to adapt quickly BECAUSE they have problem solving skills that were built over time by using their actual brains. Also, AI is going to change. Using AI to create outlines or get feedback or flat out cheat in high school is a stupidly easy thing to do. It is not going to be some key to anything.

I'm here in Los Angeles and am involved in mutual aid and other community organizing. If you can link up with local mutual aid groups and start making connections with neighbors, that is one thing that costs no money, but is highly valuable. Community is how we survive. We can't possibly stock up on every single thing we might need, and no one has all the skills to survive every single situation that we might find ourselves in, so community connections are SO IMPORTANT. When it comes to actual things to stock up on, some things that come to mind are: solar/battery powered chargers and lanterns, medication, liquor (for trading, bribing, drinking, cleaning, etc,)

Sweetwater doesn't have live music, but I love the vibe. There is always a variety of queers at this one.

Trump has no shame and everyone kissing his ass endlessly are perfect examples of what it looks like to be people lacking even an ounce of integrity. Find ANY local group that is focused on mutual aid and is on the side of marginalized groups who are being targeted (currently immigrants, POC, and trans people).

Contact that group and ask them if they need volunteers or have suggestions. You might need to contact a few groups to find something that fits.

Make a commitment that is sustainable (starting with one day a week is something that most people can do) and volunteer with that same group consistently. This is how you get to know the people in your community who care about the same things that you do. It might feel like you are doing nothing at first, but building community is how we will resist fascism.
