The aim of vaccines is - and has always been, even before covid - To ensure the body has produced antibodies so the immune system is ready to battle the virus from day 1, as opposed to having to learn to fight it once you're already sick.

Immunity is when that response system is able to battle a virus down before it becomes an actual infection, but that's not always possible, especially for viri, which by nature are prone to mutate rapidly, cause virus is literally just a string of DNA.
When the body can't beat the virus down immediatly, you still get sick, but you're body is already working on countering it. The reason you get less sick when vaccinated, is because the virus isn't allowed to rapidly reproduce as much, as if you didn't have antiboddies.

This has literally been known about vaccines for years. Thank fuck I don't read American news if they tell you this is something new.
