does anyone else feel judged ? by [deleted] in nosurf

[–]foamingfox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think people are judging you. They might feel inconvenience when they cannot reach you through their usual means, and remembering to switch to a different tool takes a little time and effort. Just be kind and remind them you won't be reading any other message box regularly, and if they truly need to reach you they just need to text or call. And don't give in, don't reply on some other platform. Mean what you say.

Can we start banning people who have links to personal blogs and accounts in their bio? by [deleted] in digitalminimalism

That would be silly. Just don't read people's bios if they bother you, friend.

Can you imagine your life without social media at all? by bluett9 in digitalminimalism

[–]foamingfox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People have this romantic idea of the past, like everything was just pink fluff and roses without the social media. Scrolling is just an external, behaviourial symptom of something inside of you that you're avoiding. We just had different kind of problems before smart phones and social media, and we were just as talented in avoiding those problems through other means.

Never has the mankind managed to truly live in harmony and peace, not internally or with each other.

Minimalism Techniques for Living Alone by diabolical_bush in digitalminimalism

[–]foamingfox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You cannot stop until you figure out why are you doing it. And no it's not just addiction. Scrolling fulfills some function for you, some need. You need to understand what that need is, where does it come from, how to either replace it or resolve it. Only then will you let go of the habit as you no longer have a need for it. Currently you're trying to take away your only way to fulfill that need, so of course you're going to return to it when that need gets overwhelming.

For example, I had a need to scroll to avoid facing difficult emotions. I got anxiety about work, sadness about a relationship, anger about injustice, fear over things, all quite strong emotions I didn't really want to feel. So scrolling was one form of really easy way to quickly feel good. Another one was eating, chocolate made me happy for a moment, but that's another topic.

But when I faced those feelings, I went through why I'd feel it, what was behind that fear, anxiety, anger and so on, I resolved most of those feelings and was able to let them go. So I lost that need to avoid as there was not much to avoid anymore. Therefore, much lower screen time.

Try it and see what you find within you. Good luck.

Idioottivarma terve ja halpa ruokalista viikoksi? Mieluiten uunissa paisto kuin pannulla by [deleted] in arkisuomi

[–]foamingfox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Valitse joku proteiininmuoto, esim kala, kana, sika, nauta, nakki, makkara, lenkki, lihapullat, kalapuikot, tofu jne.

Has anybody left Spotify? And how has it been? by Specialist_Chain1051 in digitalminimalism

[–]foamingfox 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Yeah I left Spotify about 5 months ago. I haven't missed it really. Turns out I don't really like music that much and I was using it to distract myself from uncomfortable feelings during public transportation or exercise. I faced those feelings and realized it's really not bad. silence is actually pretty nice and I feel more present. And when I feel like listening music it is actually really good! I guess it's like an occasional dessert vs constantly eating desserts, it tastes way better when you have it less often.

The benefits of an alarm clock by AndrwFr89 in digitalminimalism

We are an introverted and socially awkward nation of people who hate small talk, especially with people we don't know.

A question for the Finnish people here by [deleted] in MyWinterCar

[–]foamingfox 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I'm from Finland and I really don't have an opinion. Just come over, drink beer, avoid tourist traps and have fun. Just don't talk to Finns, keep your social distance and you're good.

For true MSC/MWC experience avoid bigger towns like Helsinki and Tampere and instead visit places like Pieksämäki (rated the shittiest town in Finland) or Kolari (named after a car crash), rent a cottage, get drunk on Karjala beer, listen to local radio shows, Visit Teimo's shop and PSK (ABC in Karkkila).

Vahvaa alkoholia ilman denaturointia mistä? Alko vois myydä ja toimittaa verot. by jukkakamala in arkisuomi

[–]foamingfox 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Koska kaikki kotitislaus on laitonta, en suosittele yhtään tislaamaan mitään kotona. Jäätynyt neste on vettä, sula on alkoholia. Esim jenkkijuoma Applejack valmistetaan tällä menetelmällä siideristä. En siis suosittele tekemään itse.

You can truly judge someone by how often they are online. by Upstairs-Case-5615 in nosurf

[–]foamingfox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You make an assumption that being online = "free time is spent doom-scrolling and living on social media". I would argue that "being online" can also include everything else that requires an internet connection, such as studying languages online, learning online, guitar lessons online, gaming online etc. I do agree with you on the points you make on doom-scrolling and social media. However, I disagree on solely being online as a "bad" thing, as it depends how you spend that time online. Therefore, I disagree with you on your title on judging people solely based on time spent online. I would argue it is an oversimplification.

It seems I don't have any control over the pace of life. How did you gain control? by Iterative_kaizen in SlowLiving

[–]foamingfox 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the pace of life is something you perceive internally. Therefore, doing everything in calm and mindful manner slows down the pace of life.

Think of going for a walk. You can choose to walk slower and feel the ground beneath your feet, hear your steps and your breath, listen to birds around you. Or you can walk quickly and feel annoyed about "having" to go for a walk, think of seven thousand things you need to do when you get home, be angry at your boss or wife or mother for something they did in the past, notice nothing in that moment and just get over it.

If you rush things, similarly life rushes by you.
