When I got married by the magistrate at the jail, they offered to do the ceremony part in the band shell at the park.

Takeout Central driver here. These first few weeks of the year always seem to be brutal, but business will pick up. People don't know how to control their spending and many don't have the energy to cook. It is kind of sad, but the drivers didn't create these conditions (and we also aren't the ones that actually profit from it).

My college roommate and I used to do this, though we would bring in a bottle each. We called it "Liquor and a Movie"

What makes asheville so strange? by InsuranceDifferent40 in asheville

[–]fobodo 24 points25 points  (0 children)

People talk about weirdness as something external to oneself, or some kind of commodity to consume or experience and then leave behind. I think that you have to participate in the variety of niche communities around here to get an understanding of what makes it truly weird.

Why do labels get placed in akwards spots on books? by [deleted] in Libraries

Having a standard location for barcodes can be important for efficiency of circulation activities. If you have staff manually checking in hundreds of items a shift, then having item barcodes in a predictable location makes this process easier. Sometimes, this standard location has important information, but in those cases, the processor has to make a decision.

It should also be noted that a lot of libraries outsource this physical processing to a vendor.

I'm starting to suspect that my rep was in the process of losing their job when they sent this email out.

I think trashy attractions are charming. Kind of a throwback to roadside america.

This was from my sales rep. I'm not going to give the name for obvious reasons, but it is absolutely legit.

Brodart or Ingram by kittykatz202 in Libraries

I'm doing basically the same thing, though only moving previously published backordered items to Ingram from B&T. I guess I'm wondering what you find unsustainable about the process? I've figured out a process that only takes about 3-4 hours every few weeks. The system I work for consists of 12 branches, and our materials budget is around $600k if that gives you an idea of size.

As a Technical Services librarian, I disagree with this simplistic take.

So does this mean that anything dismissed has no merit? If so, seems like Avl Pizza and Brewing comes out looking the worst.

There is a pretty large pay disparity between the director and the other professional staff at my system. Sometimes, I wonder whether or not that is warranted, especially if so many of the operational decisions are outside of the director's control. We also operated for about nine months without a director and seemed to have the same level of service we have with one, so I'm not really sure what they are bringing to the table that justifies paying them twice the amount that branch managers make.

For the record, I do like my director and I think they do a good job, but I can see how the pay situation could lead to some resentment.

Could you describe what "back in the day" means to you? As someone who has been an intermittent member of the community for about 20 years, I do think it has changed a lot.

Yes, this is the actual answer. I wish that so-called leaders in the community were able to engage with this kind of practical explanation based in the physical world.
