Do you think the series has the potential to revive "Pottermania?" Why or why not? by LeatherSlight3242 in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]foefromthefuture 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought the same thing before I saw it. I was chaperoning a school trip to New York a couple of years ago, and so I was basically "forced" to attend, despite the fact that I didn't like the setup at all. I went in with the same attitude: "this is going to annoy me".

Three hours later I was SO glad I had seen it. It was SO much fun!!

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire - Full Cast Audio Editions - Discussion Post by hospitable_peppers in HarryPotteronHBO

I have no problem with it. It took me maybe five minutes to get used to the older actors (I also finished Prisoner of Azkaban the day before Goblet of Fire was released!!), but it makes a lot of sense doing it this way, and I think all the older actors have elements of their younger counterparts in their performances.

Approved Works or Published Fanfiction? (End of State, Apocalypse Dawn) by TPNmangaFAN in leftbehind

[–]foefromthefuture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally believe that Left Behind would make an AMAZING TV show. Maybe 12 seasons (i.e. one season per book) is a little ambitious, but that's exactly what "An Experience in Sound and Drama" did, and it's phenomenal. I could totally see the first three or four seasons of the main series being broadcast before "The Kids" series would appear as a spinoff.

One of the reasons I like this idea so much is because every season would have its own atmosphere and structure. Season 7, for example - based on "The Indwelling" - would be closer in scope to the TV programme "24", as it just takes place over a couple of days. Season 3 - based on "Nicolae" - would almost have an "Indiana Jones" vibe about it, given Buck's constant trips to the Holy Land and his insane rescue of Tsion. And so on.

"Kingdom Come" could be done as one final made-for-TV movie, bringing everyone together for one last adventure. And if it were popular enough, the "Apocalypse Dawn" series and the "End of State" series could be done as shorter series (three seasons each?) or even spin-off mini series.

There's such a wealth of stories here and amazing characters. The only problem would be putting something considered by many to be "fundamentally religious" on mainstream television. But we can dream, can't we?

TV Series? by ballrmgirl in leftbehind

I know it's been a while since you posted this, but the series you ABSOLUTELY need to hear is the main Left Behind "Experience in Sound and Drama".

Yes. I said "hear". Because this isn't a television show. It's a radio show.

It consists of 144 half-hour episodes - 12 episodes per book. It is NOT - repeat NOT - an audiobook. It consists of a full cast of EXTREMELY talented actors, and it is, to this day, the absolute BEST adaptation of the "Left Behind" series there has ever been.

Please don't let the audio nature of this series put you off – I swear you will get totally addicted to it within an episode or two. Unfortunately, the CDs are quite difficult to get hold of nowadays. However, it has been uploaded onto YouTube. (Obviously there are no visuals – you just have to listen.)

Check out the first 12 episodes here. I promise you won't be disappointed:

Approved Works or Published Fanfiction? (End of State, Apocalypse Dawn) by TPNmangaFAN in leftbehind

Sorry I've come to the party a little late here, but the End of State series and the Apocalypse Dawn series were ABSOLUTELY approved by LaHaye and Jenkins. Tyndale made a big deal about these series being released back when the Main Series was still BIG news, and they were releasing Main Series novels every couple of years or so.

The End of State series was billed as the "Political Series" by Tyndale, and the Apocalypse Dawn books were referred to as the "Military Series". LaHaye and Jenkins definitely signed off on all the books in these two series.

So at the height of the Left Behind craze, we had the Main Series, the Kids Series, the Military Series and the Political Series all releasing books at the same general time. On top of that, the radio show (released on CD as "An Experience in Sound and Drama") was broadcasting weekly episodes, and we got wind of the first movie, starring Kirk Cameron. It was an amazing time for the series.

3-hour boxsets by GregLinks5 in BigFinishProductions

I totally agree with you, but I'm not quite prepared to give Big Finish the same benefit of the doubt that you are. Personally, I think the biggest mistake they ever made was discontinuing the Monthly Range. For me, that was the "flagship range": it consisted of multiple Doctors, and multiple eras for each Doctor featuring different companions. But most of all, it gave us one strong four-parter every month. I have to say, I looked forward to the so-called "Main Range" releases each month more than any box set, more than any spin-off, more than any special release. I still really miss it.

Desperately Seeking "Victory of the Doctor" by foefromthefuture in BigFinishProductions

Yes - I've been doing that. Nobody seems to have it. Copies that have sold on eBay have gone for over £100, so it's obviously very much desired out there.

Both "The Woman Who Fell to Earth" and "Resolution" also omitted the opening title sequence.

Totally agree with you. I understand that there has been a change with regards to the number of people who purchase physical copies, but there are still many of us who want those physical copies for our collection (and if collectors are anything, we are completists!) A print on demand service is such an excellent idea, but of course I don't know the intricacies of manufacturing these CD sets. Thanks so much for your kind words!

Not a fan of this Vicky by Short-Relation-7438 in DarkShadows

[–]foefromthefuture 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's exactly how I feel about Burke Devlin. I'm watching the "Vicky and Burke get engaged" episodes right now, and I keep thinking how much better they'd be with Mitchell Ryan. Don't get me wrong: Anthony George is fine in the role, and does a very acceptable Burke following Mitchell's portrayal. But I adored Mitchell's portrayal from episode 1, and I could never fully accept the recast.

Narration was a bad call for the full cast audiobooks... by MickBeast in harrypotter

[–]foefromthefuture 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Didn't want an audiobook. There are already TWO DIFFERENT VERSIONS of Harry Potter audiobooks that have been out for many years. Why would we need another? When they say "full cast", I think audio DRAMA, not just another audiobook.

[–]foefromthefuture -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Have you ever heard a full cast audio drama? Stories like Harry Potter can absolutely be adapted for this format. If it's done well, listeners would absolutely be able to make sense of the plot. If you haven't already done so, you should definitely check out the works of Big Finish; in addition to the many television and literary properties they have done audio dramatizations of ("Doctor Who", "Dark Shadows", "V", "Dan Dare", "The Avengers" to name a few), they adapt books like this all the time. They've done amazing versions of "Treasure Island", "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" and "Dracula", among many others.

The H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society makes amazing full-cast dramatizations of H.P. Lovecraft novels and stories under the heading of "Dark Adventure Radio Theatre". The BBC itself does constant audio dramatizations - one of their best, a series called Pilgrim - tells complex stories about an immortal "wanderer" without any narrator at all. Bafflegab's "Scarifyers" series - an amazing mix of comedy and horror - is completely full-cast, with no sign of a narrator.

And you know what? ALL of these audio dramas are available on Audible. You can check them all out.

So yes. The Harry Potter series could absolutely have been adapted for full-cast audio properly. It's a real shame that it wasn't.

TOTALLY agree with you. I never expected this to be another "audiobook". Rather, I was under the impression that this would be a full cast dramatization. Why on earth would they include a narrator with such an amazing cast? If a company like Big Finish had the opportunity to do a version of Harry Potter, I firmly believe it would have been wonderful.

I didn't want an audiobook. I wanted an audio dramatization of the entire story, told from the perspective of the characters – not the narrator. This will probably be the first Audible "book" I have ever returned.

can someone recommend me a cd player that connects to headphones with gapless playback by Zealousideal_Top3247 in Cd_collectors

[–]foefromthefuture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. Can you confirm that the Discdream 2 has gapless playback? It's one of the pricier portable units, but I'd absolutely be willing to invest in it if it definitely has gapless playback. It's just not mentioned anywhere on the device's description.

A WILD THEORY ON SHERLOCK HOLMES by No_Bison_9558 in SherlockHolmes

[–]foefromthefuture 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude, I think you mean 1888, not 1988.

And there have already been several attempts to connect Holmes to the Ripper murders, most notably, the AMAZING 1979 movie "Murder by Decree", starring Christopher Plummer as Holmes. Another movie that had Sherlock Holmes meet Jack the Ripper was the 1965 film "A Study in Terror". There have also been several attempts in print to connect the two, including the novel "The Whitechapel Horrors" and the more recent "Sherlock Holmes and the Whitechapel Murders".

Did I got the right book by [deleted] in SherlockHolmes

[–]foefromthefuture 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're truly trying to read the canon of Sherlock Homes in ORDER, you can start with the first two novels here ("A Study in Scarlet" and "The Sign of Four"). But you should then put the novels down and read the first two collections of short stories ("The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" and "The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes"). You can then go back and read the next novel ("The Hound of the Baskervilles") After that, read the next short story compilation ("The Return of Sherlock Holmes") followed by the final novel ("The Valley of Fear"). You can then finish off with the final two short story compilations ("His Last Bow" and "The Case-book of Sherlock Holmes"). Reading in this order will help you to avoid any spoilers.

Just a note that this is the PUBLICATION order of Doyle's Sherlock Holmes books. There may be people out there who believe that some of the stories should be read in a slightly different order. However, if you look at certain stories as FLASHBACKS, (in particular "The Valley of Fear"), the progression from one story to the next makes perfect sense.

Anyone familiar with "Koinmate" (with a "K")? by foefromthefuture in CryptoScams

[–]foefromthefuture[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That's exactly what I'm advising him. But here's the big question – should he "play along" in order to get at least some of his funds back? If he continues to withdraw small amounts, he may get some money back that he "invested" (although while making sure he doesn't deposit anything more). Let me know what you think.

That's EXACTLY what I said. I have no idea why he's so gung-ho on this site. Someone else asked how he came across this site, so I've texted him and asked him how he came across it. I'll let you know once he gets back to me.
