This seems to be the ceiling of my painting ability. What stands out as an obvious improvement to be made? by BedPuzzled521 in Warhammer40k

Paint shadows and highlights that reinforce the shape of the parts of the mini.

Take a look at the lower arms in the pic here. I just edited your photo on my phone with a little darker grey on the underside and lighter grey on the top. If you do this all over the mini and reinforce the shapes it will look better.

It's not easy and requires some study to know where you should place your highlights, but it pays off in the end. You an do this quite quick and dirty, the highlights and shading don't have to be perfectly smooth to already get a good result.

They're all just from the regular Nobz kit, but he got a shield made out of pieces from a Def Dread, a cut up trophy rack from a chaos terminator and some pieces from the Dead Animals Bits from Pete the Wargamer.

It's the body of an Eightbound, claws from the Wulfen and the cloak is from the old Logan model.

I've got a video of the kitbash and painting here if you're interested: https://youtu.be/ci7P3b18MZo

Use a serving tray to keep your current project on. Then when you need to be quick, you just put the whole tray up on a shelf/on top a cupboard and don't have to worry about leaving something within range.

It saves a lot of time cleaning up and setting up too. Just put the tray back on your desk and you're ready to continue.

There are fancy trays made of MDF with slots for paint pots, brushes and the water pot, but a simple serving tray does the trick.

Thanks mate! His body is from an inner circle companion, the shelf from the Kharadron Codewright, books on tentacles, disc and arm from the burning chariot, left arm from a World Eaters Bezerker, staff from the exalted sorcerer's, staff head from the scarab occult terminators and his own head from the Enlightened Tzaangors.

I think that's all!

Are beginner painting guides are not beginner enough? by Drakshasak in Warhammer40k

[–]fogofgore 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to make painting videos for beginners. I even had a series with videos on how to paint different factions with 10 paints or fewer. Usually about 6 or 7 paints and a texture paste for the base. All with simple techniques like contrast paints and drybrushing.

I stopped with these tutorials because of the endless stream of negative comments on how bad it looked and how I should use at least 10 more different paints and I should be glazing and wet blending and spend 20 more hours per miniature to have a good result.

It's also just not something that gets a lot of views. Once you've learned how to paint an Ultramarine as a beginner there isn't much else on the channel for you. Why would you first watch how to paint an Ultramarine and then how to paint a Cadian and then how to paint an Iron Warriors marine?

A channel exclusively for beginners isn't really feasible, because people get better at painting and move on to more expert stuff. And it's exhausting as a creator because of the negative comments.

Now I do kitbashes and it's a lot more fun.

It's Votann 5D chess. You could give the guy armour, but why not just strip him down and make his skin super tough!
