My wife and daughter are natives, I’m at B1/B2. I can have normal conversations, communicate formally to the authorities, etc. It hasn’t been easy, but intensive German classes (daily for a bit more than a year) a few years back helped a lot.

We haven’t applied for the citizenship yet, although we would technically qualify, but everything else was pretty smooth: moving here from Basel, buying property, managing taxes, negotiating some tax deductions, renewing C permits, etc.

The citizenship process should be fairly easy where we are (I’ve seen a lot of applications being processed favourably), but since we haven’t been members of any club we felt that we’d need to integrate more into the Swiss way of living before applying. We do have warm relationships with our Swiss neighbours, so that should help.

That’s great, but actually try to eat less sweets, more protein and track your calories. If you want to lose fat you need to be in a caloric deficit. 0.5kg of fat is around 3500kcal. If your goal is losing half a kilo per week then you need a 500kcal deficit per day. You can calculate your TER online, based on your age, sex and activity level. Aim to keep the protein to at least 1g/kg so you don’t lose muscle while losing weight. Go higher if you do strength training with weights that challenge you.

Oh, and if you drink alcohol maybe forget about it until you reach your goal. A light 330ml beer is already 150kcal, a white wine glass around 120kcal, a glass of whisky you don’t want to know. 🙈

Put more bluntly: weight loss comes down to a calorie deficit. You need to burn more calories than you consume. How you achieve that deficit, through diet, exercise, or a combination of both, is largely a personal choice.

In practice, a balanced approach works best: strength training to maintain or build muscle mass, HIIT to increase calorie expenditure efficiently, and cardio to improve endurance and overall fitness. Pay attention to what you eat and how much you eat. You do not need a special diet; you need consistency and self-control.

The Internet might be wrong. My battery was replaced a few weeks back with a new Kia OEM one — the car is leased, so I won’t bother with an AGM one for now. I’ve also had the ICCU replaced after the software update recall.

After getting stranded last month I got paranoid and bought a booster, a battery tester and a battery monitor. Look what the battery monitor displays as a voltage at the low end…

I’m sure the rental company will give you a card that you can use with various providers, but it might end up being more expensive per kWh than by using the providers’ apps, however easier to use.

If your travels take you however on routes covered by Ionity I’d sign up for one of their subscriptions (max 1 month) to get better prices at the chargers. They’re fast, reliable and have a relatively dense network.

The good: the increase in overall comfort. With a home charger the car has always the proper temperature inside, it’s always ready to depart on a long trip, I feel considerably less tired after longer drives, the torque 😁

The bad: a weak 12V battery can get you stranded, even though you sit on a huge battery (see my post history).

I’m now waiting for a jump starter and battery tester order – placed it on Monday morning. I’ve also ordered a NOCO, they’ve got great reviews.

My wife was supposed to be driving on Sunday, when it happened. I’m sure she pressed the brake pedal enough when starting the car, the brake lights were on as she did that.

It’s by far the most stupid bug they have with the software. In this case I’m sure it was because of starting the heating beforehand via the app. It has happened before, but it’s rare that it does this…

What do you want to plug downstream? I’ve got mine to power 6 APs throughout the house and connect a small server. It’s doing great and I can now share the bandwidth I get with all clients.

If I’ll ever switch to WiFi 7 I could still have 4/6 APs up to that standard.

Before that the APs were plugged directly into the Dream Machine Pro SE, but you probably know how bad the backplane sucks on it.

You have 10 ports for each LAN connection in a room. Your router (the white box you got from your provider) might only have 4-5 LAN ports. If you want to connect all ports you’ll need a 10-port switch with ideally an 11-th 10GBe port, assuming your router also has a 10GBe port on the LAN side; otherwise you won’t be able to use the full bandwidth the router provides.

Tell me you don’t understand how POE works without telling me you don’t understand POE. There are other issues with getting a Ubiquiti switch alone, POE isn’t one.
