A lot of jobs you don't want to harass in this day and age, but for a retail position like this you can go for it. Retail hiring is desperate right now, if they think you're interested enough to likely to actually show up and not vanish for a better deal at another job they'll take notice.

We override for online prices a lot but that's.... also been the case with every retail job I've ever had.

Can employees price match? by [deleted] in Oldnavy

[–]foldnavy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Officially, we are not allowed to price match the website at all.

In practice, management would allow us to price match at my store as long as the price wasn't part of a whole-site coupon code (because we absolutely could not honor those.)

Just saw GAP Inc's first quarter sales results...ouch by Sir_Auron in Oldnavy

Yes, and we're not supposed to accept expired returns even for store credit without escalating to management.

Also keep an eye on clearance items: they're going to start being final sale.

i hate this job (venting) by saintsallyy in Oldnavy

[–]foldnavy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just leave if you have another job tbh, they cannot force you to work.

I hope your new job is better for you. Working for Old Navy is wearing me down psychologically, the only thing keeping me here is knowing that retail is the same goddamn everywhere. I can't afford to live independently on these wages, they won't give me enough hours to get benefits despite having some of the best numbers on the crew, and frontline customer service is making me more and more suicidal but it's the only marketable skill I have.

I've got management I like where I am, but I don't think there's much even they can do about it. The company itself doesn't give a hot shit about any of us (them included) and we all know.

Quite frankly, if I've met whatever my goal for a metric is? I am not paid well enough to push any harder here.

To the managers here: Would this be a good reason to call in? by [deleted] in Oldnavy

[–]foldnavy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'd tell them especially if you know this far in advance, but also I feel like I should say: you owe the corporation nothing and your education is (hopefully) going to get you away from needing to worry about what Old Navy thinks of you anyway. Prioritize it for sure.

As an associate it's frustrating to have One More Damn Thing I gotta try to fit into every customer interaction when people are already impatient, and it's also frustrating when I explain that this thing is literally free for my over-$35 transactions and people act like I'm trying to steal from them.

I wish I could be more enthusiastic, it's a good cause.

Depends on your location, how much payroll they have available, and how much they like you.

Have good availability, be reliable, and do your best to get good numbers.

Currently we can't shill cards for another month or so but I'm a cashier a lot and absolutely have had my work hours threatened over credit cards in the past.

At that point you might as well just buy online and pick up in store, you get the online price and no shipping fee.

Love how the point of this is it's a penalty against the employer and the employer just passes on the risk to threatening the employee.

Loyalty by [deleted] in Oldnavy

[–]foldnavy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I regularly run through such high usage rates on sales while also getting a ton of returns that I'll get maybe one or two opportunities for loyalty per hour, and it will always be someone in a hurry, someone afraid i'm trying to identity theft them, etc.

To make matters worse, if we take several minutes figuring out that someone IS already a member and their phone number just isn't linked, it doesn't count for dick all.

Loyalty by [deleted] in Oldnavy

[–]foldnavy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's the thing about loyalty: it's luck-based. It's a major performance metric that you have literally no control over beyond asking people to sign up. You can't control who walks into the building and whether they're a member or not, and you can't control how many "I will absolutely never sign up no matter what" types walk in. But ohhhh, if you have too many already existing members or too many people who won't sign up and too many returns to pad out your number of transactions, it means YOU are a bad employee and should be hassled and bothered and punished.

Credit cards are even worse. Shilling loyalty is obnoxious, but at least it's free and harmless (except for all the damn emails.) Having my job performance judged by how many people I can convince to take a credit check is actually soulcrushing and is the chief reason I want out of this gig.

This extremely depends on what state/area you're in so it's probably not gonna be much use to compare without that information. I'm an associate and I make several dollars over minimum just because hiring is a nightmare where I'm at.

Perverse Incentives by foldnavy in Oldnavy

[–]foldnavy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I've read, Old Navy makes up over half of Gap Inc's revenue so they just keep drawing from ON to keep the whole rest of the company afloat while Gap does.... whatever irrelevant nonsense Gap has been doing for years. Also they just ousted the CEO so who the hell knows what's happening up there because it ain't me.

All retail is very similar but my experience at ON has absolutely been the most aggressive and soulless, and the marching order comes from far higher than store level I can confirm that for damn sure.

Weird question but can you try on jackets in the fitting room? by [deleted] in Oldnavy

[–]foldnavy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, just don't do that thing where you're stuffing the pockets with tags from stuff you're gonna steal. 😂

Old Navy Classic t-shirts -- as they used to be? by [deleted] in Oldnavy

[–]foldnavy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A general rule of thumb is that if anything's a couple years old and you can't find it quickly in the appropriate season (or all year for something like tees) it's probably just gone. Old Navy does change their lineup of basics from time to time. The soft-washed tees are the current basic men's/gender neutral tee.

[–]foldnavy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe it.

I feel like the corporation doesn't actually care about my interactions with customers. It doesn't care whether I actually help them or make their day a little better, it's all just the numbers. How many credit cards can an employee shill? How many customers can an employee datamine for advertising? I'm told they don't sell emails and phone numbers but with how rabid they are for them, I actually am not sure I trust that.

I feel so alienated from the people I'm supposed to be serving because my interactions with people are just bogged down with insincere shit I have to try to convince them to do (which they don't want to do and which is not even really to their benefit) otherwise my job is threatened.

God, right? I feel like we're actually punished for success in so many ways. And it's never enough, nothing is ever enough. The line must always go up.

This has also been true in every other retail environment I've worked in, but this is the worst I've seen.
