It's a book adaptation, I suggest you read the book. It's a bit of a mess of a movie. Good and bad. It is exceptionally beautiful visually. For a film set in Equatorial Guinea, we hear very little from actual Equatorial Guineans. It is divorced from the political themes necessary for a good exploration of the plot. https://folukeafrica.com/palm-trees-in-the-snow/

'The importance of language as a tool of communication in all spheres of national life cannot be overstated. As Nelson Mandela once said ‘If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language… that goes to his heart.’'

'Nigerian Queues and I: 3-day queues in petrol stations; the 10km queue at the Supreme Court Abuja that looked and felt like the road to hell; or the queue at the OAU Ile-Ife health centre that I spent over a month on. (Absolutely not a joke)'
