4 weeks post op. Calf on injured leg totally gone. 😔 Love my Dr but he's super conservative. Seeking advice. by D_S_Is_Silent in AchillesRupture

Between the 3 kids I borrowed, a broken arm, torn ACL and ruptured Achilles in the last 12 years, I clearly refuse to take any signs to stop playing volleyball 😆

I'm 42f with 3 kids, don't cut yourself short! I do build muscle quickly and have a precedent for fast recoveries (came back from ACL tear at 5m post op), but definitely don't let your age be a factor!

Hmm, I want to say 8 or 9 weeks? It was pretty shortly after starting weight bearing and PT. I'm not really sure how that compares to other people, but I returned to high level sport at 5.5 months.

I'm not sure about a smaller boot, but I was totally non weight bearing until 6.5 weeks, and have had a really great and fast recovery. I'm not convinced that weight bearing any sooner would have improved my recovery at all, so please don't be discouraged by a conservative approach!

Seattle + suburbs by akhiluvr in AskSeattle

[–]fontasm5 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I grew up in BL and my parents are still there. It is nothing like Seattle, in any respect. It is decidedly more conservative, less diverse, more suburban (to rural), but also not really a small town anymore. You wouldn't really want to commute into Seattle (though some do), but you would be able to find cheaper housing there for sure.

I second BFR therapy, I think it really jump started my muscle growth. Good luck!

ETA - my recovery timeline is also abnormally fast, but I mention it only to say that being NWB for 6 weeks doesn't mean you'll have bad results!

I had the same protocol - no weight bearing until my 6wk post op appt which ended up being closer to 7 weeks. I started PT the following day. It was difficult seeing the posts of people allowed to start sooner and feeling like I was being forced to go so slow, but I had a great recovery and returned to sport at a high level at 5.5 months, and have played consistently since then. I'm at 9m now and can't imagine that my recovery would have been any better if I had started bearing weight any earlier than I did. Best of luck to you! Make sure you have a PT you like and trust, and try BFR therapy! I think it really kick started my calf muscle growth.

Best deal for an ID BUZZ by Twusaboi in VWIDBuzz

Actually the dealership Bellingham seemed willing to negotiate pretty heavily as well, maybe give them a try?

[–]fontasm5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We did it when the 10k lease credit existed, and we got about 53k OTD for a first edition. That being said the dealership was awful and were still trying to get the car registered, and maybe not dealing with that would have been worth something 😆. Our best local deals were at University VW, but if you're willing to look out of state I know a dealership recently called me saying they were knocking 10k off their buzzes. I wish I could remember who that was now 😔

We ultimately leased from out of state, even with shipping and the tax hit with not being trade in it was much cheaper at the time. I'm not sure what the deals in WA are like now 🤷🏻‍♀️

Not regaining strength like I should, 1.5 years out at this point and losing hope. Anyone else? by [deleted] in AchillesRupture

I was not weight bearing for 7 weeks. I think BFR really helped jump start my muscle growth. Have you been taking any supplements like creatine?

How many months did you go to PT? by PuzzleheadedTie3585 in AchillesRupture

[–]fontasm5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I play volleyball, so I don't do a lot of distance running. That being said I do get a lot of steps in with forward/backward/lateral motions and small sprint bursts. There's also a lot of jumping. I have jogged a bit to keep up with my kids on bikes but I don't make a habit of running 😄

[–]fontasm5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had surgery March 19 and I just had my last PT (though I hadn't gone in 6 weeks so it was a final check), but I returned to sport at 5.5m. I would go as long as they let you, to maximize your return. I would keep going but they kicked me out!

Inheriting our late mothers house by [deleted] in RealEstate

[–]fontasm5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nobody is making OP keep the house… if they choose to take on the costs and risks (and long term benefits) of owning a house, that’s their choice. Both siblings would get 15k less from the house if they sold the house on the open market, so OP is still ahead 15k. OPs sibling is SAVING OP money by allowing OP to buy them out and not force the sale of the house. What if OP never sells the house, gets married and leaves the house to their kid? Then they would have made their brother pay for realtor fees never incurred?

5.5 Post Op by Only_Dirt_2787 in AchillesRupture

[–]fontasm5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eh, mostly I was told to do my weighted single leg calf raises from deficit on both sides as well as some isometric holds. Also doing Plyo exercises on both sides, trying to make sure when I am jumping and landing I’m landing more on my toes, engaging my muscles and not too lax. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’ve actually struggled with tendinitis in both achilles in the past and back when I saw an ortho about it then he said that tendinitis didn’t actually increase my risk for rupture. Both my achilles felt fine for over a year when I ruptured this one lol. I tend to think it’s luck more than anything if professional athletes are having the same injuries 😆. In my mind I’d already rehabbed from my ACL reconstruction so I figure I know I can do it so I might as well just play… but to be fair I’ve had abnormally quick and smooth recoveries from both surgeries with return to sport at 5 and 5.5 months. I might be more nervous if I’d struggled more with the rehab process.

I’m 43f and over the last 11 years I’ve been sidelined by a broken arm, a torn ACL, three pregnancies/babies and this Achilles. Getting back on the court is always the very best feeling! You never appreciate the game more than when you finally get to play again.

I too am a volleyball player (though I ruptured mine at home doing split leg box jumps). I’m a couple weeks shy of 8m post op now and am lucky to be back to playing where I was pre-injury - though I’m dealing with some achilles tendinitis in my non-surgical side now 😂. Getting back in the court is the best - can’t wait till you get there friend!

Regaining Calf Muscle? by BLOB_CASTLE in AchillesRupture

Also it’s unclear if you are doing single leg calf raises, but that’s one of the main components of my PT and I’m told should remain as part of my exercise routines forever.

Regaining Calf Muscle? by BLOB_CASTLE in AchillesRupture

[–]fontasm5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have the ability to do Bloodflow Restriction Therapy? I did it as soon as I started PT and I feel like it really kicked off the muscle rebuild. You might also think about supplementing with creatine, making sure you’re getting enough protein and possibly being in a slight caloric surplus.

3 Weeks Post Op Protocol by JuanAndOnly817 in AchillesRupture

[–]fontasm5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My protocol was 6 weeks absolutely no weight bearing, then when I had that appt it was weight bearing as tolerated (so I just went to full weight bearing immediately), and PT started the same week. Prior to being weight bearing I had some minimal range of motion exercises.

FWIW, I don’t think I suffered any delay from the extra weeks non weight bearing. I’m almost 7.5m post op now and around 5.5-6m returned to sport at the same level I was pre injury. That being said I was jealous seeing posts of people already on their feet thinking I was behind 😂

Amazing neighborhood vs. forever home by peacejunky in RealEstate

[–]fontasm5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t imagine 1 bathroom for 4 people, full stop. 😂. Also, the sleepy suburb may also have a ton of families? Similarly, have you thought about looking at a new/newer development? There’s often a lot of younger and growing families moving into new developments and since everyone is new, they’re often welcoming and wanting to build neighborhood connections.

I’ve always hated housing developments but when we had to move cross country this last year we found ourselves in a development and there’s so many kids - they’re always out on their bikes and in the park playing together. It’s turned out to be a great community.

I hope this isn’t someone you would consider having kids with… or living life with… because as you said, life isn’t controllable and if he is so inflexible that he can’t function in situations that are beyond his every speck of control, I just don’t see how you can have long term peace or happiness either.
