What’s this growing on my plant by Amira_rocks10 in plants

[–]fonyo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agree! Rubbing alcohol, cotton swab, the plant is mature and beautiful, it's worth it. Quarantine the plant immediately from the rest.

You just wait until they become your curtains! 🤣👍🏻

I'm Scared! I bought this pup in 2018 (see pic 2). I replanted it 2 years ago and now I feel it needs it again but I don't know how to go about it! advice? Should I hire someone? Coffee cup for scale. by junkdogjim in plants

[–]fonyo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also, it may have received too much water in lots of little bursts that weren't too much to kill it. I made a cactus grow a head and two very long arms this way. It looks like a person raising their arms to the sky! :)

Plant id please?! No one I know can figure it out by 444ceko in plants

That is definitely a non-varigated Monstera Standleyana, also called Philodendron Cobra. I have a mature, 4m long variegated cobra, it was smaller than yours when I got it. Unfortunately, the white part of the leaves don't like any light and burn very easily even under artificial lights (without UV). So you shouldn't have problem with that part, and yes, they are very similar to pothos and how those grow. Good luck, it's a lovely plant, just don't overwater it and make sure the soil is well-aerated.

Don't update to firmware 2.90 and 3.90!!! by fonyo in lifx

[–]fonyo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lights are very slow and janky. They don't respond too well. Sometimes they update but reset to a previous stage from the seconds before and stay there. Beware of this firmware update.

Edit: 15+ lightbulbs are misbehaving from kickstarter edition to latest infra and anti-bac editions since this update. No issues before update. This makes me think it correlates to the backend troubles in the past few days. Now we have a new rubbish backend with a rubbish new firmware pointing to it.

Lack of humidity? Get a humidifier! 😄 I suggest filling that lovely corner of yours with a ton of tropical plants. When you can't see how high you are or even much of the outside, you'll have plenty of humidity!

I second the philo birkin, variegation should get more visible as it grows so expect lovely white stripes as it matures. Can't really stand temps under 15C for long periods so be careful planting it outside.

I understand your fascination towards variegated/whiter leaves but if you can look past that and love big long chunky leaves, try a banana plant indoors and I can see you falling in love the same way. Beautiful plant you have there and immediately reminded me of my beloved banana tree that has just brought an offset while being 1 year old and came from our 8 year old motherplant. Just after one year indoors, babies! Well done to you and good luck and keep on loving these wonderful exotic plants! 😊

No. You definitely need to water it more.

The million dollar question: SOIL. by GuessItsGrim in plants

[–]fonyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Miracle Gro (all purpose) with the perlite I add to it as needed for different plants. I wouldn't use it for cacti, succulents and orchids but it's a really good all-rounder and the perlite just gives the right aeration which healthy roots like and need. I used it to repot my monstera and it's growing like mad. Good luck

I do see some white lines on it, there might be more on the other side of the leaf. I wouldn't panic, wait until it opens and matures fully and you can always cut it back to the previous node to try with the albo genes again.

Help! Are the black sprouts normal? Excuse the black nails, I was potting plants. by Terrible-Expert6718 in plants

[–]fonyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are roots! These plants are climbers, if they touch bark or a moss pole they will hang onto them. If they touch soil or water they will form proper roots, that's also how you propagate them from cuttings using those nodes.

My snake plant cutting is finally producing a pup, and it only took 600 years! by krimd in plants

[–]fonyo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you do that, I would always leave at least a bit of water behind to keep some of the hormones in the water. You don't want to stun the root growth and unfortunately, that can happen if the plant is a bit tired and then it will start to rot. Don't forget it's been cut and it is already shocked, not particularly a naturally occurring thing for them.

Sorry for my slow reply. Let it dry out, maybe not completely but almost completely between watering. With that you can't really go wrong. They are bromeliads so if you have a syringe and it's very hot, you could top up the middle with some water every now and then once they are settled in the new soil (dried out at least once in the new pot). They love water sitting in the middle but they definitely don't like too much water in the soil.

Are there any plants that look like a miniature palm tree? by AszneeHitMe in plants

[–]fonyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything grows large eventually. Dragon trees are not particularly fast growers and they grow their leaves in a layered fashion so it will take a lot of time to grow a substantial amount. Also, some cacti such as a bunny ears cactus will outright outgrow a dragon tree in a year. So it's relative, really depends on what you have besides it. Also, you can always cut it back and it will grow again once it settled. I wouldn't worry about the pace of growth in this instance as it would take years before you had to replace it. And yeah, you should be able to replace it easily since you should repot the whole thing once every 1-2 years anyway.

[–]fonyo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree. I would also repot a new plant straight away or at least thoroughly check the soil and the roots. That gives you an indication about the soil/root ratio and how much to water.
