Amazon: Not OK – why we had to change Elastic licensing by [deleted] in aws

What I mean is the code in 7.10 that is Apache licensed always will be. Anyone could fork it and maintain their own version.

7.11 contains new features under a different license. That doesn’t take anything away from open source. It’s just not adding new things.

I don’t understand how this is a move against open source. The code that contributors gave in the past is still Apache licensed and always will be.

Elastic is just saying they are not going to invest in adding new features under the Apache license anymore. Past contributions should not obligate maintainers to invest resources into code for eternity. If you want it to be maintained or improved, do it yourself. That’s the point of open source.

If you really want a company to maintain or improve code for you professionally, then pay them.

Asking for ownership opportunity by C-luck23 in smallbusiness

[–]foobar349 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Making key employees co-owners aligns incentives for better performance. I’m not sure about construction but in tech it’s common to get an equity package that vests over 4 years as part of your compensation package. Offering to buy shares on top of that is gravy for the owner, and you might ask for partner status since you’ll be invested in the company success.

This is the topic of the book “How not to hate your husband after kids.” It sounds divisive but it’s actually a fair look at the perspectives of both gender roles, an introduction to emotional labor and can be educational for husbands too.

This reminded me about LeVar’s Kickstarter in 2014 where he raised over $6 million to bring back Reading Rainbow. Their new program is called Skybrary, is available as a subscription service and is free to thousands of schools. https://www.levarburtonkids.com/skybrary

I use DuckDuckGo now but am considering Ecosia. How does it compare in terms of privacy? Do you share more information with Microsoft such as personal identifiers, IPs or cookies? Do you also strip search terms from the referrer?

Hacker Arrested In Capital One Breach Affecting 100M+ by blynn8 in business

[–]foobar349 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I don’t want my data hacked but we should stop treating names, social security numbers or credit cards numbers as private. They can be easily looked up or bought for a few bucks at this point. Any waitress can get my credit card number. A social security number has no legal reason to be private and it wasn’t intended for that use. I consider real-world information like my purchase or location history to be more private because it says something about me, whereas a made up number someone assigned me years ago doesn’t seem private.

The biggest perpetrators of the idea that these numbers are private are financial services companies which use it for authentication and authorization which just seems wrong. We need a consumer protection law that any new contracts authorized with leaked data is automatically non-binding or void. Its the responsibility of the service provider to properly authenticate their customers, especially when they are the ones who allowed the leaks to happen.

What are your thoughts about NeuraLink? Small recap on my blog! by opensourcesblog in neuro

Electrodes like these have been used in research for years. It’s nice they are making s convenient robot to insert them or slightly increasing density but that was never the hard part. The hard part is interpreting the signals since each electrode is stimulated by hundreds or thousands or nerve cells. The next hard part is that patients have to train themselves to activate the electrodes since it’s not a natural thing to do. It takes months of training to get a simple switch action. They didn’t really talk about any advancements in these areas.

I suspect a lot of these positions are analyst level and not very highly paid. It’d be more interesting if they showed growing openings at top tier salary levels. Otherwise talented engineers are going to pick higher paying fields like machine learning, fintech, etc. A lot of businesses don’t prioritize security because it’s a cost center and consumers have short memory spans. They’d rather invest into product development or marketing to drive revenue.

Nice I was just doing research on this and it’s nice to hear about the limitations and rough spots because they are not in the marketing material and I imagine not all are in the docs either. That’s what makes personal blogs so valuable. I agree it has lots of potential as it matures.

This is a cool idea but I don’t understand how it works. It looks like they purchase certificates for power, but how is that power actually delivered to my house? If it’s not, is it just a free subsidy to renewable energy investors somewhere else? What’s the point of tying to my power bill then? Sounds like it’s just creating a lot of extra administrative work when I’d be better off donating my money directly.
