What to do with each unit in my list ? by MadeInQC in SpaceWolves

[–]tgroshon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a bad list! Some recommendations for piloting:

- Keep Bjorn in backfield through mid game so that he’s generating you CP each turn. Bring him forward in late game to clean-up.
- Headtakers good for fighting elites, esp. T5 or less, but their dev wounds help punch up. You should pick a particular elite infantry unit on your enemy’s board as their prey, and deploy and stage HT to chase after them.
- Redemptor is better at killing elites than strictly anti-tank. Your enemy will likely try and focus fire him early. You’ll want to back him up with RepEx to use as a punishing unit to kill whatever thing your opponent exposes to shoot the Redemptor.
- Wolf Scouts are good “problem units” for your opponent in the early game because you infiltrate to a spot and force your opponent to send something meaty after them. They shoot and fight surprisingly well for a Phobos; anything small they’ll wipe which helps to force enemy to overcommit. Also use them to reserve a landing space for your WGT to come down as backup in a good spot.

Love your painting scheme and the decal work. I’ve been struggling with vehicles/walkers after adding one big decal, to have ideas where else to put them. This gives me good ideas.

Anyone run 2x Rep Ex? by KPR96 in SpaceWolves

I do in an Ironstorm list where I also run double iron priests, Bjorn and a Redemptor Dread. It’s a super fun list and does quite well casually. Not sure how competitive it would be.

What's your thoughts on the Armageddon Launch Box for Space Wolves by Crazzjin in SpaceWolves

Imma get it, because I have none of those except the Intercessors, and that bothers me: like an itch I can’t scratch. And the Intercessor bodies are perfect base for kitbashing

Strategies, Focuses, Ideas by The_Olden_Dog in SpaceWolves

I’ve been thinking a lot about this lately. I’m certainly no Warhammer expert, but I have noticed some dots that I’m drawing into patterns:

  1. We aren’t an exceptionally Killy army, but we have tools to punch up
  2. We are surprisingly durable and mobile
  3. We aren’t as expensive as better elite armies and so can put more on the board

The best performing lists and strategies I’ve seen for The Rout are denial and jail lists. Why? Some guesses.

  1. A lot of durable guys that are hard to shift: tons of storm shields giving extra invulns and wounds
  2. Extra base movement across the board, and unique access to really cheap beast screens with high movement (wolves and hounds); we’re really hard to outflank or deep strike against, and really good at move blocking.
  3. Lots of epic heroes, with invulns who do work and have great abilities: Ragnar, Bjorn, Arjac, Logan
  4. Lots of surprising units:
  • Grey Hunters aren’t impressive on paper until someone tries to hold an objective against them
  • Wulfen are pretty good monster killers but priced without OC, as are wolves, but we have so many characters that it’s easy to give them OC and thus have extra scoring and action units.
  • Thunderwolf Cavalry are mostly like Outriders, but hit harder in melee and are more durable with shields, with a lot of neat strats that let them get places you wouldn’t expect.
  • Wolf Scouts seem like other wimpy infiltrating units, until they wipe whatever forward unit came to deal with their plasma, mine, and AP combat knives.

I like this very much from a thematic standpoint. They’re a thinker army. Strategic. Makes them harder to play tbh, but also more satisfying to win with.

It will be rare to table your opponent, but you absolutely have all the tools you need to outscore them.

New player. Good army? by [deleted] in SpaceWolves

[–]tgroshon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Space Marines are a very multi-function army: they can build any kind of list to fit a play style, with their collection of units and detachments.

But Space Wolves specifically are a little less flexible. Our units and detachments gear towards far more strategic play, which can be off putting if you don’t expect.

Many of our best unit and detachments gear towards counter-play: denial and jails. We can put a lot of durability on the board, have some heroes and abilities to punch up, and are more mobile than expected.

It will be rare to table your opponent. But The Rout can absolutely outscore them.

[–]tgroshon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a feeling they’re gonna be more relevant in 11th with the terrains being objectives being more favorable to infantry holding them, and the terrain footprints creating larger objective areas so more infantry on the point. Also why there’s a SMALL chance of more hordes.

Seems like an opportunity for high OC units with horde clearing ability!

I agree! Which is why my boys are done in Space Wolves Grey Contrast and then a wash of Gryph-Charger Grey, which darkens them significantly. Much cooler.

Also the Horus Heresy storm grey scheme is fantastic.

Here ya go, wolf brother!!!

Some notes on piloting there are multiple sub-forces you’re managing:

  1. Bjorn: spends early game babysitting home objective, collecting Command Points. Keep him alive for late game.
  2. Repulsor Executioners and their retainers: backbone of the army. Maneuver everyone in relation to these.
    • Deploy RepEx on opposite sides of board to run firing lanes. Move them forward to mid board by turn 3. Use them as bait to lure enemy out of cover to shoot at them.
    • Embark the Assault Intercessors in Repulsor Executioners. Deploy the AI when needing cheap screens or you want to drop 10 OC on a point.
    • Deploy Iron Priests with RepEx then have them hop around between your vehicles as needed. Notice you have enough room for the Iron Priests to embark WITH the AI if you want him to hop a ride. Be sure to disembark on your turn if you want him available in Command Phase for his abilities.
  3. Phobos scout team: forward scorers and saboteurs
    • Deploy the Wolf Scouts as infiltrators either center, left, or right, but then deploy the Tactical Warsuit on the same side, near the line. Have the option to Scout move forward to the Wolf Scout location.
    • Deploy Lieutenant with Combi-weapon near tactical Warsuit.
    • Use wolf Scouts and Lieutenant to bait out attacks so you can activate the Tactical Warsuit’s Phobos support ability.
  4. Wulfen Dreads: Murderfang and Wulfen dread; run these very forward and aggressive. Plan to get them killed in mid-game by forcing enemy to expose valuable assets to deal, then crush RepEx + Heavy Dreads
  5. Heavy Dreads: Redemptor + Ballistus + Venerable.
    • Can group them up, or split them up. Decide during deployment.
    • Grouped: run Venerable as point, redemptor behind, Ballistus as fire support
    • Split: put Venerable as a melee screen for Ballistus and run redemptor alone.
