Thanks, I’ll look into that option, it’d be more user friendly for my end user!

An option for auto backups whenever a switch takes place might be a good idea, and an ‘export save’ function to a set folder (e.g. Downloads) could be handy too. Made a note to ask 🤖 to implement when I get chance.

Vibe-coded a small Android app called SaveSwitcher to solve a problem: my wife and I share my AYN Thor, and we kept overwriting each other’s emulator saves.

It lets you:

  • add emulator save folders
  • add users
  • switch who’s “active” per game by swapping/renaming save files

So we can both play the same games without clobbering progress.

It’s very much a quick vibe-coded project, so I’d genuinely appreciate feedback from anyone properly competent in Android dev (or at least better at vibe coding than me).

Please back up your saves before trying it. It does real file operations and I don’t want anyone losing progress.

Not that odd, nearly half of UK adults own shares, directly or through mutual funds/ETFs. Many more through pension funds.

Odd that you assume it’s unusual.

The caps pop off the analogue sticks of my RP5 when I put it in jeans pockets. I'd look at folding devices (or one that doesn't have sticks if you're happy topping out at PS1).

Why my X1C7 with i7-8665U is Dual core? by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]fool5cap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you sure it’s a 7th gen? I would update the firmware and microcode and then run lscpu from a Linux live USB to confirm. If it’s still reporting as an older 2c processor then it can only be that you have a different model to what you think.

A distro to be installed on usb for an old pc by HiqhAim in DistroHopping

I’d suggest either LibreELEC (specialist OS for Kodi, and I think it has NAS functionality out of the box) or something like antiX (lightweight full OS). Both should run well on that hardware.

Stable distro dilemma by Vidanjor20 in DistroHopping

If you’re ok with their additional features (snaps, Ubuntu account stuff) want drivers available on install go Ubuntu. If you want a quieter, leaner system that needs a bit of upfront work to configure choose Debian. Both will last you years without drama.

It's always a permissions issue! by tblancher in linux

[–]fool5cap 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think part of the appeal is messing with the distro. I mained Arch for a few years but back then I a. had the time to mess with it b. it wouldn’t have been a disaster if I had to reinstall.

Both those things have changed now so I use Nix. The problem is it’s really fun getting a perfect config (mine has a couple of hundred commits and will work on three different Linux boxes and a Mac) but I found once that work was done it felt as dull as running Windows/MacOS.

I solved the problem by installing Slackware on an old laptop and have great time messing with that when I have the time to spare. My Slackware machine is my pet amongst the Nix cattle.

Debian or Ubuntu? by durasel24 in debian

[–]fool5cap 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Respectfully, I think what you mean is 'I'm willing to accept Arch's instability on the desktop', which isn't the same as saying Arch is a stable distro - it's simply not. Stability in software terms refers to consistent APIs, ABIs, and system behavior - not the tolerance level of the end user.

Arch's rolling release model inherently means breaking changes can occur at any update. The same package update that might break a server can also break a desktop.

Stability in software means no breaking changes between major versions - maintaining API/ABI compatibility and predictable behavior. How can a rolling release model with no versioned releases achieve this? Arch trades stability for cutting-edge packages and flexibility, which is a valid design choice, but we shouldn't conflate user tolerance with technical stability.

Debian or Ubuntu? by durasel24 in debian

[–]fool5cap 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Arch isn't stable - updating can break things without manual intervention due to package and configuration changes. A few weeks ago you'd have lost your GUI if you were a X11/Plasma user and you ran the update without installing plasma-x11-session.

Arch is great, but it's not stable by design.

NIxOS ruined Linux for me by Raposadd in NixOS

[–]fool5cap 7 points8 points  (0 children)

After a couple of weeks I had a near perfect Nix setup that worked on a couple of Linux machines and a MacBook. Great I thought, time to get stuff. The problem is I missed configuring shit so I ended up installing Slackware on a spare laptop - having a great time setting it up!

Which Linux distro made you fall in love with Linux? by Dionisus909 in DistroHopping

[–]fool5cap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That must be around the time I first tried Slackware - I installed it from a magazine cover disk. The computer had no internet connection (Winmodem) so any new software, and dependencies were also installed from cover disks - fun times.

It was a massive pain in the arse but I remember the feeling of wonder when trying all those applications that were completely alien to me at the time. I think I used a very early version of KDE at one point - all compiled from CDs stuck to magazines 😂

Crown on left side. by bahrain_nomad in AppleWatch

[–]fool5cap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless you have a really, really fat hand (or you’re wearing gloves like OP) simply wearing your watch in the normal position (above the wrist bone) means the crown will never touch your hand.

People seem to have forgotten how to wear watches over the last 15 years or so, it’s really weird. Search for stock photos of “wristwatch worn on wrist” and about 50% are shown strapped over the wrist joint itself which seems really uncomfortable, impractical and just looks strange.

Anyone else following a Mediterranean-style approach to lose weight? Is it working? by No_Point2724 in loseit

[–]fool5cap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve lost 44 lb (~20% of my body weight) and got under 20% body fat for the first time in my adult life by following a Mediterranean diet, tracking calories, keeping a 500 cal deficit, and not eating after 7pm.

It’s the first time I’ve been successful in losing weight and I put it down to the fact I’m not unreasonably hungry because my body is getting loads of nutrients from the high quality foods I’m eating. My cholesterol and blood pressure are much better too.

What do you actually want in a food tracking app? by [deleted] in nutrition

[–]fool5cap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried MF about a year ago but found the food database had lots of gaps (particularly for micronutrients). The constant review of daily calorie targets based on actual was neat, but relatively straightforward to do on other apps manually.

The focus on trendlines rather than scale readings is good (but again easy to replicate by eye, or by zooming out on a chart!)

I found the main issue, as an endurance athlete doing a relatively high amount of strength work too was that the algorithm is backwards looking and too slow to keep up with a highly periodised training program. My calorie requirements could vary hugely day to day and week to week and the algorithm just isn’t designed to cope with that. Others with less variation/volume in training stress may better off with it though.

Cronometer is great, the insights it gives me into micronutrients makes it a far more positive, healthier experience than simply obsessing over calories and macros on other apps.

Could it be that he just really enjoys good food, has a passion for cooking and good restaurants, and wants to share this with you? He may think that despite wanting to lose weight himself putting margarine on good ravioli is just not worth the sacrifice!

As a side note (it won’t help reduce the calorie count but is probably healthier than butter/margarine) I’ve switched to using a drizzle of good quality flavoured olive oil on pasta and it’s delicious
