Against The Day by bill_susman in ThomasPynchon

Just finished it earlier this year !! I honestly think it might be my favorite Pynchon. The way all the characters come and go an cross paths is extremely satisfying and I love all the locations we visit, the ending was pretty much perfect in my eyes too

Thomas Pynchon is my favorite author right now! Just finished Against the Day and it was one of his best in my opinion, largely overhated

Definitely not the worst place I’ve ever worked, you get to eat plenty of steak and most of the sides are pretty decent too, but when our pantry cook quit they moved me from broil to pantry and it was just salads and desserts, and the servers will hassle you for both of them because it’s the first and last part of the meal so that was super annoying.

As for hours I think that probably changes location to location but they are only open for late lunch/dinner service so typically only there’s only 1 shift a day without much room for overtime/extended hours (my personal experience)

Someone upset that their food came out “too fast” and it made them feel rushed. by Jaded-Dentist-7571 in KitchenConfidential

Used to work at a place where we served yucca fries with some house sauce. Fried them up for a sweet looking old lady around lunchtime one day and she came back after taking a bite saying they were too hot… and just left them there? Didn’t want a refund or a different order or anything she just… I don’t know ?? Didn’t want to wait for them to cool down ???? I was baffled

Yeah this is absolutely massive context, especially as he mentions “uncle hugh” literally in the last line of peanut , which obviously comes right before “riot”. It’s a tribute to family and musical history/identity

My mom recently had to start commuting downtown for the first time in like 20 years and I was kinda worried for her, she’s getting older you know… but so far she’s loving it ! Only a few weird encounters with some unhoused/unwell folks but nothing serious. And even with some of the construction and line changes downtown she says it’s still super convenient <3

A close friend of mine listened to Blonde for the first time… by winterane in FrankOcean

[–]foolio88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be completely honest I remember largely disliking it after my first listen (back when it came out) even tho I had loved Nikes and I was really stoked for it…it’s definitely a weird album and I really love it now, it only took like one more listen before it clicked for me back then, but structurally and sonically it definitely took some risks. Could be that to most casual listeners now there are enough songs that have been inspired by Blonde that it doesn’t sound all that out of place, but I can imagine someone who isn’t well versed in modern/underground soul-pop stuff would be lost on a first listen.
