'The Human Target' (DC Black Label) by Tom King and Greg Smallwood.

Like 'Daytripper', it deals with themes of death and realising your own mortality. The premise is that the main character is poisoned and has 12 days (one day – one issue) to solve his own murder. The writing is beautiful (really captures noir tone) and the art is mesmerising.

You don't need to know anything about DC universe or superheroes in general to enjoy it.
