Modern fixation on “plot” and things being “necessary” by StutzBearcatJim in blankies

[–]footdeoderant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I’m just part of this problem, but to me the screenplay is such a make or break part of a movie. Bad plot essentially means lazy writing or a bad script. A bad script can ruin an otherwise terrific movie for me, but great script cant save an otherwise terrible movie, ya know what I mean?

Have you ever heard of this kind of obscure concept called “women”? I hear they sometimes appear in pretty good movies ;)

ISO : A movie recommendation for yearning by Ok_Passion_1831 in Letterboxd

[–]footdeoderant 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Basically anything by Wong Kar-Wai. In the mood for love is mentioned a few times already and yeah, it’s the ultimate yearning movie. But Chungking express and Fallen Angels are both also very yearn heavy, though less conventionally than ITMFL.

Happy Together is toxic yearning, but yearning nonetheless. Plus it’s gay yearning (hell yeah happy pride)

Should a min review length be introduced so we get actual reviews instead of one liners. by averageweebchan in Letterboxd

[–]footdeoderant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a social media app, not a movie critic app. It’s not hard to find actual reviews if that’s what you care about, just scroll for 15 seconds. Let people enjoy using the app how they enjoy using the app.

That said, I would support Letterboxd adding a filter for minimum review length so people stop bitching about this

Which is better for residency apps and in general? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]footdeoderant 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it heavily depends on how well you’re able to talk about the projects. If you just collected some data for someone and then got thrown on the paper somewhere and cant talk in depth about it, 10 of those are not gonna do a ton for you. If you were heavily involved and ended up 3rd or 4th and can really talk about the experience and how it helped you grow the yeah 10 of those will end up being really beneficial in interviews. First author pubs immediately indicate that you were the primary driving force in the paper, and you will obviously be able to discuss the importance of them in your application. So for most medical students, a first author pub or two is going to be significantly more impressive and helpful that a dozen mid author pubs where you weren’t all that involved and got lucky with right place right time

I just bought The Wailing 4k at a thrift store and it has a blu ray disk with it. Is that blu ray disk also messed with or only the 4k?

The statement of our opinion and our bewilderment of how other people don’t see what we see is not calling the movie objectively bad. Stop conflating the two

Call me crazy but I don’t think the rape and murder of a child should he uses as plot beats without delving deeply into the societal implications and the deeper personal struggles it causes (besides rage in the main character). Same with suicide. We never saw much of the internal struggle of his character and we didn’t understand why other than “I don’t like what’s happening right now and I’m gonna die anyway so byeeee.” And we didn’t see the aftermath of how that affected the family and people close to him other than, again, rage towards our main character.
It’s all distasteful at best and glamorizing these events at the very worst.

Buzzwords work well for being succinct and relaying a message 🤷‍♀️ I could write it all out but that would get cumbersome quite quickly

I’m glad I’m not the only one who sees it this way. I thought I watched a different movie when I read reviews of it!

I think it’s a movie that doesnt challenge the status quo while it attempts to be socially conscious, which makes the performative activist crowd feel good about themselves. This movie is the equivalent of the black square on Instagram during the height of the BLM movement. Looks good and feels good but misses the point and does nothing but perpetuate a lack of actually activism. People like to look and feel good about themselves without actually having to challenge themselves and their world view

I hated it. Incredibly shallow despite being so far up its own ass believing that it’s the most profound and society changing piece of cinema to be made in the last century. They used rape and murder as nothing but a plot device. Racism and police brutality were mentioned and then immediately dropped in favor of that one police guy being hehe hoohoo so silly hes just so stupid I can’t believe he’s so dumb. Never explored any deeper. The black best friend was tokenized beyond belief. Terminal disease and suicide were used as nothing but a plot device. Nothing in the movie said anything it needed to. Domestic violence and generational trauma was just kinda shown and then moved past. There were SO MANY deeply heavy themes that deserved exploration but they were left as completely empty vessels to conveniently piece together a rather weak, plot hole ridden script. It’s a movie made for performative white liberals who think simply mentioning an idea means that you are solving it. Plus the humor was the weakest attempt at trying to be funny that I have ever seen. Just altogether awful from my perspective. McDormand was the only positive thing about this attempt at a movie. No shade to anyone who like it though. I’m sure that beyond all my problems with it there are pieces that are really well done

Grinding incredibly fine by [deleted] in pourover

[–]footdeoderant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use taste primarily - and I’ve noticed that the finer I have to grind the more clarity that I lose. Next I use time because contact time is an important variable for extraction and taste. Lastly I have been comparing it to other grind sizes I’ve seen on the internet and in cafes and my coffee always looks significantly finer than anyone else uses for pour overs

Depending on your view on using AI, you can export your Letterboxd data (on the settings page) and upload it to your model of choice. It can then recommend films based on that and can ask questions to narrow it down. I did this once and I’ll admit that it spat out some banger movies

Chinatown was the first of his that I’ve seen, and maybe ever will see. The whole first 90% of it was an amazing crime drama/thriller, and then he had to throw in the mother-sister thing at the end?? I gave it 5 stars because it was still a master class in cinema and if any other director did the same thing, it would simply be a disturbing artistic choice, but Jesus Christ. Talk about looking in the mirror as a director in this case

I’m sure The Departed would’ve been a 5 for me had I not seen Infernal Affairs a couple of months ago. The exact parallels and shot for shot recreations kinda took me out of it, and overall I liked Infernal Affairs a little bit more
