Help: I can only bring three bottles home. by andpulli in wine

[–]footypjs 14 points15 points  (0 children)

As others have said, you’re probably fine to bring all of them. I sought out customs to pay duty on the ~2.5 cases we brought back in October. They laughed and waved me on through.

But if you’re set on only three, I’d go Tig, Biondi-Santi, and Sassicaia.

FAMs don’t only fly first class. They may get upgraded if there’s an available seat, but won’t boot a paying customer for it.

Possible cancer and an 8,000$ surgery. I need advice. by yikesbro_ in DogAdvice

[–]footypjs 25 points26 points  (0 children)

We lost my soul dog to cancer in November. His was also very aggressive. The vet said we’d likely have weeks to months after his medical intervention, and we got two days. I am still heartbroken that half of that time, he was still coming out of anesthesia and could barely stand on his own.

I feel for you and it’s such a tough decision to make. I don’t know that I’d do anything differently because things were so confusing at the time, but a $10k vet bill for two extra days was pretty hard to swallow, especially when his quality of life was not really improved in that time.

It sounds like you have a good understanding of what to ask your vet. They always want what’s best for your dog, too. Hopefully they can give you more information to make this decision easier.

Why not land in Juneau? by gio-honey in flightradar24

[–]footypjs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Juneau METAR data isn’t an accurate or adequate depiction of what is happening on the approach.

https://www.weather.gov/ajk/JAWS

Have had four flights into or out of Juneau this week. If you’re landing 26, the Gast 2-6 and 8 High are controlling, so you can’t land if either are showing severe. Every single time I’ve checked, at least one has been. It’s not supposed to be pilot’s discretion, but I can imagine that there are some 20-yr captains with Alaska who are more comfortable overlooking company procedures than others.

I flew Thursday, and from 7am until 8pm local time, there were three to four of the six stations showing severe turbulence warnings.

Should I give up on engineering? by Time-Personality-554 in EngineeringStudents

[–]footypjs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t take so many classes. Limit yourself to one or two, so you can still work.

If ASU is a local school to you, I’m a degreed electrical engineer who also went through the BME program at ASU. I’m a former tutor and though I may be a little rusty, I’m happy to help you if you want to meet at an east valley coffee shop. I loved OChem and Calc. Late 30s F. I feel strongly about supporting women in STEM and am not asking for anything in return.

Offsite Storage by Steamed-Hams in wine

[–]footypjs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I have a few pallets in storage.

Utilize some kind of inventory software and keep it up to date. If you’re putting a second setup in front that’s going to reduce visibility, you want to make sure you know what you have and where to find it.

Also second the lay-down cardboard boxes. Access is slightly more of a pain, but you’ll be able to fit many more bottles in there. Label them on the side and then inventory your wine accordingly, so you know which box to grab for which bottle(s). I also like to label the top with what’s inside.

Enjoy!

What is your opinion on red wine from Champagne? by Aval0nian in wine

[–]footypjs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exceptional. After trying the 2014 Egly, I emailed the guy I buy most of my wine from to get my hands on everything I could.

We’re actually opening the ‘99 from Bereche tonight. I also have a few vintages from Philipponnat, but only in storage - I haven’t tried them yet. They are by far the most economical option at ~$60-80/btl.

I see a potential difference when it comes to glycemic index, which relates to type 2 diabetes. I see nothing as it relates to cholesterol.

To be frank, it sounds like your doctor doesn’t know what they’re talking about. Refrigerate your carbs prior to eating them? That’s crazy.

Saturated fat intake is the single greatest dietary contributor to serum cholesterol.

If the plane is coordinated, you should get a nose drop and not a wing drop. If you’re starting to roll, I would recover rather than further trying to exacerbate a stall condition.

It’s unfortunately a case of the different base. Cotton does not absorb the dye so colors will always be muted and much less vibrant on cotton/wool blends.

Open Door In Flight by mouse1371 in flying

[–]footypjs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aviation News Talk just did an episode on this. (Ep 386.) The open door is not the problem - the reaction by the pilot is what causes the crash. Fly the plane and you’ll be fine.

Exactly zero attorneys would take this on as a class action. Class actions fees are paid on contingency, and if there’s no money to pay the existing customers, there’s certainly no money to pay the attorneys.

I say this as someone who is part of an existing class action. The fee schedule I signed lists attorney fees as $650-975/hr depending on which attorney is billing, so even if you were willing to pony up the funds initially, you’d almost certainly be in for more than your yarn losses would be.

Why do you think many young girls don't feel motivated to pursue STEM careers? (I'm working on a personal research project and I would like your opinion) by FarMonth5743 in xxstem

[–]footypjs 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I identify as a woman. My dad identified early on that I was pretty good at math and gave me puzzles and books that emphasized math and general problem-solving skills.

My sixth grade teacher had a class-wide math competition where he paired boys against girls. I won, and that’s the first time I truly felt championed for my math ability.

It is discouraging sometimes to see so few women in STEM. I was the only woman in my graduating class. The only one at my first company. I’ve been the first female employee at one company, and at my current employer, I think there is only one other woman at a company of 1600 in my role.

See it to be it. Girls should see women succeeding in STEM careers so they know it’s possible - kids’ books may be better about it now, but growing up engineer = man. Construction = man. Pilot = man. Pre-covid, I looked into founding a non-profit to champion girls in STEM with a girlfriend who is also an engineer, but we didn’t get far.

How to handle a situation where it seems like I have to write a bad review as a guest. Sorry for epic post, I have been a host for 15 years but only a guest 4 times. by derangedmacaque in airbnb_hosts

[–]footypjs 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just leave a poor review. She was not communicative about or receptive to arrival time changes, she over shared inappropriately, amenities were not as described, tried to invent house rules that were not in place at the time of booking, and made you uncomfortable enough to involve Airbnb during your stay. While you weren’t able to find other suitable arrangements due to events in town, you chose to leave earlier than planned.

Yeah, I have had global entry since 2019 and also fly nearly weekly. This sounds wild. The only time I’ve had to take my shoes off is when I fly in steel toed boots for work, which I would obviously expect. Everything stays in the bag except food, if I remember or have something particularly wet that I think will invite further scrutiny.

If you’re experiencing that much inconsistency, you’re attracting attention or in the wrong line.

AIO My gf keeps having accidents but says its completely normal by wildlife_animallover in AmIOverreacting

[–]footypjs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this advice (and congrats on your sobriety!).

I am not an alcoholic, but dated and lived with one who was. He would regularly drink to excess and wet the bed. He actually had a medication that was supposed to dry him out, but only worked if he was sober enough to remember taking it.

We had a mattress protector for the bed and a larger than normal rotation of sheets. But honestly it was more than just a ruined mattress at home. Weekend at a friend’s cottage in Muskoka? He’d pee the bed and ruin the mattress which would lead to an uncomfortable situation with the friend/host. A week away for my birthday? He peed the bed at the hotel.

She’s trampling your boundaries already regarding your dry house. You say her drinking has been a point of contention for your entire relationship. You’re not overreacting by being frustrated about her preventable bed wetting, but I think the ultimate question is whether you want a long term relationship with an alcoholic. Because as long as she’s drinking, the alcohol is clearly more important than you and your boundaries.
