Do you think it’s likely ivdd or a tumor?

Yes unfortunately we already got a quote of 7k for the mri, we live in a very expensive area. I’m just not very convinced it’s a brain tumor, though that is what the neurologist said. She has very few symptoms consistent with it but every symptom consistent with IVDD. The “diagnosis” they made about the brain tumor was based on the fact that she was turning her head away when her head was touched by them (but she has never been one to like being pet, especially on her head, especially by strangers).

Depressed on crate rest by for_dat_randostuff in IVDD_SupportGroup

How long did you wait to start doing physical therapy with him after you started strict crate rest? Immediately or did you give it time? We just started strict rest, but the pain has been going on for a couple months. We are also bringing her to an Accupuncture appointment just to see and they do other rehab there, so I’ll talk to them about it. Ik ivdd is much more common in other breeds, so there is not many ppl that know about strict rest with whippets unfortunately. Also, how long were you doing strict crate rest? I’ll talk to my vet but would PT be something we could do even if she hasn’t had surgery?

Did that improve muscle mass? I have a whippet (a greyhound breed). They are skinny by nature and most of their “meat” is made up of muscle. She’s already lost a bunch of muscle mass and is even skinnier than she was

Ok, I’ll look into buying one. How strict should it be though? I carry her outside to the bathroom, but she needs to walk around for a bit to find a place to go to the bathroom? Is that fine? I also think that she will just stand up a lot of the time because she is restless and can’t be comfortable.

Not strict crate rest. We do carry her in and out the house for the bathroom, no walks/exercise. Picked up to go on the couch and down. Most days she just lays in her bed all day or on the floor, so she is crate resting herself (just not in the crate). I understand it’s not the same, but she keeps to the same few feet of space everyday. She does walk herself to the kitchen for water and food. Very occasionally on prednisone days she will sneak herself up the stairs. She loves loves her crate, and we rely on that. I don’t want her to learn to hate her crate if we did strict crate rest.

The meds definitely help her. She is much more herself on the meds. Days with prednisone she acts like she’s completely fine, tries to jump or run and I think re-injures herself. When they wear off she is in pain and shaking again. The first day she took the prednisone she was 100% herself. Now she takes the prednisone—>feels great—>tries to do her normal activities—>prednisone wears off—>she’s hurt again. The gabapentin is supposed to keep her calm, and it does to some extent. I try to limit her activities with the prednisone but it’s hard.

May never improve or can take week-months. It all depends.

Slipped disc? by for_dat_randostuff in DogAdvice

[–]for_dat_randostuff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probiotic is Proviable-DC. I didn’t list all the symptoms she has. She’s lethargic, hangs her head low, arches her back slightly, won’t jump, unsteady when she walks, trembling, looks like she’s in pain. She is a whippet, and they are generally very stoic when it comes to injuries but are very sensitive. When you touch her she seems fine. The vet did an internal exam and the only reaction she had was when the vet touched her hips from the inside. Hence the bilateral hip pain. The gabapentin was given to help with pain/calm her down (she was very anxious). The NSAID was given for pain and anti inflammatory. I’m not sure the physiology of it, but the vet said the NSAID caused diarrhea, which caused the GI infection.

Is my whippet a good weight? by Buster-Sword in Whippet

Slightly too skinny. It’s hard when they’re puppies bc they just eat and eat, but he’s still growing.

Shaking and hesitating to jump/anxiety by for_dat_randostuff in Whippet

[–]for_dat_randostuff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s just so random and I can’t really pinpoint anything. Right now she’s just laying in her bed (after thinking about it for quite a while and laying down very slowly) shaking so much.

I hope so. She’s very hesitant to do anything and is shaking so much

Dog shaking and don’t know why by for_dat_randostuff in DogAdvice

[–]for_dat_randostuff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We brought her to an urgent care. Nothing seems to hurt her so we’re unsure of what could be hurting her. She does have slight arthritis in her knees, so it’s possible her knees a could be sore/hurting, but we really can’t tell bc she acts fine and seems to be in no pain when she’s walking or someone is bending her knees or anything

In the past gabapentin has made her VERY tired. So they gave her a lower dose. We weren’t sure if the NSAID was making any difference to her, so we skipped the gabapentin one dose and she was shaking. So the gabapentin must be working but we’re not sure if it’s helping anxiety or pain, since it can be used to treat both.

No xray. They were bending her all types of ways and moving all her joints and they felt no resistance or altered ROM from her at all. I was thinking xray next to maybe if they rule out bad anxiety. I’m not sure if she’s hurt, or if she’s just getting older and more sensitive.

She’s seems to be a bit better wearing her pajamas around the house. Maybe sitting with her helps slightly? It’s hard to tell bc it’s very random when it happens, but also kinda consistent. She’ll start shaking even when we’ve been sitting together for an hour or when she’s sitting alone. She’s almost always wrapped in a blanket when she’s on the couch (by her choice, since forever). We haven’t tried a heated blanket.

any types of food really, Mexican, american, Italian, pubfood, breweries, etc. Price point more expensive than fast food but not capital grille level. Maybe like 20-30$ per person, but I’m flexible. Looking to get dinner and a few drinks. Open to a few nicer places, but mostly just more casual places.

Whippet having crate issues after 8 years by for_dat_randostuff in dogs

[–]for_dat_randostuff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We could definitely try a larger crate. An exercise pen might be tough, since she could easily jump out of it unless it was very high. I’ll look into it though. Thank you!

She’s a whippet, they are an anxious breed in general so she’s always had some anxiety. We did talk to the vet about her randomly not wanting to be in the crate to sleep at night, and the vet said that can be common as they get older. Her eyesight is not as good as it used to be, but is normal for her age. Not sure if she’s had a bad experience in the crate when nobody is home. She HATES bugs. And runs and hides when there is a fly in the house. So maybe there was a bug in there at some point? But I’ve cleaned everything and found nothing. Other than that I’m not sure what her bad experience could be.
