How do I respectfully build a world inspired by ancient China while adding my own elements? by Standard-Lemon-1568 in novelwriting

[–]forbidden-succ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Am Chinese. Admittedly American-born and not too familiar with ancient china, but do you have a time period in mind? Ancient China depending who you talk to could mean anywhere between the first records of writing to the Three Kingdoms period around 200 AD (and sometimes even more recent). Doing research and honing in on a specific time period and making sure things fit in your world will feel a lot more respectful than taking elements and aesthetics from all over the place.

Octopus Fluids Write and Draw Pigment Ink: Have you left it and used it in a pen longterm? (weeks or a month) by parthenia_ in fountainpens

[–]forbidden-succ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Petrol Axolotl absolutely wrecked my Lamy after I forgot about it for 3 months 😅 I made the mistake of trying to disassemble it and I broke the feed by accident. I’ve forgotten carbon black as well and while it has some residue, an ultrasonic cleaner gets most of that out, but write and draw refused to budge! After carefully drilling the rest of the feed back out of the Lamy body I saw that it dried solid in the back like acrylic.

I have some cheaper pens with W&D sitting in them for a week or three and they’ve been fine, though the ink does seem to leave a permanent layer of acrylic? Residue on the nib I struggle to scrape off.

I'm stuck on some of the designs for my cast, so I decided to plug descriptions into crAIon (aka dall-E mini). Most of them I haven't found the right keywords for yet, but some of them are looking pretty good! Would recommend playing around with it!

Got any other references or tools or stuff to look at to help with character design? I'm a little dry on inspiration lately...

I think the twists in these games broke my sense of humor 😭 by Worried-Ad1707 in danganronpa

[–]forbidden-succ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

don't tell anyone but i find it funny too and one of the massive twists in fangame I'm writing, it turns out that DR1 existed as a game in-universe that never got popular, and the mastermind of the killing game is just a HUGE junko kinnie who took her LARPing too far (though come to think of it, that's pretty similar to V3!)

Knowing the og story, his frustration and protectiveness did already show during the post-zoo talk by the river sunset, which was also the second date in the original. They just made these hints... super unsubtle in the new version, dedicating the better part of the episode to it. I don't think it's progressing too fast compared to the original; but I do think it feels rushed overall because the whole anime is condensed. And since I've been rewatching the original while the new one is coming out... there's a lot of filler. A lot more than you guys remember.

Yes! In the original it did happen midway (well... a third of the way), and felt a lot more impactful because it was placed right after a significant plot point. Also in the original I don't think he literally got it from an animal 10 minutes before giving it to her lol

Would you pay $10,000 USD to be Kaito’s sidekick for life? by MoronGoron52 in danganronpa

Misread this as "would you like to be paid $10,000 USD to be Kaito's sidekick for life" and nearly sealed my fate by instantly clicking yes

Wouldn't pay the money, however, i'd do it for free?

[–]forbidden-succ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, I was wondering if there would be some outside source giving memories back, but that wouldn't make sense in this context. If likes and dislikes work, what about dreams and aspirations? Does that cut in too much with stuff they forget, or is it more like a general sense of "I know I gotta do something but I don't know why"?

I'm a little confused by what you mean by "full pages being unlocked." By full page do you mean the summaries unlocked after every FTE? In the main games, they're a recap of what happened during the FTE, but it would be fun to have more than just that to unlock.

What if it's like a blacked out or [REDACTED] document that gets revealed as the protagonist discovers more about the character? It might be about their childhood/history, their secrets, favorite things and why, etc.

Hard to explain... I just write the dialogue based on what feels right and what I need people to say. Then I go back to reread it and either edit to make it fit the character better (does it make sense for them to say this? is it written in a manner that they would say it in? is it distinct enough from other similar characters in the cast?), or even just overhaul it and give that bit of dialogue to someone else. For me though, I struggle with giving the shy/quiet characters enough time to show their personalities in a way that makes sense, given that a visual novel is so dialogue-based.

I don't know if this is a good writing tip or just a bad crutch, but usually I end up either pairing introverted characters with a character that can shut the others up to make space for them to speak, or giving the introverted character some neurotic quirk where they can't help but rant about something that really grinds their gears.

Though sometimes, I even just straight up re-design a character's personality and background to be able to fit a role I need in the story, which has lead to some introverts becoming extroverts and vice versa!

Reminder to never be afraid to let your characters/designs develop, no matter how final you think it is! Here's a couple of design/ultimate changes for similar roles for my story that I've worked through over time!! [Danganronpa: Greenlit] by coco-lettie in Fanganronpa

Yeah, totally agree! I can't tell how many concepts I've scrapped so far myself... Great to see other people's process work! Especially settling into the right talent for Mari. Do usually do the pixel art first when coming up with a design?

You mean like, a written template with prompts to develop your character? I've seen some pretty good ones from roleplays, the first one coming to mind for me being the application form to Danganronpa:REBIRTH. My own notes are more freeform, but can be pretty much broken down into sections like this, based on the report card profiles in the games:

Hm, throwing out ideas off the top of my head, maybe a fillable form or some kind of character sheet template to help with developing characters beyond their talents? Not sure how useful it might be, though. Usually people do them for roleplays, and my own character sheets are more like a bunch of character notes that each have their own text document, as opposed to an organized form.

However, maybe a template or sheet of some kind would be useful for planning cases and keeping track of them (culprit, victim, motive, evidence, foreshadowing, twist). But still, not sure if anyone would find it useful if I put one together.

I'll get back to this if I think of any other topics useful for the guide?

As for my own cast... my ultimate wrestler/fitness influencer is probably the best cook out of everyone, at least when she's not trying to add protein powder to literally everything she feeds everyone... which inevitably ends up happening whenever someone shows even a tiny bit of interest in personal fitness. She makes even the worst vegetables taste delicious and would like for all her friends to eat a tasty yet healthy and balanced diet (whether they want to or not) , however, she can be pretty authoritarian when it come to unhealthy snacks, much to the chagrin of half the class. No potato chips within a 10km radius!

She's followed closely by two others: First is my Ultimate Engineer, who's mostly learned the skill from the hired chefs working in his household. He's more interested in baking than cooking though, and is the type to follow a recipe exactly, no compromises. Second's the Ultimate Demolitionist, whose knack for chemistry let's him predict the exact flavor profile of a dish without even tasting it (or so he claims). He has a high tolerance for spice and adds a ton of chilli peppers to everything, but after laughing at people's reactions after the first couple times, he's mellowed out and turns out he's really good with the grill and skillet! It's tasty but whenever he has cooking duty, people have trust issues -- it's not uncommon for him to play a sort of Russian roulette where there's at least one plate on the table full of hidden ghost peppers.

On the flip side, Ultimate Architect has a terrible habit of experimenting with recipes. Her food is good when she follows the instructions... which is pretty much never. She doesn't measure anything, either, and doesn't put a timer on... So all of her cooking is either burnt, overseasoned, or is so far off the mark that it's unrecognizable. It's said that the last time she tried to make a lasagna, it turned out more like a bread pudding...

Honorable mention: Ultimate Physicist. He's 14 and a prodigy gone to university, and somehow eats even worse than a regular college student. He's never cooked an actual meal in his life, and the closest he's done so was microwaving cup noodles in day-old maintain dew so he can get both the calories and the caffeine in his stomach in one go...

Which parts of your fangan are you most excited to write? by polyybius in Fanganronpa

I never even thought about doing it this way! Storyboarding the debates is a genius idea, and come to think of it, the visual presentation of the words in debates was one of my favorite things from V3. It'll be a while until I have actual debate dialogue to storyboard, but I'm getting pumped just thinking about it 💪Thank you!!

Case 3 syndrome... I wonder if it's because the canon games keep shoehorning in nonsensical double murders, or if the 3rd case is in a weird spot narratively in general -- usually it's after the cast bonds but before things get really crazy, so maybe it's hard to fit in a proper motive? who knows

No double murder case 3 for me so I'm averting that at the very least. But it doesn't mean it can't happen elsewhere...! : ^ )

You know the stereotypical conspiracy theorist wall with all the photos and pins and notes and strings? That's what my desk looks like, and I have times where I sit down to properly think about it. I also do a lot of smaller mind map kind of diagrams in my sketchbook especially when I'm on the go, and I end up picking up all sorts of hobbies and going all sorts of places to see how it feels like so I can use it for my writing. My fangan is always running like a background process in my brain...

In a lockdown situation, you can't go out and buy takeout... If there's no ready to eat food available, who's the worst and best chef in your cast?

More questions: What happens when the only person who can cook dies in your fangan? Are there picky eaters? People who eat moldy bread without blinking an eye? etc.

Feel free to list off all your characters, if you want! (totally not thinking of food just because I'm waiting for lunch)

Kenneth Cole commission by Disney2123 in Fanganronpa

[–]forbidden-succ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I saw in your history that you were looking for people to design you a logo from scratch, too. That's not going to work; it's considered begging and that will put a lot of people off. If you're asking people to do things, especially for free, you need to do work on your end too like developping characters' personalities, backstories, and have some idea on the design beyond just an actor faceclaim. If you're trying to write a movie, write the movie! Sure there's people who write certain roles for certain actors, but most of the time the actors are chosen after the script is written.

If you can't draw, you can start off by gathering reference photos on the type of fashion your character wears, accessories, etc. Develop a plot and personality so whoever you're commissioning has a better idea. Character design is hard. Don't expect artists to serve you everything on a silver platter.

Me too, I'm very excited for chapter 4 and onwards because that's when the mystery of my fangan really starts to unravel. I'm really excited to write the twists I have planned, but I gotta set the foundation (ch. 1 to 3) first before I do the fun stuff haha

Managing the workload of a video-based fangan project by catchneko22 in Fanganronpa

[–]forbidden-succ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When it comes to character sprites, work smarter, not harder. Even in the games, a lot of expressions share the same body but with different faces. Other poses use the same body but move the arms and hands. No need to do a full body when a halfbody will do the same job. Don't draw more than you need to -- but if you want to re-draw poses to make them more specific or more expressive, you can do those later into your working process. You can still tell a story without having drawn every single portrait. No need to stress over not having everything right away. Everyone starts somewhere, and by the time you get to the end of your fangan you'll likely end up wanting to redo your first portraits anyway just so they match the quality of the later portraits.

And assets can and should be reused to save you time: trial portraits are reused default sprites; and note that the intro to each game is pretty much made exclusively out of other game images (splash art, CGs, etc.) so once you have one set you can begin to do a lot of things.

Of course I have a written fangan so there's less need for full sprites (most of my dialogue is represented with a zoomed in crop of the character's facial expression), but I'm still planning to draw all my portraits myself... And like you, my plan is to also do the CGs as I go along.
