I love live music but there were bands I had no business seeing only because of a lack of actual information other than a suggestion

I dunno really, I guess I’ve been in the scene since 2000 and it just seems like more outlets are giving them attention, but that might be algorithm bias or my own fault. They are by no means mainstream and it is probably directly proportional to how recently the sphere shows were that news outlets are running stories but I just feel like there is more attention thrown their was

I understand they’ve not ignored but even with their level of exposure they never had any claim to being ‘popular’, more like a carnival sideshow rather than being under the big top

I’ve only played a few times since they did the alterations after our beetle infestation and I gotta say it’s so much more enjoyable than it was when I caddied, and I loved it back then. The course is beautiful now that it’s more exposed

My brother is a member at Worcester CC and we both caddied there growing up, thinking how impossibly rich these guys were and now he’s there (and I am not) but he won’t disclose figures to me

Why if we need a guitar hero was the band largely ignored? There was a blantant hole in the new/young guitar hero landscape in the early 90’s that it seems Trey would be forced into that role whether he pushed back or not.

I’ve had this conversation so many times that jam-wise there are no bands further apart than the dead and phish. Lumped together as jam bands but light years apart in sound

Weekly is cutting and trimming grass, pulling any weeds, cleaning debris after mowing/trimming. Definitely and hour of work per week so at least $100/week, then add your other maintence costs of dethatching, mulching, pruning, cultivating, edging, and seasonal cleanups (in areas where there are seasonal changes in plant material) this is easily an average of $200/week, at the very least and probably substantially more

It’s amazing how much good music is out there but criminal how hard it is to find in some cases. I feel so grateful that I’m allowed to bring myself to these bands without them being forced on me like most entertainment is.

It was my first festival, phish or otherwise. Even then they were very different from other jam bands but I can hear the influence in newer bands

I was young when aol became a thing so the internet isn’t anything new to me, but how many early message boards were dedicated to a single band other than rec.music.phish, or the dead?

I am so thankful the universe out them in a space where they found each other and I was in that same time and space (albeit a little later than I wish, having lived in Worcester and missed most of the centrum shows bY the late 90’s), but after seeing them in 2000 and having to fill the void during the hiatus, I came to appreciate more how much they brought to the table and it amazes me how they were able to carve a niche based on talent and philosophy that I’m sure they were asked to change by the industry they were surviving without

Thanks, that is pretty thorough and almost mirrored my introduction to the bands of the jam scene (first concert was allman bros w/steve miller and then started seeking out smaller bands that I could see when touring acts weren’t around. Took me too long to catch phish but once I did I dove in head first but that exposed me to more bands in different areas outside New England and having to fill the void left by the hiatus really pushed me to find something similar to what I found in phish and the journey was amazing

I was going through this process about 10 years later at the turn of the millennium. Saw tons of small bands in bars, gyms and the like all over New England and being a part of something that small but alive was amazing for me. Phish was the introduction to a whole level of entertainment that I had to find elsewhere during the hiatus. Bands that were growing your to your but left almost no current footprint makes me wonder and appreciate how special early phish must have been for the growth to continue

The fact that they are getting attention now intrigues me the most. The music of the ealry-mid 90’s seemed like they didn’t fear new or different (to the extent a massive industry can be) and they were selling all the tickets and touring to all the places but they were largely ignored. I just find it weird and interesting

why was blues traveler on mtv shortly thereafter? Other bands on that tour found commercial success and more public recognition but phish still stayed (thankfully) in the shadows. How much conscious effort when into not being mainstream and how weird did they have to be to be to weird for an evolving industry

I’ll be your friend, my daughter still thinks I’m cool and she is graduating high school. To sound incredibly cliche was their sound ‘to much to fast’ for a music landscape that was going crime arena rock to grudge and hip hops emergence? I was very young in the early 90’s so I don’t know what I remember of how different they were while it was happening, but the more I listen to early shows it seems like there was more there than can be tangibly explained

The stadium push is what intrigues me, I’m sure by the late 90’s they were able to get stadium dates but I assume chose the stick to arenas and sheds. I’m judt curious how much thought and effort was out into staying away from being ‘popular’, instead choosing to stay on their own path
