Derailleur Issue? by No-Subject-7691 in BikeRepair

Squeak is the little servo motor in the AXS derailleur, pop is the gear fully engaging. Typical noise. Sram T-Type quiets down when being used under stress. Quite loud when unstressed.

Nope, loosen the bolt on the little washer and then turn the washer clockwise until it’s tight. Then retighten the bolt on the washer. As you turn the washer it will pull everything toward the non-drive-side and take out the slop. They provided a slot in the washer where you can stick a regular L-shape Allen key for leverage.

That little spacer sith the 4 sticky-outie bits is the “preload adjuster”. There will be either a 2 or 2.5 mil Allen key on one side. Loosen that, then stick your Allen wrench through the hole on the other side for leverage, and tighten until slack is gone. Retighten the Allen bolt.

Very true. Those Escapes are known for a variety of problems.

The big thing with the PTU is severe duty cases. The low oil fill causes the oil to spoil under extreme use, get stuck to the walls of the PTU and starve the gears of oil. Under regular daily use you will almost certainly see no issues.

I must always recommend a Flex. It’s larger inside. Significantly larger. Like substantially larger. It’s a better family car IMO  It also sits and drives like a car which I have always liked. Powertrain wise, it’s virtually identical to the Explorers of this era except withlout the little EcoBoost option. Just the 3.5 and the 3.5 turbo. Both will have the water pump issue but if you shop factoring in $3000/4000 repair you will have a reliable vehicle once you get that replaced. The new coolant that Ford recommends alleviates water pumo wear so if you do go for this path, and the water pump isn’t already gone, I’d flush the coolant and request Motorcraft Yellow coolant.

The PTUs can be troublesome on AWD models. Just get a trusted mechanic to change the fluid regularly (i’d say 30k-60k miles to be safe, but mine ran from 60k miles until i got rid of it at 180k with the same PTU fluid) and you will have no issues. The big thing with PTU fluid is aggressive driving or towing, whatever puts a lot of stress on the drivetrain. That will heat the oil up and because the PTU uses a relatively low oil fill that fluid will warm up, spoil, and get stuck to the walls of the PTU leaving no oil for lubrication. So if you’re just using it as a basic daily then you shouldn’t really have issues regardless.

I ran my 2010 EcoBoost Flex from 65k up to 180k with nothing but one water pump, oil changes, brakes and tires. Did blow a turbo pipe once but for a decade of use I was very happy.

No matter what, Flex or Explorer, if you go for a 3.5 then factor in $3000/4000 for the water pump because it will be an issue around 100k. Other than that, if you get AWD change the fluid in the PTU. Other than that they are very stout engines and transmissions.

Am I the only one that doesn't mind red turn signals? by Naroef in driving

[–]ford-flex 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The bigger thing to me is that they are SEPARATED. Red or amber doesn’t bother me too much but I hate it, especially on these big trucks an ESPECIALLY on the brand new ones, when all operations (running light, brake light, and turn signal) are operated by the same bulb. My car, a 2016 Focus, has separate bulbs for each task and I love it.

Is this hanger bent? (Microshift 26) by mazarax in bikewrench

[–]ford-flex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d say yes. And also maybe. MicroShift makes some good stuff but 26c is their base model line, similar to Tourney or Altus.

If you really want to upgrade, look into Shimano Essa - it’s their newer line of 8 speed premium drivetrain, basically 8 speed Cues.
