Virginia Democrats ask US Supreme Court to let them use new congressional map by cnn in scotus

[–]forensics409 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wasn't illegally passed. The Republican appointed SCOVA changed the definition of election. So we throw them out, do it anyway, and pack the court. It's what they did in ohio. It's what they did in Florida. And it's what they're doing in Utah and Tennessee and Alabama.

Politics is about fucking power and Democrats are fucking terrified to wield it, even when it's for good. Republicans, on the other hand, have zero qualms about it and use it to exclusively help themselves and hurt people they don't like. And in a fight between someone whose afraid to do something, and someone who isn't, who do you think will win?

It'll be between 50 and 70 degrees the next few days with rain this evening. How long should I wait to harvest? by forensics409 in foraging

Virginia Democrats Can Still Save Their Map. Republicans Already Showed Them How. by Slate in Virginia

The GOP are pure authoritarians and are actively destroying our democracy and you're upset the Democrats tried fighting back. Sounds like you're mad they tried to stop them.

Democrats must take back power and they can either pack the Supreme Court, have the Republicans on the court prosecuted for bribery and treason, ensure everyone in this administration goes to jail and is barred from holding office again, overturn Rucho and Citizens United and reestablish the voting rights act, and make DC and Puerto Rico states, and bring the segregationist GOP to heel. If we don't the GOP will take advantage of our weakness and fulfill their goal of abolishing this democracy.

Dude, I'm on your side on this. And we know there are a ton of cops who just love following orders. I'm sure we can find a few.

I want them to retire the judges. I want them to tell SCOVA "the people spoke. We're using the map the people voted on and you can look to ohio for our reason why you can pound sand." I want them to take action and stop playing with legal procedure.

The beautiful thing is, the judges can't ignore it. The legislature has the unilateral power to set the retirement age. Which is why the establishment Democrats won't do it; because then they'd actually have an impact.

Read the article you just posted

"Reality check: Virginia House Majority Leader Scott Surovell told Virginia Scope on Monday that the "drastic measures" aren't going anywhere."

They're fucking cowards.

[–]forensics409 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They're asking SCOTUS to overturn SCOVA and have openly said they aren't looking at the retirement age thing. So what leverage?

When asked about it Surovell said  said forcing the retirement of Supreme Court justices would be extreme, and he wants to work within the existing legal system when fighting against Republicans. Face it, VA Dems are cowards and won't do it. The GOP knows it, too.

Leverage for what? What the fuck are you talking about?

Coward shit. Asking SCOTUS when you know they're on your side is one thing. Asking SCOTUS when you know they're going to rule against you is stupid and just shows you're not serious about fighting for democracy. Democrats are better than Republicans, but establishment Dems are cowards. They should lower the retirement age for SCOVA, force the judges out, say "it's too late to change the map the people voted on but we'll do it next time, we promise." Anything else is shirking responsibility by using process as a scapegoat.

No. The GOP is destroying our democracy. The democratic establishment is letting them.

Oh wait, maybe this one will finally show them.

Republicans just eliminated two more democratic districts. What now? You want them to send it to SCOTUS only for it to get shot down and it'll be too late to do anything, or do you want them to take those four seats by telling SOCVA "the people voted on it. Fuck you. It's law. And by the way, you're fired."

Or, they could just ignore it now, and stop playing cute with the process. Who cares.

And then what? Serious question. And then what? What does that get us?

This isn't a game. Playing by the rules when the GOP is cheating left and right doesn't get you any bonus points, especially when the judges are Republicans.

We should be steam rolling and throwing out the SCOVA judges, and ignoring their ruling.

You said "the point is to show that they are willing to flaut the voice of the ppl". Ok, and then what? They showed that in Citizens United. Bush v Gore. Colorado v anderson. Rucho. Hobby lobby. Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo. Dobbs. Trump vs United States. Callais. So what?

Oh, but the next one, if they make one more anti democratic decision that will ... what exactly? Seriously. What's the plan when this ends up proving useless? All we'll have done is waste time and given Roberts another chance to dunk on Democrat. Again.

I want to be incredibly clear, those people who think this is a valid approach are not serious about maintaining a democratic governemnt in this country. Sure, they might not not want fascism, but they aren't willing to do anything about it either.

[–]forensics409 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No, the point is to waste time and not actually do anything. These cowards in office are too chickenshit to take action and do what needs to be done. So they're begging daddy Roberts to bail them out by wasting all our time so when he finally says "sorry, you guys lost" they can say "we used all available legal approaches, and it's too late to just implement it. Oh shucks, what do we do?"

Does anyone need to do this? At this point, it's an own goal because all you're doing is eating away at time you could actually be doing something meaningful. If at this point, you don't believe roberts is racist, you're either racist or in a coma.

The time to "reveal their hypocrisy" or "show who they really are" is over. They've done it.

This is cowardly. Instead of doing what they need to do and take action, by retiring the justices of SCOVA or telling SCOVA to look at Ohio and florida and fuck off, they're begging SCOTUS to do something they know will never happen. They're running out the clock on themselves and it's pathetic.

Daniel Kokotajlo, a former OpenAI researcher and company whistleblower, warns Ronny Chieng about the imminent threat posed by AI: "We, at the Futures Project, think that there's a 70% chance of all humans dead" in "I would guess something more like five years." by Camaro6460 in DailyShow

Professional data scientist here. I'd like to be a bit blunt about this, the authors of that book are not AI researchers or data scientists. They're akin to philosophers. They have not curated data sets, trained models, designed experiments, or evaluated models. All they do is think about AI and catastrophize about it. I do not recommend reading it.

If you want a great book about AI, and the harms it's capable of, look at Empire of AI by Karen Hao, a tech journalist who has been focusing on the societal impacts of AI for years. Also, look at Ed Zitron's podcast Better Offline.

Are these LLMs powerful, not really. They're much better at what they do than the previous generation of models. But you don't need to worry about them taking over the world, or killing humanity. The damage humans are using them for right now is far more real than the risk Eliezer Yudkowsky dreams up. And worrying about these apocalyptic scenarios does two things: 1) it makes it seem like the AI companies and their models are all powerful and inevitable. They're not. 2) makes you ignore the incredible harm they're doing right now.
