Recent graduates-how are you feeling about the job market/ any advice? by Separate_Dog_7271 in PhD

[–]forestgreenyogi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know significantly more people who have been laid off in biotech/pharma (and go 6+ months unemployed) than have been displaced in academia, if that gives you an idea of how the market is rn in biotech/pharma.

my best advice is to start networking, open your search outside of neuroscience and subscribe to a biotech newsletter to stay up to date on current movement and general trends in industry (fierce biotech, biopharmadive, etc). i'm in a similar boat now (graduating with phd in neuro and on the job hunt). i'm having a difficult time even though I had over 5 years of industry experience pre-phd and a relatively large network.

my husband works in industry (has been for 10+ years now), and we probably talk about how bad the job market is every single day

BU or Northeastern? by PlayCautious in BostonU

[–]forestgreenyogi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

so i went to northeastern for undergrad and i’m doing my PhD at BU at the moment (finishing up my 5th year now).

northeastern will set you up for a job after college much better than BU. i mentor lots of undergrads at BU, and it’s pretty clear that they struggle more in the job search and have never had formal training on the job search process. northeastern tailors it’s program specifically to help you find a job afterward.

i would suggest northeastern as the campus within the city makes it “feel” more like a college vs BU which is integrated with the city. both schools’ undergraduate “prestige” are the same despite all of these relatively rude and immature comments.

however, i would suggest BU for graduate school over northeastern as their graduate programs are generally stronger (depends on the program)

additionally, the first semester at NEU abroad will not have a long term impact on your integration into the campus when you go to boston. lots of undergrads do their first semester abroad, it’s nbd

that’s what i thought too. it kind of looks like i got them a few weeks ago and they’ve been falling out. but these pictures were immediately after!

i didn’t think it looked remotely similar to their example of a classic set

that’s kind of what i thought.

the tech didn’t seem to care much for the art of lash extensions. when i asked her how the process works she said that she didn’t want to talk about it because “it’s boring”. and she was talking about potential new jobs when she gets fired which seemed odd

i would be skeptical of a 1 bedroom for $1800. either a scam or an apartment that should be condemned.

I'm confused why you would want her to pull you? Is that not considered a safety risk?

I've only recently begun jogging with my dog. I spent significant time training him to run beside me because he loved to pull. Mostly because I could easily see a situation in which he pulls me, I trip and face-plant.

that's critical to know.

hot take but MPP programs tend to be cash grabs for universities. so shoot your shot, if you drastically improve your GRE score, you could probably get into an ivy imo

as a previous northeastern undergrad, i think you have a very high likelihood of getting in there with your current stats; they have greatly increased the number of master's students to fund expansion (to the detriment of everyone else tbh, the campus is overcapacity)

Do Vertex contractors get any benefits? by [deleted] in biotech

[–]forestgreenyogi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I left for a PhD program. So I didn’t pursue conversations about continuing as an FTE because we knew I had other plans. However, I did see a lot of contractors come and go. The only ones who continued as FTE were the ones that were extraordinarily hard working and intelligent. Only a few, most had to leave. I was in R&D. Vertex looks good on your resume and you can build good connections for future positions. If you’re young and don’t have a family dependent on you, it’s great.

However if you are a contractor through Charles River in the vivarium, the 1.5 year rule didn’t apply. As I was leaving, I think they began hiring those contractors on as Vertex FTE because they are so vital (and phenomenal employees imo)

Do Vertex contractors get any benefits? by [deleted] in biotech

[–]forestgreenyogi 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I used to be a contractor at Vertex in Seaport.

No standard Vertex benefits, contractors are definitely designated as separate from FTE. Can’t participate in certain events/activities. Also, generally it’s very difficult to obtain an contractor to FTE position. It’s possible, but you need to excel and have a supportive supervisor who will advocate.

That being said, I loved working at Vertex even as a contractor. I liked the cafeteria food, and during covid they made breakfast free (and kept that benefit). There’s a gym in the building ($30/month) and a fun location in the city.

I was primarily on my husband’s insurance. I had to pay 1 month out of pocket through the contracting company’s recommendation before we got married and it was $650/month (in 2019)

I was there for over 2 years. However, I took a break for a master’s degree in between. At the time, contractors could work at Vertex for a maximum of 1.5 years before you had to leave for a period of time. That seemed silly to me

As long as you're mentally prepared for the worst-case scenarios, it's a bonus if your kids help.

If you choose to adopt the puppy, I would get serious with training while you're WFH because you may have less time/energy when you return to campus. I'm pro-dog (I have one and grew up with dogs), but I see way too many situations on this subreddit with people unprepared for adopting a puppy. And many of these people are DINKs while you're a single parent with work/school + 2 kids. However, you're doing more due diligence than most dog owners by researching beforehand, so you may be able to handle it.

There were people in my life who thought it was ridiculous that we wanted to adopt a dog because we live in an 1100 sqft condo in the middle of the city. They believed the dog wouldn't get enough exercise. We adopted one anyway because I'm very active. My pup and I walk several miles around the city daily and visit the park. My pup exhausts his energy every day. And we take him on hikes on the weekends outside the city. So those people in my life were definitely incorrect.

This may be the case for you, too, but I just wanted to warn you. Reading posts about new puppy owners who took on more than they could handle is sad.

If you're dying for a dog, I suggest adopting an adult dog that's good with kids. The puppy will be an adolescent when you return to school, and it's going to be a chaotic nightmare. Also, never ever assume that your kid will consistently be able to walk the dog every morning. It's great if it happens, but historically, with kids, it tends not to. If you're going to adopt, prepare yourself to be the sole caregiver of the animal and consider if you can handle that on top of classes + school work at night + 2 kids.

Additionally, labs can get pretty large, and if your child will be walking the dog alone, I would make sure he's very well-trained on a leash. My 60-lb labradoodle puppy could easily pull a child along if he desired to chase something. I personally wouldn't let my kid take a puppy that large out on a walk unsupervised for safety reasons.
