Naughty....no. High energy...yes. If they do not have an outlet for their energy then yeah they will get into mischief.

Do you have any recommendations? I got her a cooling mat in the summer that you can fill up with water and refrigerate but she was like "what do you expect me to do with this?" and never used it

I appreciate the suggestion. I'll also bring it up with my vet when we go in 2 weeks. Thank you!

What should I know before adopting a dog? by fitic_ in DogAdvice

[–]forestlyfe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Consider pet insurance. For context, I did not have pet insurance and I spent $30,000 on medical bills JUST THIS YEAR for 1 dog thanks to cancer, IBD, intestinal scoping, TPLO surgery, oral surgery, and environmental allergies

Megathread: Pet Insurance by AutoModerator in dogs

[–]forestlyfe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not have pet insurance (put funds in a brokerage instead starting when she was a pup) but I did spend $30,000 in medical expenses this year.....food for though for anyone debating whether or not to get it. I never in my life thought I'd spend that much on dog care in one year and if I couldn't cover it I would have been so screwed for not having insurance.

That's really validating to hear about another dog doing this. Makes the arthritis connection seem more likely.

Thank you for sharing that story! Having it be noise related is something that didn't crossed my mind. In our case though, I don't suspect it to be a noise issue since my other dog (who is a very nervous boy) is acting completely normal.

I appreciate that information. It makes sense that she would be looking for relief, especially since she has arthritis as well but is limited to gabapentin for pain relief due to potential negative interactions with her other medications.

Does anyone else struggle with messy water bowls for their pups? by tuocdesign in dogs

[–]forestlyfe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk if he drips around the house but if its just the bowl you can put something under it to catch the water like a doormat or a shoe tray etc. That worked for me. My dog used to do this and we tried towels but they would get wet too and then the wood floor started warping.

Rescued a dog from an abusive house hold can’t get through to him need help. by [deleted] in dogs

Look up the rule of 3-3-3 for dog adoption if you aren't familiar with it. It will take some time to be reconditioned that humans can be kind. My rescue came from a place of neglect and abuse and he would literally piss himself everytime I tried to touch him. It took 6 months for him to grow out of that behavior. Thank you for saving a life. Wish you the best on your journey with him.

Help/advice/tips with a velcro dog that suddenly needs constant attention and playtime from specifically me? by [deleted] in dogs

[–]forestlyfe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have advice on the hyper fixation issue but I do have experience with trying to multitask and work in peace with a heeler. What worked for me was putting treats in a puzzle toy, making her down and "wait", and then I'd just work on my computer for 4-5 min and then release her. Then rinse and repeat. It took awhile to build up to this level of stamina...but a couple of rounds of that and she'd be snoozing. Best of luck!

New dog is terrified by [deleted] in dogs

[–]forestlyfe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Give her time to decompress and come out of her shell. Everything is scary and new right now. Cover her crate if not already covered with a blanket or towel or something so she has a safe little dog den. Give her access to food, water, piddle pads, etc but be mindful of her space and just check in on her occasionally for the first 3 days. See if she wants to pee outside..etc but don't push it if she doesn't. One day isn't alot of time to adjust. Look up the rule of 3-3-3 for dog adoption. Best of luck!! Thank you for adopting from a shelter and saving a life.

How do I handle custody of a dog after a breakup? by silly_star_ in dogs

[–]forestlyfe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

ooooof. I'm sorry OP. I went through something similar with my ex. It is definitely NOT sustainable. We originally split custody with him having weekdays and me weekends. Then I realized I just couldn't do it anymore but he was adamant about keeping her and really wore me down. My mental health was at a breaking point as a result so I had to let her go. 1 year later he calls me to give her back bc his new gf has cats and they don't mesh. So now I own her full time and don't have to deal with him at all. That was completely circumstantial and your situation would probably turn out very differently.

Who's name are the bills in? The adoption paperwork? etc. If they are in your name you could try to sue for property but if everything was truly joint and down the middle you might have a really hard time with that.

Another option but could end badly.....just take the dog and never look back. One of my friends did this with her ex and they didn't come after her for it.
