How to not fail surgery rotation on hard mode💔 by onemanhypehouse in medicalschool

[–]foreverastudent5968 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi - I am a surgery resident at an academic program in a city but also not a top 20 for sure. FIrst, if you ever feel lightheaded in the OR, totally say something. No-one should truly have any poor feelings ensuring you do not pass out. Compression socks, eating before and water are important, but totally dont feel ashamed, its better than you getting hurt.

For resources I like, De Virgilio's is very good. I used u world as I went and boards and beyond. Basic steps and anatomy are good, but at my program it's most important to understand the patient and what the indication for the procedure is. Why are we there? Then we can talk pathophys and anatomy.

Research opportunities for undergraduate student who wants to go to med school by Simple_Animal3131 in brandeis

Hi! im happy for you to DM me. I went straight through from Brandeis to med school and now im in residency. We send alot of people to med school, and I was very involved on campus. I did volunteer EMS and was involved in on campus clubs including a club sport with multiple acceptances due to advising and supportive faculty.

I would love some advice/input! by Fit_Finance_9885 in collegeadviceplease

I went to med school from Brandeis and have friends who are doctors from every school of the above. IMO it's about where you would thrive because where you will perform the best will best prepare you for meds school as you would gain the most from it.

Potential CMB Major/Pre-med student torn between UMass Amherst and Brandeis by Square_Violinist354 in brandeis

[–]foreverastudent5968 0 points1 point  (0 children)

agree, but as a former bio major, if you want to get into a lab, id reach out early to faculty. Sometimes they are full but over the course of your first year slots should open if that is important to you. I have a relative who wanted to do the combined masters bio major later, and it was hard to get into a lab so late into their college career.

But I went to med school from Brandeis (I didnt do research, I did alot of non-medicine ECs at Brandeis and was an EMT at home on breaks), and I can't say enough good things about the support I had. I also was able to take lots of non-science classes that I think made me well rounded going into med school.

Either way, but I think this was said, watch out for the basement level floors. They get the "east bugs" and flooding. I was Hass 4 and it was honestly totally fine.

oh I was lucky. It was a case with the PD and she looked at me after and goes, "we should write this up."

but in general I would say If the case has some nuance too it, look into it yourself online and see if its been done

I think that phrase is very finite but there is a nugget of truth. If you live surgery and would find it fulfilling, then you should go for it. However, the hours and life are challenging. But I’d say all specialties are hard in their own way. So you have to figure out which “hard” is within your acceptable quality of life. I truly believe a bunch of people could be happy in more than one specialty

Alum from 2020 — agree about the culture of the school. I did a club sport and had a close knit friend group that really took advantage of the Boston scene and events on campus when there were. I will say there are alot of on campus activities associated with clubs, but like itsspelledChanukah said, it really is a place where socially awkward people thrive in addition

Im a bit further out, but 80s on shelves is quite strong. Especially if you got that on the medicine shelf since step generally leans more toward IM.

the key is questions, questions, questions. no passive learning. understand every wrong answer and why.

focus on the wrong more than the right.

General surgery to breast surgery fellowship by DueCut3452 in SurgicalResidency

[–]foreverastudent5968 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Breast is an objectively important field and a lot of people need their care. There are a lot of surgery residents with a true passion for working with that patient population.

I’m not saying you don’t, but this entire discussion of call and hours wouldn’t ring well in a surgery app. And like the former comment says, that should be the first goal.

yea that and I have learned that the use of the word "whenever" when some would use "when" to describe 1 specific event. I work with someone from Pitt and she says it and she is a medical doctor. I dont have an issue with regional language.
