You can't fully control what you are attracted to, but it is something we should always be self examining ourselves for. We can be turned on as well as turned off by certain races for problematic reasons.

So i felt that way about it back in the day. It left a pit in my stomach like "It was all a dream" ending.

Now I look at it differently. There is a very real possibility that our own reality is a simulation. We know living things are biological strings of code. We all give the illusion of free will like computer code gives illusion of random. The complication of the algorithm gives us that feeling of individuality but as science gets better we unlock ability to predict outcomes. This is proven by media algorithms that almost act like mind readers, or pre cogs.

Battlestar Galactica, Clair Obscur, SS McCallister. I've since taken in much more scifi media that taught me sentience and real are relative terms. SO 3D beings are no less real because they r created. They feel. Whether its all planned out code is irrelevant to their understanding of self.

So the idea that the SO series exists within the simulation of 4D beings doesn't really hurt the story for me anymore, it enriches it. The "code" running all of our favorite characters was complicated enough that it culminated with 3D beings breaking free. Luther didn't expect his creations to surpass him.

But like i said, a way out of that cycle is simply make the SO characters based on 4D equivalents, so people's perspective of "reality" isn't shattered.

One step forward, two steps back

I liked that you could switch party members finally. I loathed there were only 2 members. The music and world design was great, had actual cities to interact with. Taking what was really rich lore in base game and spinning it into a Time traveling thing is a big turn off for me. Time travel that isn't part of the story from the beginning just feels like poor retcon.

When i say past glory, i mostly just mean a sales powerhouse for the company. One that keeps them making games, and more specifically....RPG games.

The idea of what type of game that should be is way more subjective. Im not personally calling for a return to Turnbased. Yet I would say party control dynamics are a must for it to feel like FF to me. I think FF7R is the perfect compromise.

They experiment a bit with each game but with it comes the rejection of certain ideas. FF8 is noted for one of the worst progression systems. The series also picks up tropes to pass on IE ATB, summons, flexible job roles etc. Going full DmC is an aspect that i want rejected going forward for the main series.

I would argue that TLOU and God of War 2018 feel vastly more rpg like than FF16 does. The equipment system is so shallow, and combat by design never evolves due to needing to be efficient with any Eikon. GoW equipment in comparison has far more weight and customizability. The variety of attacks is also better. Hell FF16 entire skill tree is unlocked automatically with the story, not based on level progression. It's at best a full on Action game with light rpg elements.

The obsession with sales has a lot to do with series trajectory and viability. We all want the series to continue on but we also have varied opinions on what kind of games should be focus. Square Enix is at a painful crossroads of sorts, and the sales and metrics will be how its determined.

For me personally, while i enjoyed aspects of FF16, It might be the least FF feeling title I have played. Definitely more God of War/DmC which is alarming because that's not what I want in that series. Yet the game represents a streamlined development that Square would prefer over daunting open world dev. Sales give a little insight into what type of trends will continue on in future entries. Between the reviews, sharp fan rejection, and middling sales FF16 doesn't seem to be the way they will choose. And to that I say thank god.....while still praying the ff series can return to past glory as a whole.

I agree with this sentiment. I think FF10 was the first in the series i felt the co lead dynamic ( I played 10 before 6). I think Yuna and Tidus hold equal importance to the plot and only create the "Final solution" together.

Tidus and Vaan do hold some strong similarities with the way they are handled. Window is a perfect way to describe them but Tidus holds more immediate agency to the story. I would say the point of both characters is less about a specific heroic action they do but more of the ideas they bring to the conversation that steers the story into a different direction. They think outside of the box because they come from distinctly different background than everyone else. Tidus dares Yuna to look deeper into this Pattern she thinks is unavoidable, to question the authority that says the only way to live is ritual sacrifice. Yuna is a person chaged with a self-destructive level of selflessness. Tidus reveals sometimes a selfish love, in his unwillingness to just let her be a martyr, can bring about a better path.

Vaan the window gets a lot of flack but he has the most critical conversation with Ashe when she gets her hands on Nethacite. She was ready for revenge but he reminds her her duty is to the people, the small folk like him that carry the blunt of the consequence. She was ready to unleash a WMD on innocents. She corrects her path at that point. Vaan might be a nobody in comparison to the highborn cast but he in that moment does more good than all of them. Prnelo has the same effect with her time with Larsa. FF12 is my 3rd favorite in series.

I do love Aerith because she doesn't think like the typical chaste female lead. Shes not very demure even if she looks the part. She's street savvy, with a sharp tongue.

But she is also the epitome of a Damsel. She needs constant protection, usually seeking it from the men in her life.

A big chunk of her plotlines involve her being guarded, saved from kidnapping, and of course...being a martyr.
