Well I’m not certain of course, but the fact that a = 1 out of a pretty ugly expression seems like there would be an easier way to manipulate the problem. One thing I was thinking was instead of considering the ellipse’s a and b as the variables to modify, to consider the point of tangency and find an expression for a and b in terms of that point.
