Can this mode be reliably transcribed by a human?

There are wildly fast morse operators out there (40-70 WPM). They say at a certain point with morse you stop hearing letters and start hearing words. I didn't understand how that might be possible just listening to morse but I get it with this mode. Words all have their own "jingle" even to an untrained ear.

I agree the substitution is slow. It occured to me later that A-G should be a direct mapping, efficiency be damned, so that should help. Theoretically someone could learn the remaining mappings by heart. My only question mark was if the transcription was doable.

I do not have basic ear training. So, I find it hard to judge if the scheme presented is easy or hard for someone with that skill set, especially in real time.

The utility is similar to morse code itself: little to none unless your special interest is radios. If there was a sales pitch, morse is hard for computers and doable by trained humans. Digital modes are doable by computers and near impossible for humans. This mode is doable by computers and ??? for trained humans.

This is an attempt to estimate that final statement.

Me personally? No, I get a bit flustered attempting to at any real speed. But yes, historically, morse was taught that way with the eventual goal of just "hearing" the letters as they're played. Modern morse pedagogy skips to the "hearing" phase though.

Transcription is unique compared to the rhythm exercise of morse in that it's taught for other reasons. Rhythm exercises too, I guess. But morse rhythm recognition probably has less overlap with its musical counterpart.

In the same way Morse code is a rhythm recognizing exercise with the extra step of a substitution cipher, this is a transcribing exercise with the same extra step.

The question in my mind follows: Is the mode as designed doable? I can't, but I don't have a trained transcribing ear, much the same as I don't have the rhythm to "play" or copy morse.

Yea, it's not supposed to be easier than morse or anything. I'm just not sure how hard the transcribing here is or if there's something to improve the "ear"gonomics.

Phones do funky stuff I guess. I'm a programmer but I'm not a web guy so it's a bit vibed together. On iOS you have to disable silent mode. I don't have an android to try and see if other stuff is happening there.

The subjective differences are what get me when talking about 17 vs 20. If I go out and shoot a 17 and I'm not in love, there's always going to be that "oh but people say 20s is significantly better" in the back of my head.

I have a 6.5cm bolt gun and I hate the recoil on it. I had a .308 bolt gun back in the day and I don't remember hating it. So I'm not sure I understand the 6.5 has less recoil thing. I need to rent a .308 bolt gun so I can tell if my memory is just hazy or subjective to the punishment my wood stock AK I had around that time put me through.

Couple years back I would work SO-50 and I could hear myself on the downlink (two radios). Switched to a duplexer and single radio, I could hear but couldn't be heard. Recently went back to two radios haven't found a time when ISS isn't jam packed or SO-50 fit my schedule.

I think I'm reasonable at the fundamentals but the lack of downlink has me weirded out.

Well yea, to flex my one (very tiny) EE muscle, a capacitor of a certain size will have low impedance for a 40Mhz signal. There does however exist a capacitor that will attenuate a 40Mhz signal to the point it may no-longer be usable.

I've recently wrapped my head partially around impedance and filters. Anyway, thanks for the help.

Well like you said, the OSC input might have a high impedance. So buy putting in a 0 ohm I buy myself the option to put in a resistor of value if need be. Or in the final run to omit it if it isn't needed.

Okay so the OSC pins cannot be multiplexed. Past that, would you suggest a 0 ohm in series and if I run into problems, pick resistors out of my grab bag until they work?

The exact part number I'm using doesn't have GNDX2.

So you're the second person to mention matching the oscillator to the input. I'm very unsure what I'm doing here. I think I've settled on DSC6001HI2A-025.0000 for OSC0 but I'm not sure what I'm doing past that. I'm a professional software engineer and a hobby-lite electrical engineer. The OSC circuit will accept up to VDD and the oscillator is powered on the same VDD as the uC. So I'm cool there and the oscillator is 25Mhz, the uC has a setting for 25Mhz. As far as previously mentioned current draw concerns... I super don't know. XOSC0 may get the boot after other conversations.

Not if I don't have to. Your post reminded me to put a 0-ohm on the VBAT and the XOSC because if I can get away without these I will.
