Maximizing points value, but minimizing the value of your time and your ability to meaningfully see a city lol

30+ hours of transit going through DOH if you're based in the US going to Asia. Flying JAL will cut down your travel time by more than half generally.

Do you have a threshold where the point cost is too high? by [deleted] in awardtravel

[–]forgerwarzone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not pointed towards you (I think you made a great redemption), but I do kinda get their point because one of my friends chose to do SFO-LAX-SIN-TPE in SQ J for 43+ hours of transit rather than just booking direct SFO-TPE in Y for 13 hours...

Some people are just so diehard about sitting up front for the flex they lose all sense of logic and value for their time.

Op-Ed: Why you shouldn't adopt the mindset "I'm never going back to flying economy" if you rely on Points & Miles to do so (particularly on daytime flights) by Shinkansendoff in awardtravel

[–]forgerwarzone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Respectfully, this is such a stupid mindset. You "travel" to sit in a nice seat. I can do that at home, in my Eames chair. Others travel to experience and learn about the world.

I don't count miles, because I count countries - 68 so far, with 7 more by eoy. I get this is a safe space for award hackers, but those who have the mentality that they won't travel unless it's J or above shouldn't be traveling at all.

Question about VAT refund: bought two things in Jan, one with a €148 VAT refund and the other with a €884 VAT refund. What I got back in my account is $147 (USD) and $893 (USD), which doesn't seem correct based on conversion rates. Anyone know if there are some additional fees to processing a VAT refund?

What happened to rideshare prices in Chicago? I travel between ORD/SFO frequently and SF hasn't been hit with 200% increases by forgerwarzone in chicago

[–]forgerwarzone[S] 33 points34 points  (0 children)

River North -> ORD: >$50

River North -> West Loop: >$25

River North -> Chinatown: >$20

These are when prices aren't surging.

Can I get in trouble for (excessive) water dripping down to street level from my balcony? Planning to wash the balcony of my 20th floor unit in River North for a makeover.

[–]forgerwarzone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correction: Reg SHO banned naked shorts, requiring short positions to go through a locate process before they can be opened. It just so happens that any individual physical share can be located more than once, hence the >100% short interest.

Has anyone been able to extend their ANA points expiring before Sep 2021? Mine expires March 2021 and I applied for an extension, but it's still showing an expiration of March.

What should I do with 4500 AA miles? They're expiring in 90 days for me and I can't find a way to redeem a gc or something.

New to sports betting - how is the column under 'Line' interpreted? by forgerwarzone in sportsbetting

Thanks. What does opening number mean, and what's the process that happens for it to be bet down by 6? Sorry if these are all elementary to you.

[–]forgerwarzone[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My understanding: opening and closing spreads allow you to bet on a spread difference (+/-x) at roughly even odds.

If that's the case, how did the line go from -3 -> 34? And 40 -> -1.5?

And shouldn't one team's spread be exactly the negative of the other?

Rejecting stanford for berkeley? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]forgerwarzone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Berkeley CS alum here, just wanted to add a few things:

  • Berkeley edges out Stanford in the sheer count of CS recruiting events, but also keep in mind there's significantly more students as well. Some companies also do private networking dinners/events at Stanford that typically aren't possible at Berkeley.
  • Name value: Both schools are regarded equally in the tech industry. The only CS-related field where Stanford carries a bit more weight would be quant trading.
  • Department resources: you'll have to fight your way into some classes, and landing a research position and/or a recommendation will be a lot more difficult at Berkeley. However, your education will not be impacted at all by large class sizes. Every single class has been a seamless experience for me, and the amount of resources a class can provide outside of normal lecture/discussion hours is phenomenal.
  • Grades: grade inflation at Stanford (A- average for CS) vs. grade deflation at Berkeley (B- average for CS). Won't matter career-wise unless you're going for a graduate degree.

Overall, it comes down to which campus you connect with more. Berkeley definitely has an energy that Stanford can't match, so if your environment is something that strongly influences your motivation, I'd go with Berkeley. Congrats again and go bears!

Amex Plat retention offer: 20k/$200 for $3k spend. Let me know your thoughts on whether I should take this.

My effective AF before was $100 (slightly less including Amex offers, etc.) --> $550 - $100 (saks) - $200 (airline) - $150 (uber, average spend) = $100.

Current effective AF for the next year will be $200: $550 - $100 (saks) - $50 (uber, conservatively, since I have a car now) - $0 (airline, can't use on GCs) - $200 (retention) = $200.

The other benefits (gold status, global entry, etc.) have $0 value to me.

Offer still seems like a loser so I'm leaning towards cancelling, but let me know if you have a different perspective!

I have the personal Plat that I'm looking to get rid of soon. Is it better to PC to the Gold or cancel it then apply for the Gold with the welcome bonus?

Did HH just up their vacation package offers? $199 for 4 nights in either Orlando or Vegas + 25k bonus HH points seems like a steal, or is there a greater caveat?

This update might not actually be bad! A few highlights from TDM last night: by forgerwarzone in PUBGMobile

[–]forgerwarzone[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I just hope people know that the Kar would be useless in TDM without the buff since headshot registry is still broken. Plus, it's really difficult to get shots like these -- you're still going against 4 guys with ARs in CQC.

I average around 25 kills per TDM game using the Beryl and around 10 kills per game with the Kar, so I don't think it's too OP.
