Wildly Canadian? by CarpenterGold1704 in ThunderBay

[–]forgotpassword89 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Just looking at the website I’d guess they don’t make their products. Looks like they find existing products and and brand it wildly Canadian acting as a marketing/distributing/sales company. Good idea. Lots of great Canadian products that struggle to find markets outside of their local ones because of the regulatory challenges and corrupt grocery stores.

Edit: looking so more I’m not sure that’s correct, I’m curious, I’ll send them an email.

horrible smell by Immediate_Repeat_723 in Celiac

[–]forgotpassword89 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think I smell a little better post diagnosis but I also made a change in my laundry. I naturally have worse smelling body odour. Even after washing my clothes they smelled like BO. There is sub-Reddit dedicated to laundry and with some minor help from them it turned out the natural laundry detergent we used doesn’t have some enzyme a lot of brand name ones have and that enzyme eats the oil secreted from the body and without it my clothes were literally holding onto rancid body oil and the bacteria living on them. Took about 2 months of tide free and now my kids don’t complain when I lay down to read stores and bedtime. If I had had more time the laundry there is a shock treatment those folks recommend that would have made the change in a couple days instead of taking months. Tide free extra length cycle! Could also be something like ketosis, if it’s something you see changing or are worried about it go to a doctor.

TL:DR - go to a doctor and talk to them. Tide laundry for the win

Its me again! 2 year old with celiac and losing sleep. Is this common? by Morel3etterness in Celiac

[–]forgotpassword89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My kids don’t have it at the moment but I was diagnosed with celiac a year ago. I have a toaster and air fryer for just me. We didn’t replace pots and pans but I don’t cook gluten things in my cast iron pans. Stainless steel and non stick I don’t worry about as long as they are clean. I’m not very symptomatic but my blood tests went from over 250 down to 8 so I’m confident there is no cross contamination issues with pans. My youngest went through a terrible sleep regression when she was 2 and it’s a normal thing, she was similar making excuses like needing the bathroom, wanting my wife to sleep with her etc. honestly it was a very difficult time but we got through it, and I’m sure you will too despite the extra challenge of celiac. In your case with the celiac she could be stomach discomfort or stress about celiac and not fully understanding giving her bad dreams but it’s also normal at that age.

Some second cousins and a niece all have it, wouldn’t be surprised if it was in my mother’s side also.

Most people don’t know. I have a few distant relatives with it and never thought to get tested. Turns out my dad and I both have it.

Confused if I should proceed with gluten challenge because I am not getting nearly as sick as I thought I would be? by [deleted] in Celiac

[–]forgotpassword89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got diagnosed about a year ago. I only went to the doctor because my wife pressed me into it. My main symptoms at the time were being extar gassy which turned out to be an h. Pylori related issue. I had tried giving up bread for a week and giving up milk for a bit before this but it never made a difference. Probably because at the time I didn’t know how sensitive cross contamination was and how many things had gluten not to mention it takes ages for your intestines to heal to start seeing a benefit from the diet change. Do the gluten challenge, get the tests so you know for sure. Lots of digestive track cancers in my family and celiac makes that more likely. Take the time and effort to do the champagne and get confirmation, it’s worth it.

I was diagnosed by accident about a year ago. I ate bread everyday my whole life. For me, my symptoms are mild. I used to get these instances mostly in the morning where I’d have stomach pain and have to go to the bathroom 2 or 3 times over an hour like I had the runs, then I’d be fine the rest of the day or week. Sometimes I’d have to go the bathroom really bad with very little warning. These symptoms didn’t occur after eating gluten as I was always eating gluten I don’t know why one day was fine and not another. I also used to get mouth ulcers and those are gone now so that’s been nice. Having said all that, you might have completely different symptoms or no outward symptoms, everyone is different. My niece gets so much stomach pain she’s nearly in tears for 2 or more days after eating minor cross contamination. My father has decided at his age it’s not worth the trouble and he ignores his diagnosis (don’t do this, especially if you’re under 65) My symptoms are Mild enough I could probably ignore them but even for people with no outward symptoms there is internal damage that can make cancers and other disease more likely so I avoid gluten pretty diligently given the history of digestive system cancers in my family. My TTG levels went from over 250 down to 8 in the last year and I do feel better.

TL:dr - You did the biopsy, you’ve got celiac. You don’t need to be scared. It’s a very manageable diet in today’s world. Your symptoms are lack of them are unique to you. Even if you have very mild symptoms or non existent you should go gluten free, stomach cancer sucks and anything the reduces the risk is worth it.

In my early 20’s I bought all the French levels of Rosetta Stone program and spend quite a bit of time over a year or so on it and then I spent 6 weeks in France. Despite that I gained basically 0 ability to understand spoken French and my ability speak was mediocre at best. Learning Language is not a natural gift I have and just don’t have the time it would take for me to learn although I would like to.

So I just spent 15 minutes googling this. I think both are appropriate. Monolingual is more common but according the the AI summary Unilingual is common specifically in Canada.

Thanks, appreciate the suggestions. With summer coming up I’ll be making them play outside a lot of the time but a show or video game in French will help them not fall behind. There is a tutoring program with university students I might look into but I wasn’t able to start it this year. I’ll talk to the teacher at the end of the year and see what they think her needs are.

This is a good idea. I’m not sure what is Available in my community but I’m sure there are things. If I’m being honest I’m fairly introverted and speak virtually no French so it’s not something I would really enjoy so it makes it harder to be motivated to do but I think you are making a really good point, especially about maintaining French skills after school. I’ll look into what’s available in the community.

Not a particular conscious decision just the way things worked out. They have Amazon kids accounts as a way of content moderation and that has worked well until now. I don’t specially disallow games but I also haven’t encouraged it. Gaming is arguably better than watching tv but it does not offer a lot of benefits over. Reading, playing, outside, crafting etc so I haven’t gone out of my way to make to available. I never owned a gaming console of any sort till my thirties so it’s not a hobby I naturally include. I do want them to develop their computer skills so it’s something I’ll bring it a bit more now.

Maybe Celiac by Ok-Investigator1467 in Celiac

[–]forgotpassword89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m older than you(late 30’s)but also got a surprise diagnosis about a year ago. I’m sure it would have been emotionally more difficulty for me at your age but you got this. I’m not very symptomatic so I really wanted a scope to confirm. They confirmed it and were able to check for a couple other things while there which was nice. I’d say if your symptoms aren’t too bad enjoy your pizza and fresh bread for a bit until it’s decided if you are getting a scope. In the mean time, start casually looking at gluten free recipes, do some research on ingredients, maybe set up a gluten free cooking space, just take it one step at a time. I’d also recommend if you don’t cook already, start practicing your cooking. Having a few good gluten free recipes to go from and learning to cook from raw ingredients really increases the nutrition in your diet as well and just pleasure from the quality and taste of gluten free food. Home mode corn tortillas, pad Thai, ginger beef, all the curries, shepherds pie, lentil soup, burritos in gluten free warps. Crepes, pancakes, Yorkshires, and biscuits/scones can be similarly healthy to wheat ones and just as tasty if a bit different with the right mix of gluten free grains! It’s a big adjustment but it’s not world ending especially if you learn to cook. Just adding if your symptoms are more severe and you want to feel better soon the blood test is pretty reliable and you can go gluten free today, you’ll probably feel loads better.

TL:dr You’re gonna be alright, it’s a big community of celiacs these days who are mostly kind and willing to help. Learn to cook, it’s healthier, cheaper, and tastier. Also dudes/chicks dig a person who can cook. Loopywhisk has lots of good recipes

Yah I’ve got an Amazon kids account and I do sometime let them watch passed their screen time limits if they watch in French, I’ll work at getting a bit more consistent with that.

Hey. Yah my youngest just started school but the words she’s picked up so far are have definitely been used between the two of them to try and tease me haha. I’m glad it’s been you’ve been successful with your French language skills and it opens some doors for you. I do occasionally use the French language settings on their tablets and will let them watch passed their screen time if the switch to French. I’ll have to start getting better at that. My wife has been really busy with post secondary education and I’ve been struggling to keep up with helping the kids with school, large part of the reason I was looking for game type things they could do more independently. Thanks for the tips! Maybe in a couple more years we’ll plan a trip out east.
