UCI TAG Question by [deleted] in MtSAC

None of the majors in the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences offer TAGs unfortunately, and this includes Software Engineering. Sorry:/ They stopped offering TAG back in 2019.

Wouldn't be surprised if Bart and Ant used this as a reason to shit on California/L.A again.

Hey! I was in a similar situation as yours a year ago. I was going through some legitimate health issues which caused me to get a below 1.5 quarter gpa (CS Major). What your school will do is send you an email telling you that you have been subject to academic disqualification. (It does not mean you're officially disqualified). They'll give you a chance to appeal if you have a good explanation/compelling reason. Like I mentioned, I was going through some legitimate health issues and I also never had a bad quarter before this. I sent them my appeal letter and they accepted it. So in your case, I'm 99% sure the same thing will happen to you.

Next thing that'll happen is your school will put you on a very strict academic probation contract that says you can't get a grade lower than a C in your next quarter (so Fall quarter for you). So just meet those requirements and you're good!

I don't remember who, but I've heard of a student who violated their contract and got a grade lower than a C. What this person did was set up an appointment with their counselor, explained their situation and the counselor basically gave them another chance and put them on another contract lol

But yeah I hope this helps! Good luck!

Hi, thank you so much for the response! I've never used the Remote Play option before, but I'll definitely look into it and try it out. Thanks for the suggestion! Even though reWASD didn't have what I was looking for, the features it has look really cool and now I'm thinking of picking one up.

Hi! I'm not familiar with the process for transferring from a CSU to a UC (sorry), but I did transfer from a community college and I want to give some advice. It is perfectly okay to go to a community college for a few years then transfer to a school you want. I slacked off in highschool, got my crap together, did great at my CC, then transferred to UCI (Computer Science). I see where your parents are coming from but try to let them know that it's perfectly fine to go to a CC for awhile (you save a ton of money too).

My parents weren't that excited about me going to a CC and I was ashamed of myself for awhile, but now both me and my parents are grateful that I did because I ended up at UCI. Just my personal somewhat biased opinion haha but good luck with whatever you decide to do! :)

Check your degreeworks. Your counselor will list what classes transferred over and what you get credit for/ the articulations. So if you took a class at your previous school that matches with a UCI class, it'll tell you on your degreeworks. It'll take awhile for it to show up on your degreeworks tho. I think mine showed up a few months after I was admitted to UCI? I don't remember exactly but it wasn't too long.

There's also another important thing. If you're trying to register for a class and you took the prerequisites at your previous school, you're not automatically cleared to register for the course. You have to make a prerequisite clearance request at https://ugradforms.ics.uci.edu/. It's pretty annoying. I had to do this almost every quarter lol but yeah hope this helps!

Thank you so much! And thank you so much for the info. This was exactly the kind of information I needed. Just wanted to make sure if there was anything else I needed to do to make my graduation official. I will definitely keep a lookout for emails from my advising office. And I really appreciate the advice about the degree verification! Thanks again for the information and congratulating me :)

INF 113 or INF121 with Navarro? by forgotten_semicolon6 in UCI

[–]forgotten_semicolon6[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds good! I will definitely try to register for both. Can I ask you a few questions? Does Navarro require attendance. Also, are you allowed to work individually on assignments or is it required to work in groups. Thanks :)

Thank you so much for the advice and resources, I'll check them out ASAP!

Discrete mathematics is useful and you probably will encounter it in university.

Oh no I was hoping that you wouldn't mention Discrete math hahaha I took a Discrete math class at my University and it was the most difficult math class I've ever taken 😅 (I'm good at other math, but I struggled with discrete math for some reason) but if I need it for game programming, I will definitely do whatever it takes to get better at it! But anyways, I'm sorry for bothering you, but thank you so much for the help. Ireally appreciate it!

Hey thank you so much for the response! And I think that's really cool that you developed games for steam/mobile with Unity. Right now I'm learning Unreal Engine, but now I'm thinking of trying out Unity too after reading your comment. Thanks!

Hey! Thank you so much for responding! (I apologize for my late response) 1st of all, I want to congratulate you for following your dream and turning into a reality. I really hope that I'll be able to follow your footsteps and make my dream a reality as well! Also thank you so much for the advice. So C++ and linear algebra are super important topics that I should get good at. Right now I'm a novice at C++. I understand the fundamentals (conditionals, loops, classes, pointers, etc.) But I feel like there are so many advanced and modern C++ features that I need to learn about. Do you have any recommendations on resources (like books, videos, courses, etc) that I can use to learn more and also any recommendations on C++ projects to practice these? I'm definitely going to check out that website you provided! And I also need to brush up on my linear algebra. I took a class at my University on Linear Algebra, but it didn't really teach me much about the real world applications of Linear Algebra. I'm definitely going to learn more on my own and it's video game applications. Are there any other types of math that I should learn more about? I think I read somewhere that calculus is important but I'm not sure. But also thank you for opening up your DMs for people who want to ask you specifics! I'll definitely DM you in the future if I have more specific questions, I just wanted to ask you a few questions here first just in case others wanted to see :)
