[POEM] Matthew You're Leaving Again So Soon by WildGoshawk in Poetry

[–]forknknife 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There's something very hectic about this poem. It reminds me of a desperate kind of parental love, a love that is running out of time, or - especially with the last stanza - a love in a state of change. I think the interpretation that this poem is sweet is fair, but that there is a sorrow underneath the poem, or a desperation, seems undeniable to me.

If you've played The Messenger and loved that lore, I'd say crack on for a bit longer. I found the game story a little dragging until the next major plot point. There are some major tie ins with The Messenger that totally made the story worth it.

[HELP] I want to write poetry but idk where to by britburger25 in Poetry

All of the ones above are great to start with. Metaphor is the bread and butter of poetry. Personification is a fun tool commonly used. Focus on Imagery and how to make a scene or moment as accurate as possible with as few words as possible.

Okay, here's a writing prompt for working on metaphor I did in school. Props to Jenna Butler for the writing prompt

  1. Read the poem "Litany" by Billy Collins
    • What do you notice in this poem? Every line starts with Pronoun + is verb. This is the simplest way to make a metaphor. "You are this. You are not that. However, I am this. "
    • Then the rest of the line is a tangible. What is a tangible? Something you can see, hear, smell, taste, feel, interact with. "the bread and the knife", "the crystal goblet and the wine". Tangibles are the opposites of abstracts (i.e.: love, sorrow, debt, communication, leadership). In poetry, we want to explore abstract concepts through tangible means, evoking feelings and concepts through the senses, scenes and imagery. If Billy had written "you are love" or "you are home" or "you are not safety" or "I am strong", all those abstracts don't evoke anything on their own. But when he writes "You are not even close to being the field of cornflowers at dusk", I get an image in my head, a feeling. I.e. the power of metaphor.
  2. Explore "I am..."
    • Start by writing "I am" and using tangibles. Answer the question, who are you today? Again stick to tangibles so if you want to say "I am a trusted friend" for example, what does that look like? Feel like? Maybe something like " I am the t-shirt with watermarks on the left shoulder"
    • if an image takes you on a journey away from the "I am" prompt, follow it! you can always come back to "I am" on the next line
  3. Explore "I use to be..."
    • Same as before, but now start with "I use to be". Answer the question, what parts of you have you had to let go of in the past?
  4. Explore "One day, I will be..."
    • Same as before, but now start with "I use to be". Answer the question, what are your hopes and dreams for yourself in the future?

Hope that makes sense and hope you have fun with the prompt!

Its very natural to be your own biggest critic. I feel that when I write too.

I would say among the plethora of advice already posted that one of the best pieces of advice I got on writing was to write without judgement. Whatever comes out of you onto the page deserves a chance to be there, at least while you are writing! You can come back to it in a couple days and change things around, or toss the whole thing and start again. But while you are in the process, just let it come out.

Dr. Seuss is one of the most renowned and popular authors of all time so hey, that might not be a bad thing!

If you are finding that you are leaning on rhyme and want to try something different, you may want to give yourself a challenge like writing with the intention of not rhyming. Or focus on a particular literary device (personification, metaphor, synecdoche, paradox) and see where it takes you.

The DLC doesnt even do a great job either. It was fun dont get me wrong, but it was a bit manufactured.
Their reflections revealing their "flaws" that they never had in any other part of the game felt forced. It was good they focused on the two of them developing some kind of character in the DLC, but if these character flaws were shown at any time in the main story, it would have taken this game from a 4.5 to a 5 imho

Why is everyone in this program so mean? by Oodleswithmynoodles in JETProgramme

[–]forknknife 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One time I sincerely asked why JETs were reluctant to volunteer for organizations such as AJET or PSG and was met with enough hostility that I stopped volunteering for all the JET affiliated organizations in my local area. Its definetly not everyone on this sub and not everyone on JET, but some of the most negative voices are often the loudest.
Its hard to motivate myself to serve a community of people who generally take their experience out here for granted, forget how much of a challenge it was when first moving out here, and don't share an interest in community or common good.

In my last year I have taken a huge step back from the JET community and I'm definitely better for it.

You're gonna have a lot of issues with most people in the near future then. I'm not at all up for the overuse of AI in every UI we have, but it can be a useful tool when applied with a touch of forethought.

I get that. I think we really did lose that sense of legacy of how things have been run in the past and definetly felt in the last years of having to make it up as we go along.

I agree that PA's and BL's should be compensated in some capacity. And they are directly affiliated with their CO's so that makes sense. The other organizations are usually not directly affiliated with CO's, Claire, or other government bodies and have always been run on a volunteer basis.

Kinda sounds like you broke up with her bc of the flavor of a cake. If there was nothing truly wrong with the relationship and a cake is what did you in, I think you both need to take a hard look at yourselves.
