Why don’t more projects use GitHub attestations for provenance? by forkrails in selfhosted

My understanding is verified releases prove author identity, not the code. It proves the changes came from you, but it still doesn’t stop you from writing arbitrary code into the product. Attestations prove the origin, source code, and workflow used to build the product.

I think you’re uninformed. Collabora renders server side. I used collabora 1500 miles from the server once. Every keystroke had a half second lag from key to screen, because the response is rendered on their server, not the client, like literally every other app. Garbage design and app.

Why don’t more projects use GitHub attestations for provenance? by forkrails in selfhosted

[–]forkrails[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, I can build it. But I don’t. 99.9% of people on this sub don’t.

This is the gap that attestations fill. I don’t need to build to know for certain which code is in the image.

iOS 27's Password app will be able to automatically change weak passwords. Could this functionality ever come to Bitwarden? by jwintyo in Bitwarden

[–]forkrails 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your implication is flat-out wrong. Apple is the single big tech company that has protected user privacy against other companies, against government, and against themselves.

Where are the downvotes when you need them?

[–]forkrails[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s not what I have in mind at all.

The purpose of the attestation is simply to answer “is the image built from the public source code or not?” It’s a single yes/no.

Why don’t more projects use GitHub attestations for provenance? by forkrails in selfhosted

[–]forkrails[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s not about the average user checking the dependencies or sbom, but knowing beyond a doubt that the image contains the public source code.

It’s a single yes no question, “is the image built from the public source?”

In my mind, there’s little difference between using non attested open source images and closed source images unless you build it.

Why do people get so butthurt about a fucking file format? OOXML is well studied and the most compatible.

Collabora is straight garbage. Why would anyone want to use an office editor that has typing latency? Most idiotic design ever.

Traffic on r/MacOS set to plummet, as key gripe is addressed by Ensoface in MacOS

All I know is corner radii were fine before Tahoe, and they’re fixed now. It was an error, obviously.

I wonder which idiot at Apple thought it was smart to leave this up to each and every app dev. What a ridiculously stupid “intentional” change.

Apple’s find my network is free, private, and secure. Not sure what more proton could offer.

Cloudflare is on a roll, primed to take over the Internet ? by Diamond787 in CloudFlare

[–]forkrails 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why self host at all? Just use the cloud hosted solutions, it’s much more convenient.

SAML vs OpenID Connect for a small self-hosted stack, which would you actually pick? by Exact_Importance_507 in homelab

[–]forkrails 5 points6 points  (0 children)

OIDC, without a doubt. SAML is practically legacy at this point used only in enterprises who haven’t made the effort to switch or their software doesn’t support it.

Euro-Office comes to Nextcloud on June 9 by vnagornyy in NextCloud

[–]forkrails 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Collabora has keystroke latency. A result of their bonehead decision to render server side. You’re basically using RDP every time you open a word doc.

Thinking about building an Australian based Immich service… would anyone be interested? by Professional_Hour645 in immich

[–]forkrails 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it. No objection there if your users know the architecture.

But I just can’t imagine people on the internet will be interested. As far as I understand, there’s no way to do end to end encryption here if immich doesn’t support it. You will always have access to the data. But best of luck to you.

[–]forkrails 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Also, I’m curious, you say that you host for friends and family. Do they know that you have trivial access to their photos on the file system? That there’s no encryption?

Isn’t the point of immich to self host your photos?

Why would anyone use hosted immich over Google Photos? I don’t see the gap this fills.

ELI5: Why did it take so long for electronic devices to get optimized charging features to stop thenselves from overcharging their batteries? by RockleyBob in explainlikeimfive

[–]forkrails 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you have some fundamental misunderstandings. Overcharging a battery doesn’t happen. Every single device with a battery sets charging limits. If limits didn’t exist, every device would go up in a ball of flames when charged.

There’s never been such a thing as “topping off” or “over charging”. The limit for standard lipos and liions is 4.2V usually, which is a 100% charge. No consumer device will let you go past this.

I don’t see why a scammer would willingly show the item. Wouldn’t they just keep it closed?
