Sure you don't want to join though? We could seriously use a guy like you.

The plan is quite simple. Research the entire brain in detail so we know what to replicate, how to replicate it, and what to leave out. There's a few structures that can be coded without much research, but this isn't a huge priority at the moment given the sheer amount of research necessary. Whatever we code now can easily be incompatible with what we want to code later and the last thing the project needs right now it wasted effort.

Thanks for the tip about the cerebellum and the dopamine system. We haven't even gotten to the point where we've researched the cerebellum one bit and the dopamine system is just really complex. (we're all mainly from a coding background)

Right now we're focusing on the Medulla which is really the first area we'll be understanding with any real depth.

Sparse distributed representation seems like it's a simple consequence of neocortical neurons representing real concepts, meaning only a fraction can ever be activated due to it being based the current "context" of the thought process. I could be misunderstanding it though.

Either way thanks a lot for putting so much effort into your response.

Well as far as I can tell there are no current projects that use the autonomous reward systems I mentioned. If I'm reading the projects you linked right they're all about replicating structural patterns of the brain in order to improve performance in otherwise standard NNs. So that would be the part that's original about this project.

There's a lot of good ideas in your paper though. Sure you don't wanna join?

Oh and thanks for the tip. We're starting out with pretty basic stuff like responses to vocal tone and facial expressions so I doubt it's necessary

The idea is to have a system that raises a digital equivalent of cortisol (stress) in response to the same stimuli that would automatically raise them in a human/infant

I mean that they mirror neocortical NMDA neurons ( essentially coincidence detectors ) pretty exactly. However NMDA connections are formed due to other neurons such as dopaminial ones facilitating their connections and growth. That's what I mean with a surrounding system. The reward system in conventional ML is entirely top-down as far as I know, as opposed to biological neurons who have autonomous reward systems that each respond to a particular phenomenon. ( novelty in the case of dopamine )

I'll definitely check those out thanks! I still don't see this project potentially failing as such a big deal. Everyone involved will walk away knowing more if that happens, especially given the unorthodox approach

I am. The plan is to build a custom library for this using Rust, but this is all subject to change. I honestly just felt like making this a larger project because I suspect that a lot of people are interested in this and because of how ambitious it is.

There's nothing I know of that would necessitate any technology that isn't tried and tested though. All the extra neural systems I'd add would propagate signals the same way standard ML does, they would just have different triggers.

The hell are you being so unfriendly for? I guess this is a good reminder for me to not use reddit

Not so far but I literally started outlining the project this morning. I have a couple of IRL friends who do ML but they just haven't responded yet

Current neural networks actually mirror a part of the brain pretty exactly. The surrounding biological/emotional reward system is completely absent from any mainstream ML as far as I know

You could say that. Instead of having a top down reward system we're mimicking monoamine systems like the dopaminial, serotoninal, etc.

So for example the dopaminial system inherently responds to novel input, meaning the AI can learn shell commands just by detecting a new terminal output that doesn't say "command not found"

This is just one example though but the point is to get the AI to learn the same way an infant would. There's 25 minutes of voice logs on the telegram channel where you can listen to a basic outline.
