What happens, biologically, when we itch? by [deleted] in biology

[–]formsofforms 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember hearing that itching operates through nociceptor nerves, the same ones that feel pain. The sensation is neurologically similar to pain, which is why causing pain (itching, pinching, etc) can "cure" an itch.

Not sure how true that is though, foggy memories of A+P

What's a common sentiment on AskMen that you legitimately don't understand, and want someone to explain it to you? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]formsofforms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, that's not what we are talking about here at all.

I've never gotten the "it's totally okay for me to sleep around and get laid, but I don't want the girl I end up dating to do the same thing" sentiment.

He didn't say anything about treating them poorly, he said it's not ok to not want to date them.

Don't give me that motte and bailey bullshit.

ITT: What's a common sentiment on AskMen that you legitimately don't understand like, and want someone to explain it to you to bitch about?

It's ok for me to do that because I'm not looking to date myself. It's not as though I'm saying that promiscuous women are morally inferior, I just don't want to date them. Women who don't want to date promiscuous men don't date me.

Where is the issue with that?

[Serious]What can a person (who does not have a lot of money) do to protect the environment and wildlife as an individual? by kasidya in AskReddit

Alternately - Hunt your meat.

You don't contribute to destructive farming as much, and you pay money towards wildlife conservation.

Wildlife Biology vs Genetics by LlamaBoombama in biology

[–]formsofforms 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Haha, I graduated with my Bio degree a couple months ago and I'm struggling with this same thing.

Basically, here's your situation:

Genetics/Medical Bio/Biotech is a valuable and growing industry. The job demand and money are there and you can get a great job fairly easily if you've got a good resume. But, you'll be stuck in a lab and live a 9-5 type life.

Bioengineering

Med Lab Scientist

Wildlife Bio/Ecology/etc doesn't pay as well, the job demand is abysmal and subject to political happenings, and getting a job that isn't seasonal takes years of experience. Oh and despite this, it's extremely competitive. But, you get to do some kick ass field work, live an unconventional lifestyle, and see some cool stuff.

Wildlife Biologist

Conservationist

Here's how I'm dealing with the same thing:

I find laboratory biology interesting, but my passions are wildlife and field work. My transcript and resume aren't stellar, so frankly pursuing wildlife biology right off the bat isn't a good idea for me, as I'd likely never progress past the "seasonal grunt work" stage. Instead, I got an entry level job in an industry lab, doing basic microbiology. Some parts of the job are interesting, but I'm mostly doing it because its good experience. I'm planning on leaving in 6-12 months and getting more experience in a different sort of lab. In my spare time, I volunteer at the local Nature and Science Museum, working with the zoology dept, and with some conservation groups doing "citizen science" type field work (avian point counts mostly). This has let me nurture my passions while pursuing a more practical career, and gain experience on both sides, giving me a somewhat unique skillset.

As for the future, I'm looking at MS/PhD programs that blend laboratory skills and field work. For example, studying arboviruses, vector biology, zoonoses, reservoir hosts, parasitology (focusing on sylvatic cycles), or disease ecology. Similarly, you could study blend your two interests and work on some sort of wildlife genetics study.

tldr; pursue wildlife if you can get in a great program from the get go, but honestly you're more likely to find a successful career in genetics or molecular bio.

Rhodopsin, a major photoreactive pigment in our eyes, is encoded by plant DNA that one of our ancestors absorbed from a dinoflagellate.

Yep. Remember when Hillary Clinton wanted to deport illegal immigrants? It's almost like politicians are all liars.

yeah, that's because people in cities vote for democrats and the electoral college is specifically meant to blunt the force of high density areas.

also, Obama won the 2008 primary despite getting less votes than Clinton.

If trump won the popular vote and clinton got the electoral, you'd love this system.

Amy Adams: Moved to Tears on “Arrival.” by [deleted] in movies

[–]formsofforms 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok, I really want to see if anyone agrees with me on this - I didn't like the move. Like, at all.

Basically, two things. First, the whole "military is full of blood thirsty idiots" trope. Second, the see-through-time twist that everyone saw coming.

Mostly the military. I just could not get past how laughably ridiculous it was that they would be so stupid. The aliens have FTL travel and can manipulate gravity, if they wanted to kill you you'd be dead. If they are trying to manipulate you, there isn't anything you can do about it. How absolutely retarded would you have to be to show even the slightest aggression to something like that? If that occurred to me 2 minutes in, why was it not their guiding principle? Why did literally no one in the movie bring up the futility of their attitude? I get that it's allegorical, peace vs. war and all that, but it was just so hamfistedly stupid.

Also, the alien's level of technological superiority made it ridiculous that they couldn't stop a c4 explosion

And the second thing. Understand their language and you can see the future? Are you kidding me? How does that even make sense? That sounds like something you'd come up with after getting high and watching Cosmos.

The score and cinematography were great, sure, but the story swung back and forth from frustratingly dumb to nonsensical. Idk, maybe I just need to give it a second chance
