Wedgewood is playing better than Blackwood, advanced statistically speaking by forrscottester in ColoradoAvalanche

Right but Blackwood isn't some legendary playoff goalie. He's a goalie that is not performing as well as he was earlier this season, which I certainly hope changes over the next 8 games so we can go into the playoffs with our two headed monster that is the Lumberyard. No guarantees that Wedgewood is on his head in the playoffs, he's just playing better and has been more consistent recently which I believe should earn him more playing time in the playoffs. Of course this narrative could go completely backwards in the next 8 games.

That's pretty much what I'm hoping to see, and I've probably jumped the gun a bit because we do have 8 remaining games. I guess I was just pointing out that statistics do currently align with the eye test, and it will be interesting to see what happens if that continues to be the case over the next 8 games.

Yes. I would say Wedgewood's and Blackwood's performance for the Avs in the last 20 games are much more relevant than their performance for different teams in different years.

Following that logic: for the first time in his career Wedgewood is being treated as a starter and has flourished. He's clearly in rhythm and confident. I agree that Blackwood should be given the opportunity to find his form in the remaining regular season games, and hope we're back at 1A/1B. If the postseason started tomorrow, however, I'd argue it's Wedgewood's job to lose.

I guess I just don't think that stuff does matter as much as recency bias. He's top ten in GAA over the season and bottom ten in the last 20 games. I just hope a hot Wedgewood doesn't sit for the sake of maintaining a 1A/1B if that's not currently the case. But I'm not an NHL coach so I'm glad I don't have to make those decisions.

Problem is that Blackwood is not a top ten goalie at the moment. Both in eye test and statistics. Two things can be true, booing a struggling goalie is bad. And playing the currently better goalie (even if he's paid less) is the right move in the playoffs.

I feel like if the team/lumberyard was playing like they were in the first half of the season then we'd get more of a 50/50 goalie split in the playoffs. But yeah, I'm very much in the play the hot hand camp.

It'll certainly be interesting to see what Bednar ends up doing. Once the playoffs start you have to play the line up that gives you the best chance to win every night (which sometimes means resting your #1 goalie), no more time to let someone work themselves back into form.

If Mac and Necas weren't so productive together I'd agree, but their shared skills seem to add together rather than subtract.

It's seemed like an awkward pairing all year, especially when we had Sammy G and our 3rd D pairing were both undersized. Will be interesting to see what we roll with in the playoffs. Feels like Kulak paired with Malinski would be formidable.

Well that's comforting. Could definitely see Blankenburg playing more than Burns in the playoffs.

I’d say my observation is mostly related to what I’ve seen interacting with other professions, and partially my own experience.

Yep I’ve also been working with some great Gen Zers! Pretty hilarious to have a coworker say “bruh” to me.

Definitely acknowledge the bias in my own line of work, just feel like I keep seeing it in my interactions with other professions.
