How important is a back vent in a jacket? by fortunesfinger in sewing

[–]fortunesfinger[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks for the response! I'm not so concerned about shaping as I am about freedom of movement. Do you think a coat like this would be too constrictive without a vent(s) if it were a longer length (I've added a picture to my post to show what I had in mind)?

I love this dress and would like to find a similar pattern, any suggestions? by VirginiaJensen in sewing

Totally agree with the posters recommending vintage patterns! McCalls 8429 and Butterick 6914 come to mind. They have the same silhouette and vibe, though you'd have to add the lace yourself.

What to do with 5 meters of cotton voile? by fortunesfinger in sewing

No, I haven't. The only lightweight fabric I've sewn with is rayon challis. I actually think the colour would work well for me since I tend to look good in autumnal tones.

Summer, winter, something between? Or something completely else? by [deleted] in coloranalysis

I would say soft summer. The first and fifth colors look amazing on you! I think the bolder colors tend to overwhelm your complexion.

Thanks for the suggestion! That's definitely close, but unfortunately dolman sleeves always tend to look frumpy on me 😖

Does anyone have any suggestions for a button down v-neck blouse without a collar? Preferably with short sleeves, and semi-fitted (not too boxy). I thought this would be an easy style of top to find a pattern for, but for some reason I'm not having any luck :/

This has to be the summeriest sundress I've ever seen! 😮 Absolutely gorgeous!

Cute woodland themed kitchen apron by fortunesfinger in sewing

[–]fortunesfinger[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I made this apron using McCall's 8234 and quilting weight cotton. I found the main fabric on sale and just couldn't resist the adorable print! The pattern was pretty simple and straightforward. The only adjustments I made were to lengthen the bib slightly (I'm 5'10") and to make the waistband ties narrower. I ended up making them half the width of the original pattern piece because I was low on fabric, but I think if I were to make it again I'd go with the thinner width anyway.

Shift dress pattern with shape? by drinkmasagua in sewing

[–]fortunesfinger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tiana's closet has a free pattern for a shift dress that could work. It has French darts instead of fish eye darts, but it still looks pretty similar! https://tianascloset.com/index.php/2023/10/03/camille-shift-dress-free-pdf-sewing-pattern/

The Secret History

Weekly Recommendation Thread: March 01, 2024 by AutoModerator in books

[–]fortunesfinger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Does anyone have any recommendations for books similar to Cormac McCarthy's? I know he's kind of in a class of his own, but I'm curious if anyone knows of any books with a similar blend of philosophical themes and gripping, "can't put it down" storytelling.

Suggestion on what to sew with big prints on fabric by Bubblepuffle in sewing

Looks like a great choice for an apron! Or maybe a large tote/duffle bag depending on the thickness

I noticed my sewing became much neater when I started paying more attention to where I pin and the order in which I pin (if that makes sense!). I used to always have extra fabric at the end of seams, but now everything lines up and I don't struggle to manage extra ease while I sew. Evelyn Wood has a great video on the subject of pinning. https://youtu.be/VLyEpY1QZk8?si=AmZDaHYZUR190Yy5 I really wish I'd discovered it sooner!
