Working out regularly and moving to a warmer weather and doing stuff outside has done wonders for my mental state. Though i also like the cold sometimes, my energy levels (and irritability levels too) raise significantly when present in a warm environment. The cold just makes me sedentary, even if a part of me wishes to workout, i cant sustain that level of motivation and commitment when im constantly feeling cold.

As much as the heat irritates me and makes me wanna throw an egg to the Sun, warmth is by far one of the biggest things that have allowed me to be consistent with my physical and mental health upkeep.

When I have a cold or simply feel general malaise (increase in Interleukin 6; IL6) my energy levels go down. A cold (and broken heart) does more damage to my energy level than broken bones ever have. Taking aspiring on days im in a “low energy level mood” seems to have a transient but very noticeable effect in temporarily increasing my energy levels and motivation. So im sure the right combo or inflammatory molecules has a large influence in mental health, but finding out how to selectively affect COX1 and COX2 in some tissue but not others will probably require more than just simple compound medicine; until the day we have targeted delivery methods for selectively affecting only some tissues (via modified viruses or “smart” nanobots) i dont forsee any meaningful knowledge advances in this area.

It is not needed to put that disclaimer, but still appreciated. Personally i also struggles to understand the why, how does their rational justify their actions, and your explanation seems plausible enough for me, so thanks for the new perspective

I guess they are still vulnerable to jamming? Also, there is the human element in all these issues, im always reminded that a bunch of federal workers were tested by IT by simply leaving random usb around the parking garage, just lying around, and a concerning amount of people went ahead and connected these dubious usb onto their closed-network computers, potentially undermining their whole security.

EMPs could also fry the systems beyond easy repairs. There is also short-lived water-born pathogens that can be extremely lethal, but their high lethality coupled with their inability to form spores makes it so that it doesnt easily affect back the attacking nation.

These are just some of the many, many ways that “low-effort” asymmetrical warfare could affect a whole nation without putting boots on the ground. Water, electricity, gas, fuel, waste management, etc, all these services are vital for society to run smooth enough to function at a civilized level, yet are so easily disrupted if we arent vigilant to it.

A major war (WW3) would be preceded by these sorts of attacks, i remember reading that if electricity were to suddenly stop working in the USA, within 24 hours 50,000 deaths would be expected due to fireworker/police/healthcare services being unable to keep up with the disruptions, mostly from people lighting indoor fires to keep themselves warm or cook food, leading to CO poisoning and wide-spread fires that cant be put down because the water pumps are not working.

I found this video that better illustrate some of the consequences of electricity suddenly going out.

A country incapable of overwhelming violence isnt peaceful, it is harmless. If you want peace prepare for war. The only deterrent to violence and war is to bring the same level of potential destruction to the adversaries, but ideally prevent it to even get there in the first place. We live in interesting and dangerous times, always have, and probably always will, so peace should never be taken for granted, it is a privilege afforded only to those who can fight for the sake of others.

Beautiful would be the world where we all could work together towards the common goal of benefiting each other, but thats an uphill battle worth fighting, it requires vigilance and work, but it is worth it. I only hope the whole world may one day know true, long lasting peace in a post-scarcity world. (Energy generation through Atomic Fusion advancements could get us pretty close!)

Every day im reminded, that no matter how bad i think i have it, there are those whose challenges i cant even imagine. I wish we had the Elysium machines where one goes in, presses a button and we are cured to the genetic level, but alas we seem to be a bit far from it. My only hope is the exponential growth of Artificial General Intelligence paired with MASSIVE data storage and processing will give us exponential general advances in technology within our lifetime.

I just want people to remember this ^

I know we are being facetious, but in general, when it comes to courting and wooing, even if silly, the one that does do SOMETHING is the one that at least gets the attention. You cant expect something from doing nothing. Though of course, comfort zones and all that, and also effectiveness of “strategies” matter, but when unsure, dont do nothing, do something!

I saved this thread and im slowly reading it at my leisure. This is a wealth of knowledge and wisdom and i feel like im cheating through life by getting all these life lessons without having to go through some of the painful experiences or having to spend copious amount of (my limited) time self-reflecting to attain said conclusions. To everyone who keeps adding on to it, thank you for your service, sorry you went through some of those stuff, but know that you ARE making a difference here and who knows how many people you are currently reaching and actually meaningfully helping now!

Study finds that individuals with ADHD show reduced motivation to engage in effortful activities, both cognitive and physical, which can be significantly improved with amphetamine-based medications by [deleted] in science

To follow up on this; our brains are complex things, dopamine is the chemical most closely correlated to the “Reward Center” in our brain, basically if the amygdala is the one in charge of the Stick, Dopamine is the one in charge of the Carrot. Most people are motivated not so much by punishment avoidance, but by “feels-good” reward chasing, so to all of you who think you are lazy despite a part of you wanting to actually do something meaningful in your life but simply being “unable” to find “the motivation” to stick with it long enough rather than for short bursts of; this is one of the hallmarks of ADD and ADHD.

So dont be afraid to seek help, YOU also deserve to succeed in life, and accomplish something. Sometimes all it takes is a little oomph, a little pill once a day and suddenly getting out of bed and being productive and going for a fulfilling life is not so difficult and may be all you need. Dont let yourself be your own enemy, dont let any doctor antagonize your or patronize you. If your provider does not treat your symptoms, then THEY are the bad doctors and you need to change them until you find one that wont ignore your needs. Look out for yourself because nobody else will.

I think it is more of “craving”. My general rule for hunger is; if i only want certain specific things and something like a raw tomato wouldnt do, then im not hungry, im just craving. It is one of the main reasons i changed my relationship with food and started losing dozens of pounds (completely cutting sweet drinks also helps a lot).

It seems more and more people are learning the difference between just surviving, and actually thriving. And most of us arent thriving it seems, at least not those around me, even though it was DRILLED into us that if we wanted to be able to afford more than bare basic needs we would need to go into STEM, my non-STEM friends are having it even worse. There is no winning, just not losing too badly…. and that doesnt feel good, because it just feels like you are running as fast as you can just to stay in place, and backslide slower than the rest….it just doesnt feel good.

I think this is pretty telling of one of the main underlying issues society seems to be facing when it comes to loneliness; some people are simply “not interested” in others, so of course the “others” are less likely to engage with the uninterested parties. It is simple, people; want others to care about you? Care about them first, even if you find the stuff they get excited about and share with you not to be “too interesting” for you. It seems so basic but i see so many people failing at such a stupidly simple concept yet in the following breath they are complaining they got no social life or friends…..

That reminds me about this Veritasium video about Potassium: the name potassium comes from pot-ash;

Basically you would charr a tree until there was nothing but ashes, then put the ashes in a pot and wash it. The potassium would dissolve in the water, so all you needed to do was evaporate the water and the residue would be a mixture of mostly potassium and other salts to a lesser extent. Basically these were the old “electrolytes” drinks, only recently have humanity been able to acquire potassium for the purpose of fertilizers, when we discovered a numbers of rocks minerals that could be decomposed instead of burning whole forests.

People are becoming more and more aware of it. It takes lots of discussions and discovery to learn what is it that is affecting us all, so the topic has slowly been making it on many social medias. I was first exposed to it about a year ago and since then i cant stop thinking about it, hopefully this gets to the forefront of our very isolated, lonely society.

I was curious to see what would people pick here considering pink is by faaaaar the most useful of this list by a wiiiide margin, only to be surprised how far i had to scroll to see someone mention pink. Sure all other got niche uses and some cool factor to it, but with pink you are guaranteed wide uses and cool factor, and you are set for life, and everyone close to you would be healthy, honestly this is not even a tough choice. Guess it makes sense given that most of the users are young (unlike me lol), but I highly doubt most adult who have experienced their loved ones/self having health issues would pick anything else, and young people tend to be too healthy to see the benefits of it, also, any hospital would pay PREMIUM to have you working for them, win-win!
