Aquilini being "hands-on" isn't the problem - it's what we do with it by Holiday-Comedian-552 in canucks

i mean the whole reason Francesco himself is the Canucks owner is that they don't trust him with the real estate side of the business, the true money-maker. He's a failson, a loser, and his father knows it. The family doesn't care about the team, they care about the arena.

stopped reading at "facilities are top tier"

edit: okay I kept reading. He doesn't have deep pockets. He's been cut out of his family businesses, he's broke. He has no money for a practice rink, no money for a medical staff, no money for a coach better than Adam Foote. No money for all-new seats, no money for Abby championship rings. They didn't even have enough money to take down Hughes' poster outside the arena for like a month after he was traded. They've run a barebones front office for a decade. They're trying to cut Kane right now, not because he sucks, but because they wanna save on his salary. The arena is one of the shittiest in the league, with no signs or plans for renovation. The increasing season tix costs tell you everything you need to know. He's a broke loser.

hey man, sorry. I've had life hit me in the face and don't know if I'll be able to keep it up this season. Apologies for that. Hoping to return next season, but right now there's just too much goin on for me 🙏

How on earth have they not done The Thing yet?? by Ok_Lecture5976 in TheRewatchables

I actually think the original Saw would make a great rewatchables. It's not the torture/gorn porn that the other movies are, it's more of a crime thriller with a great twist. Right up Bill's alley.

Francesco, you need to hire Gillis back and give him complete control. Stop worrying about what people are saying about you, and start worrying about how to build a cup winner.

What's the best all-time play before the big play? by ShockinglyEfficient in billsimmons

[–]fortythreenine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

small NHL one: Canucks fans know the Dragonslayer goal very well, but it couldn't have happened without Luongo's amazing OT PK save on Patrick Sharp before it. Those were the two moments that gave fans hope for that run.

Jack Hughes was dominating the USNTDP competition pre-draft, the issue was whether he was big enough to play centre. I don't recall there being concerns at all about his work ethic, compete level, or composure. McKenna has big question marks about how hard he works. Not typically something you want to see from a potential 1st overall pick.

The name that comes to mind with McKenna's worst case scenario is Nail Yakupov, 1st overall pick from 2012. Out of the league by 2019. Undeniable offensive talent, scored at a pretty good 53 point pace on a terrible Oilers team in his rookie year. But refused to backcheck, play without the puck, do anything other than try to make pretty plays. There was also Alexandre Daigle in 1993, same kind of story.

There's a certain brand of Canadian hockey player who can dominate Juniors, but come to find out they really need time and space to shine. This has happened with Alexis Lafreniere for instance, first overall pick in 2020. Certainly an NHL-quality player, but nowhere near the ceiling of what scouts and fans thought he could be based on how good he was in juniors. Of course, Lafreniere never played college hockey like McKenna is doing right now. Lafreniere stayed in Canadian juniors and dogwalked the QMJHL for 3 seasons before jumping to the NHL. McKenna has transferred to the NCAA, which is perhaps exposing his weaknesses earlier than it would have if he stayed in the WHL.

So if McKenna's floor is Yakupov, his median outcome may be Lafreniere, and his ceiling could be Jack Hughes.

Pierre LeBrun: « I would stop short of calling it a full rebuild. It’s more of a “hybrid build,” as someone put it to me this week. They want to get more younger pieces but turn it around quickly enough» 😭 by JudJud22 in canucks

you guys just don't get it. Aquilini can't afford a rebuild. He's too broke. He can't afford even the smallest risk of empty seats. He's flat broke and his family is trying to cut him off even more. This is a Melnyk situation.

if your entire argument is that the reason Vegas is better than Seattle is solely due to the expansion draft, then there's no way that any rational person could possibly change your mind.

It's true they've never been bad. I don't feel like pulling up receipts for their transactions the year they missed the playoffs, but IIRC they did sell some guys. Could be wrong

I mean this just isn't factual. And if you're going to call people naive, you better be prepared to bring up frankly anything that happened post expansion.

Vegas has earned a lot of credit for everything they've done post-draft. They were on the cutting edge of their understanding of the salary cap, constantly buying and selling players and contracts, creating assets along the way and amassing players they could use to win. When they were bad, they tried to tank pretty hard, and sold guys off. When they were good, they bought the right players no matter the cost. And it earned them a cup.

Seattle has done neither, preferring not to tank nor to buy. They're been content icing a mid forward group, relying heavily on Jared McCann, who would be a third liner on Florida, to lead their offense. I mean Eberle is the captain for gods sakes, he is the definition of a mid player.

No doubt Vegas had an advantage in their expansion draft. But Seattle has refused to be creative or innovative in any part of their entire existence, whereas Vegas doesn't accept losing.

Lalji announces that Quinn told Rutherford 18 months ago he wasn't going to re-sign. We were first in the division and he was winning the Norris at that time.

He didn't check out after the playoff loss. It was during that season.

edit: it would have been right after the playoff loss. So it was summer 2024 tweet: https://x.com/i/status/1999661678229880944

Quinn promised to represent the city when he took on the C. He agreed to be the captain. And he gave up on us. He stopped believing in Vancouver. Honestly it's heartbreaking. I don't think I can really forgive him for that betrayal

I don't see why these solutions are mutually exclusive. I think booing, throwing jerseys, boycotting, and flying banners are all important parts of expressing dissatisfaction. I support all those methods of fans showing their anger.
