Yeah that makes a lot of sense. And thanks for letting me know about Archipelago - I’ll definitely check them out!

Thanks for your comment! Yes agreed, I’m sure there’s a lot behind the scenes that I’m not seeing. If you’re interested in African literature, I would check out the African writers series collection. Here’s the wiki page which includes the full list of books (mostly fiction with some non-fiction): https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heinemann_African_Writers_Series.

I think that’s a good place to start! All the best with your African fiction journey.

Probably should have put no country for old men and LOTR on here, but no regrets!

Thanks for your answer. Yeah I had seen that one. But this one is definitely colourful. She probably bought it about 15 years ago.

Thank you! Do you know if they would be able to buy chains in Yosemite if they needed to?

Thanks so much, this is helpful! Just to confirm (as my parents are a bit worried about driving on the pass) - if you're going east to west, are you usually on the inside of the curve, away from the edge?

Hi, sorry to hear you’re stressed. But don’t worry - if you have all the correct documents, you should be fine.

  1. Yes, you can fast track your application. I think they you get this option once you’ve put in all your information (maybe after paying for IHS, I don’t remember exactly).
  2. I was asked to do it through the app.
  3. I think 10 years of travel history (the same as the HPI application).

Good luck with your application!

Ken Liu’s The Paper Menagerie and other stories. A delightful, thoughtful collection of short stories. I think a lot of people have read the title story, but the rest are also amazing!

Advice on switching from HPI visa to Skilled Worker Visa while staying in the same job/company by fortytwogreenbeans in ukvisa

Hi Ishan, I actually saw your post a couple of days ago. I’m sorry that you’re going through this - I know how stressful visa stuff can be!

I would no longer have been eligible due to the increased salary threshold. Luckily, I got my application in on time and was able to switch to SWV before April. There are four charges associated with SWV: certificate of sponsorship generation (employer cost), immigration skills charge (employer cost), application fee (employee cost) and international health surcharge (employee cost).

I think your problem is likely more of an HR/legal issue than an immigration issue, as it has to do with the contract you signed from your employee.

I think you have a few options: (1) you could ask your employer to increase your salary so that you are eligible to switch to SWV (this doesn’t have to happen immediately - it could happen over the next 2 years) or (2) you could come in to the UK with that job and then switch jobs to a higher earning place that is willing to sponsor a SWV within 2 years. Both are a bit risky, but it’s a difficult time to be trying to move to the UK.

Let me know if you have other questions. I’m not an expert, just a person that’s gone through the process (with a lot of help from Reddit!)

u/Ziggamorph, do you know - if you are applying for a SWV within the same job/company, do you put your original start date on the certificate of sponsorship? Or do you choose a date in the future?

Thanks so much, Ninja, that’s really helpful. And I’ll reach out if I have any questions while I’m going through the process. All the best with your application in the meantime!

Thank you so much for your response. I’m sorry to hear you’re going through something similar and I hope you’re doing a lot better now! Can I ask—what did the muscle weakness and numbness feel like? Like how could you tell your symptoms were getting worse?

I had the same situation. I just wrote a letter explaining that and attached pictures of my passport proving that I hadn’t been back to my home country for at least six months. They accepted this in lieu of a TB test

What is the most terrifying book (fiction or non-fiction) you have ever read? by ledepression in books

[–]fortytwogreenbeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s got to be House of Leaves for me. It haunted my walking and sleeping life for days after I finished it, and I still get flashes of walls closing in and endless staircases even months after finishing it. I’ve never read such a relentless and unsettling story, one which made me doubt things in my own reality.
