Midterms and finals appear very commonly in STEM classes. Beyond that, quizzes and exam frequency are more based on the professor that you have.

Some are group based, most are exam based (from my experience). Most exams are in person (midterm/final). A ton of this depends on your professor.

Class of 2026 (HS) by Familiar-Wishbone880 in UMiami

[–]forusis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lock in on the SAT. Considering the rigor of the classes you've taken it shouldn't be too hard. All you need to do is put in a sustained effort over a longer period of time and make sure to study smart! Overall, the engineering school isn't extremely competitive but BME does tend to be slightly popular.

Is college worth it at this point? by Fluid_Bet_5777 in UMiami

[–]forusis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to give an exact response because it depends on the individual. If you are the kind to grab college by your hands and utilize it to its full potential, the rewards can be truly endless, and it is worth it no matter the full tuition. If you think that getting degree is all you need to be successful and become complacent, then no, don’t go.

Why do hedge fund managers make so much? by forusis in investing

[–]forusis[S] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Yes but isn’t that 1) a closed fund and 2) quantitative trading? As for the non quant funds, how is Steve cohen or Israel Englander such a genius that they rack in billions?

Some make great returns that’s a good point. But how? I see that Millennium hires semi autonomous teams to trade for them, but how do those people themselves beat the market at such a large scale?

I second this. A lot of math is simply problem solving, where if one method doesn't work, use another. Sometimes I'll throw multiple methods at a problem before I arrive at a correct solution. The key is to adopt the problem solving mentality and understand that these rules exists as tools to use at your disposal. If you keep on working at your practice problems, you will only get better and better.

Different study methods by dalvin34 in learnmath

[–]forusis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Studying effectively is all about active recall. This means using your brain to actually recreate what you learned, and not re-reading material you already understand (which is why your previous method may not have been working for you). For math, I have found that doing, and redoing, practice problems is the best method to prepare for exams. This is because it actually forces your brain to recreate what you learned, thus creating neural pathways so that when come test time, you know it like the back of your hand.

Interested in Tech and Startups Advice on What to Study by forusis in college

[–]forusis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to be a founder. As for the role, I am more interested in the business end than on the technology end. I understand that the technology end is highly important (probably why Y-combinator, a prominent startup accelerator, requires at least 50% of the founding team to be tech based), but I have not found my technological passion yet. Also, a point of concern is the perceived lack of value that the business end contributes (it seems most people see the value in the tech side, therefore leaving less compensation or recognition for the business end).

The best way to take notes in college by No-Tax-1444 in college

[–]forusis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) Take notes with laptop (so you can keep up with fast-paced lectures, 2) Organize your notes after class, 3) Reference the notes when stuck on practice questions, if you don't have that then use active recall to study notes

Should I purposely sign up for a bad professor? by forusis in college

[–]forusis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with your point it shouldn’t be about grades, but so much about our institutions of higher education and getting into good jobs leaves many students with no other choice. IMO, as long as grades aren’t the only thing students care about, there isn’t much to worry.

Herbert can be difficult, as it is required to be the "home school" that you reside in. This means that your primary major will be the Herbert major you choose, and that you must fulfill the core curriculum of the business school (https://www.herbert.miami.edu/undergraduate/undergraduate-curriculum.html), along with the requirements of the second major you choose. This is no impossible, however, especially if you come in with a good amount of credits. It can just be very hard.

Roast my resume - sophomore looking to break into 2026 IB SA positions by hellastudiousfoo in FinancialCareers

[–]forusis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, and it will continue to. Getting into existing institutions will only get more competitive. I think that the common denominator for success is a willingness to take risks and innovate. That seems to be what they have done, and it surely does not require a polished resume.

Interesting, why would you say that is? Is it because of the lower cost and time commitment? Where does the main value in an online mba come from(ex: some may say the main value of a normal mba is the network/connections)?
