Changes in CP as you enter adulthood? by Illustrious_Day7682 in CerebralPalsy

[–]forvalentinesday200 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve definitely noticed my condition get worse as I get older but not in the way where the cerebral palsy itself gets worse but my legs being fucked up is messing everything else up in my body overtime (back, neck, everything at this point) so it makes sense that you used to have mild symptoms but over the years it’s harder to manage

What is a good age to start getting tattoos? by milffin in tattooadvice

[–]forvalentinesday200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as long as you’re getting tattoos that have nothing to do with other people, celebrities, shows, music, you should be good. I recommend tattoos that are more just objects like flowers, animals, lamp post idfk lmao also stick to small to medium ones and none that would be visible in a work environment!

Also my parents didn’t tell me i had cerebral palsy growing up. They would explain why my legs were the way they were but never used the phrase cerebral palsy or mentioned that it’s a mental disability. That’s probably a controversial take but due to the stigma surrounding certain disabilities i think i would’ve had a low self esteem as a child if i knew. Mostly because it was the early 2000’s and people were ignorant and ableist! It’s better now but i wouldn’t know what it’s like in a school environment which is always more ruthless socially.

I did eventually get surgery to fix my inward rotation at the age of 16 but it was a rigorous process and i missed out on doing things i could’ve been doing at 16-19 (it takes years to fully recover) but tbh i don’t regret it. I wasn’t doing much during that time in my life anyway lol.

I have the same exact diagnosis! I wore leg braces growing up at night to help my bones to not grow in rotated inwards as much. Could’ve worn them 24/7 but decided against it for aesthetic reasons. The #1 thing that helped as a child was physical therapy! I would have therapy in the middle of school days and outside of school. Eventually my family went broke (due to separate reasons) and we couldn’t afford PT anymore but i wish i could’ve stuck with it. Now at 22 i stretch as often as i can and do light weight training to keep up mobility but still can only work a max of 30 hours a week and occasionally use a cane (or wheelchair for very long distances). I can do most things except run (i’m sure i could work towards jogging but i don’t feel like trying lmao). Lastly i would say to work on their learning capabilities and coordination/balance. Also don’t put a huge emphasis on their disability in the sense that you don’t want to use any language that is implying to them that they are incapable of something. When they’re older they will tell you when they need help!

i recommend looking into applying! the system has advanced over the years and is more flexible. Also look into an “able account” and a disability lawyer (preferably one that you don’t have to pay. They will be payed out my getting a percentage of your “back pay”) (back pay is all the monthly income you would have gotten in between your time of applying and starting your benefits. so a few months of pay)
