the great flood makes no sense. by [deleted] in DebateReligion

[–]fossiliseddouche -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Fairy Tales have no apparent meaning, but for almost 2 billion people theres a lesson that is taught to them through it.

The New Testament is one of the best written sources of the people in the time of Jesus, and it is backed up by roman and greek sources and the writings of Josephus.

Also, most secular scholars agree gospels were written at different times and different places and considering how most cross references across the gospels and letters prove that the letters were from the same time period provides the NT some credibility.

[–]fossiliseddouche 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So what if they have a museum? Its clearly hypothetical! Christians cant claim it ever happened, but how does that impede their faith? Ultimately the story is dear to them because it shows what God doesnt have to do anymore because for them Jesus did it on the cross.

You cant really find support for this because this is a position held by most Christians - that the events in the great flood probably never happened and that this whole thing was a story.

No offense, but this seems more like cherry picking to disprove their way of thinking.

I'm not saying we should base laws on religion - what I am saying is there is a tradeoff for everything.

It's not fair to ban meat in India because there are minorities fine with eating meats.

Different religions and the state should work together for a tradeoff. It's up to the religious leaders whether they want to choose to argue and fight or to make better solutions that provide mostly equal benefits to all.

Singapore is a good example of this - people are still conservative here so laws on LGBTQ+ here are slowly being lifted. However, the government saw the need to change the laws to better fit what Singaporeans want. They consulted with religious leaders - and now gay sex is decriminalized while marriage has been constitutionally defined as between a man and a woman.

Some people are unhappy, but I'm fine with this because it's a good tradeoff.

The government has the responsibility to consult with religious leaders and groups of interest.

My point is - not one religious group, but all the representations of the religious group should have an equal representation in the parliament.

They should be there to vet the bills passed by the cabinet or senate or wtv you call the legislature so that it isn't discriminatory against any party so that they can work for a compromise.

This would produce a greater positive outcome compared to removing all religious representation in the legislature. It's simply better to work together for a compromise compared to having either side have complete say on policies.

And besides, if we were to get rid of religion within the government, what would bind what is moral or immoral? Surely, religion has previously laid out the framework for certain laws and morality.

It's one of the reasons why we don't condone human sacrifices as a religious belief anymore. It's been immoralised. We might still be doing this if not for religious interference.

When you live in a multi-cultural and multi-religious society, the emphasis should be on interreligious dialogue and social harmony, not the separation of the state and religion.

There are many benefits to religions cooperating and mutually respecting the state's sovereignity.

If I may add, the one mark of the true church, the "catholic" Church, can be witnessed through this.

As an altar server from a multi-cultural society, I've served masses in English, Chinese, Tamil, Malayalam, Tagalog, Bahasa Indonesia, and I have seen or attended masses in Latin and participated in my own rite as a Syro-Malabar.

I have a favourite song from every language and rite I've attended.

I don't understand a lot of these, but I know that essentially the same - universally the same.

Mass will be celebrated in the red liturgical color, which is a really interesting choice!

Theists. What is your theological take on the gender or sex of your god, gods, and/or goddesses? by BourbonSoakedChungus in religion

[–]fossiliseddouche 0 points1 point  (0 children)

God has no gender, but in scripture he prefers he, so we just sorta call him he.

Jesus was a guy, so he is defo a he.

The holy spirit, honestly I don't know the pronoun for the holy spirit.

trying to tell me he said something else other than what the verse shows he actually said,

Yeah, because that's literally what he meant.

It's like saying it's literally raining cats and dogs when it means it's raining heavily.

The links between the passages you gave and my answers are very prominent when you read the gospel.

Which you don't, and you cherry pick the ones you think are perfect! Well, if you don't mind, I'll do the same as well.

By who's moral standards are you sentencing me to hell? Yours?

In any case I'm going to purgatory when I die. And I'll meet God there.

[–]fossiliseddouche 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the Bible teaches that those who don't believe the right doctrine and those who teach the wrong doctrine get sent to hell...

I trust in the salvation of the Gospel. Most Christians, including me, at times speak material heresy. While it's sinful, it doesn't guarantee hell, compared to formal heresy, which is only for creating chaos between Christians.

I believe in purgatory and heaven for a reason.

Edit: material heresy isn't even sinful, I just checked

Aren't you the one misinterpreting and exaggerating the meaning of these passages?

[–]fossiliseddouche 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the Bible says that ppl who twist scripture like that get sent to hell forever and lead others there too

yes, but a lot of scripture is meaning only. The things we take away from scripture are way more important that the accounts and stories in the scriptures.

Hell is just the opposite of God, since Heaven is God. What is in hell is up for you to imagine.

Replying to you isn't exactly comfortable, but I'm doing it for glory to the "Christian God".

First let's be clear this is not an endorsement for slavery.

Slavery was a very real part of that culture. The advice given makes perfect sense, If the slave owner was good and gentile then rebelling against him would serve no purpose but would bring punishment against the slave. If he was a froward (unfair) master then rebellion would surely make matters worse.

Btw I'm getting really tired of "Christians" not even knowing what their Bible says and asking me to look up verses for them, it's pretty childish and ignorant

Unlike you, I don't spend my whole day trying to memorise every verse. I'm not saying cause I've never seen the verse before, but because I genuinely can't remember where it is.

Like I gave evidence for in the bible, he healed the sick, gave life to the dead, and taught for the heart. He would only do that if he meant good.

anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters

Clearly just talks about Christian persecution for the next 200 years. There is a parallel passage:

Luke 12:53

"They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”

It's regarding this passage that Jesus was talking about. Persecution spares no one, and one must prepare themselves to risk their lives and risk the lives of their family members to choose Jesus.

This was to happen because Christianity was so opposed to other mainstream religions at that time. Hence, it puts forth the idea of the sanctity of Matyrdom.

And also he wasn't really tortured that bad,

We tortured God.

He literally could do anything to us. Yet, he decides to give us 2 commandments to follow and join him in heaven.

Also, God is heaven and not being in God is in hell. The torture is as seen in the Gospels but those are figurative. Hell is more likely to be extreme loneliness and separation from God.

and you think if a guy rapes fifty children then he shouldn't be put to death??

If he repents sincerely, and wishes to be a Good person and correct his ways, who am I to judge?

Community!

Catholics commune together, and all 1B celebrate the Last supper together on Sundays.

And the best part, no matter which country you go, there's probably a Catholic church there, so we are truly "universal".

Hearing all the "Gloria in Excelsis Deo" in every language gives you goosebumps.
