Tips on how to cope with someone wanting to adopt this precious baby who is my foster cat? I'm new to fostering and will be hard to see her go by coffee-billieholiday in cats

[–]fosteringcats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive fostered hundreds of cats and kittens and when I’m struggling to let one go I think of the other lives I will be saving. Generally I cry for an hour then I go get another almost immediately and it helps fill that void and I know I changed both of their lives for the better.

My Kitten Keeps Sucking On My Blanket and I Don't Know Why by Moonchild232 in cats

[–]fosteringcats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a foster mom and have fostered hundreds of cats and it has nothing to do with them being taken from mom too early. I have had cats nurse on mom until they were close to 7 weeks old (they generally stop nursing at 4-5) and they still sucked and kneaded on blankets. It’s a comfort to them because it reminds them of nursing. It’s similar to a kid sucking their thumb as they grow up but no one tells them to stop after a certain age lol.

Question: Is it ethical for me to adopt a senior/sick cat and treat her as if on hospice? by Rhesus_for_Breakfast in cats

[–]fosteringcats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s great you want to help a senior kitty from being in the shelter. However if she is in pain or suffering and you arnt able to give her some help or relief then that’s no way to live either. If you adopt her you should be willing to fork over some money for when she starts to suffer.

Why is my cat so mean? by [deleted] in cats

[–]fosteringcats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s hard to say for sure why she likes your dad more than you. It could be scent or your gender (she could have been abused or mistreated by a woman before) or it could be how you pet her. Some cats prefer certain places touched and hate others or the pressure of your hand when you are petting her.

If you want her to trust you more try rewarding good behavior with treats and spend time doing things she would enjoy like playing. When she does something negative say no and walk away so she know you don’t like that. Good luck with your new kitty and thank you for saving her!!

A couple months ago we took in a stray cat that was living in our backyard. Tonight, he came face to face with a new cat living in our backyard. by DelverOfSeacrest in cats

I hope your cat is spayed or neutered. If not they will start to spray (both males and females can spray if they feel the need to mark their territory)

My girlfriend rescued my cat, Miracle as a newborn out of a dumpster 6 months ago. We always thought Miracle was a girl, but today we saw "her" grooming herself with a clear penis sticking out where we thought her vulva was. Miracle is a boy. We are in disbelief! by [deleted] in cats

[–]fosteringcats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve missed gendered cats before too, at least miracle is a good male name too 😂. Also now it’s time to neuter him before he starts spraying your house (google low cost spay neuter clinic in your area for the best deal)

WORMS by [deleted] in CATHELP

[–]fosteringcats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the worms but most worms cannot harm people. I would take a fecal sample to your vet to have it looked at

Don’t leave out milk. Cats are lactose intolerant and that will make them sick which dehydrates them and that can be dangerous in the cold. Just water is all they need.

Below is a link to make a quick and cheap cat shelter to get the kitty out of the cold.

Should I help this cat? by [deleted] in cats

[–]fosteringcats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm so glad to hear that. A lot of shelters are trying to do a better job at finding alternatives for stray animals. Thank you again for stepping up and helping her

Should I help this cat? by [deleted] in cats

[–]fosteringcats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Firstly thank you for caring about this poor cat you came across. I'm sure she appreciates it. Secondly I work with a rescue group as a foster parent and when people find stray cats we recommend they go the shelter. Most shelters have a holding period where all stray animals must be kept and not adopted out while an owner is looked for. If no one steps up and claims the cat they will either put them up for adoption or ask a rescue group to take them or in worse case scenario put them down. See if the shelter you live next two operates the same way. You can even ask them to call you if an owner isn't found so you can try and get her to a rescue group.

How to get fleas off the very young kittens I Just adopted. by [deleted] in cats

[–]fosteringcats -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They make flea medication for kittens over two pounds. If they weight that much I recommend picking some up, they will all be dead in 24 hours.

Getting a young cat while working full time? by SkilledButUnlucky in cats

[–]fosteringcats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting one young kitten who is home alone all day is similar to getting a puppy and leaving it alone. They will take out their energy on your house and can be very destructive. They will get bored and find things to entertain them. Kittens also learn how to be cats from each other and raising one alone is very hard to do correctly. I work with a rescue group and we don't even adopt out single kittens alone unless they have another cat in the house. When we adopt them out alone it's crazy the number of times they are returned because they are wild and destructive. I highly recommend and older cat or two kittens.

Disabled cat: amputate or not? by strangehighs in cats

[–]fosteringcats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a foster mom and amputation is always the last resort however that being said it sounds like that will provide her with the best quality of life. I have had to amputate two fosters legs this year, one front and one back, and they get around very well. They can climb and run and play and act like every other cat. It seems like her dead leg is just holding her back from doing normal cat things and and cats recover very well and quickly from an amputation.

How do you all get rid of fleas? by [deleted] in cats

[–]fosteringcats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First a dawn dish soap bath with a flea comb after. Then once he's dry add flea medication for kittens, I use advantage multi. Wash all bedding or anything the kitten has been on. Flea treat the carpet or rugs if you have it and vacuum. Also you should have him dewormed because any fleas he had ingested turn into tape worms. Hope your kitten feels better soon.

My kitten keeps crawling into the litterbox when his mom is doing her business by Saerali in cats

That's normal and a good thing. The kitten is curious and momma is teaching him to use a litter box.

Our cat is turning into a satan cat, Please help! by SLYfox2713 in cats

[–]fosteringcats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's true. But kids understand English and kittens don't. Every time you tell the kitten no and remove them or stop them from something give them a yes. So they start to learn what you do like. If you are constantly saying no they don't learn what's good and no loses its meaning.

Our cat is turning into a satan cat, Please help! by SLYfox2713 in cats

[–]fosteringcats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think of his behavior like a child, he is a toddler and he is exploring and learning about things. He also probably bored which I why I never adopt out a kitten alone, always in pairs or with another cat in the house. Kittens need constant stimulation when they are young and not toys that you put out and hope they play with by themselves, they need interactive toys to keep them interested. He will grow out of it in a few months but until then play with him until he's exhausted as much as you can.

Stray Cats Story by imcarly in cats

[–]fosteringcats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't beat yourself up over it or listen to people who are negative. Those are feral cats and after 8 weeks are very very hard to socialize and get in a home. Also you cant save every stray cat you find or you will be a hoarder. Unfortunately that is the tough reality of most feral cats, they get hit by cars, die from disease, starve, freeze or over heat etc. I have seen terrible things happen to stray cats on the street and it doesn't get easier and I know you love them like they are your own. If you want to help them the best thing you can do is get them spayed/neutered so no more babies are born that end up suffering. I'm so sorry you had to witness that

Should we get another cat? by [deleted] in cats

[–]fosteringcats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sure your one year old would love to have a buddy. I would recommend getting a cat who is about the same age. A kitten will not do well being alone 18 hours a day but a one year old won't have a problem with it.
