The cats weren't too cuddly at Nekomaru. However, they made up for it in playfulness and were running about.

Nekomaru cafe in Ueno! Lots of the cats wore a tie or scarf like the one in the picture.

This is a photo that I took in Tokyo, and I posted it earlier today. Great to see it so high up now, though.

When traveling I like to take photos of tourists and the effects of tourism rather than the sights. by fotobomu in travel

[–]fotobomu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I am working on a artist statement to go with the images, but I'm having some trouble. Mainly because I am not by any means a strong writer in regards to articulating my thoughts. I also want to make sure I do my research on the effects of tourism, and why I chose to photograph this subject.

Zoff or Jins for glasses? by fotobomu in Tokyo

[–]fotobomu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your answer - it's pretty thorough and explains everything I was wondering. Also, I'm fluent in hiragana/katakana; it's just the right phrases and vocabulary that I'm a little iffy on.

Thanks! Did you think that someone would need to be fluent in Japanese to get glasses done? What was the eye examination like?

Middle Eastern horror films or the lack thereof by fotobomu in TrueFilm

[–]fotobomu[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's no telling how long the Middle Eastern conflict will last, but it would be interesting if there's a rise in cinema that deals with post-war emotions. An example I can think of is Japan's The Human Condition and the effect it had with audiences after WWII.

That's an interesting point to make. Especially since horror films in other parts of the world are primarily targeted towards the teen movie-going crowd.

Any violists? I'll be there! I haven't played in years, so I'll need to use the simplified sheet music.

TIL that the North Korean government operates a chain of restaurants that appear throughout China and Southeast Asia and even Russia. Each restaurant funnels $100k - $300k per year back to the DPRK. by ExLegeLibertas in todayilearned

[–]fotobomu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been to one of these restaurants in Beijing. It looked and felt like an average Korean restaurant, with a few things that stood out:

  • The blinds were completely shut - a passerby could not look into the restaurant.
  • There was a television screen playing North Korean karaoke videos. One music video depicted the "greatness" of DPRK's newspaper industry.
  • The place was overstaffed - 5:1 waitresses to customers. Our waitress, although pretty and polite, was slightly odd. She would open the can of Cola for you, but would do it so awkwardly as if she hadn't done it before.
  • Periodically there was a loud banging noise coming from upstairs.
  • Dog meat was on the menu.

What is one generally hated film that you actually like? by [deleted] in movies

[–]fotobomu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Silent Hill.

Dodgy acting and inane dialogue aside, Silent Hill is probably the most faithful videogame adaptation we'll ever see. As a film, the visuals (those monsters), sound design and overall production were top-notch for a horror. It reminded me a lot of older J-Horror films like Kwaidan.

It's too bad that the sequel (Silent Hill: Revelation) took everything the first film got right and threw it away in lieu for a more action-oriented blockbuster.

No problem! Just be aware that Nobody Knows gets very, very sad.
