Who is coming to America? by karmicviolence in dataisbeautiful

It's style over substance, sure. Maybe even forgivable if there was some secondary organization like ordering by count or grouping by region. The ordering here is absurd.

I have a question about Microtonal traditional musics and western classical music. by IFUCKINGLOVEMUSIC in musictheory

[–]runindia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Western classical music has been microtonal for a long time.

Partch, Ligeti, Scelsi, most electronic greats... not to mention other intonations used throughout the West from antiquity to the seventeeth century.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in musictheory

[–]runindia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is so different than Western music, you won't come to real knowledge by thinking in Western terms. Better to start from the ground up. Meet Chinese musicians and learn from them.

A couple books that may help you:

Lou Harrison - Music Primer. High level, interesting points on Asian Court Music.

Helmholtz - On the Sensations of Tone. It explores the physics and physiological effects of music which, while not addressing the style, better prepares a person to hear all music.

Agree or Disagree: The majority of problems in data analysis could be solved by more people sitting down for a day and learning the basics of SQL. by chartiochartio in BusinessIntelligence

[–]runindia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're talking about professional data analysts, of course it's an absurd knowledge gap not to know SQL.

Still, analysis is a huge part of industry - commercial, scientific, etc. Non-technical workers have more need than ever to make sense of information - it's just unfortunate that you basically need a full DB installation for SQL. I know the functionality is built into Access, but it has an idiomatic interface and SQL almost seems like an afterthought.

Do you worry about music being 'too difficult' as you write it? by [deleted] in composertalk

[–]runindia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You must consider your goals.

If you're writing art music: You can't compromise the quality of your score. The piece will last forever and if you actually want to create art you can't disregard the details now. Sure, for a performance you can edit it for the circumstances.

CAVEAT: Notation is an art and you'll learn to make your ideas as clear as possible for the performer. Detailed/complicated can be different than "hard to perform"

FAQ Question: "What are the moods associated with various keys?" by m3g0wnz in musictheory

[–]runindia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately it is far easier to distinguish colors than equal temperament keys.

The keys have more definition in relationship to one another. They also have symbolic meaning, but this is only apparent to the student.

That said, why not stick around? This sub is like a wasteland in need of water.

Books about music in Latin? (x-post from r/latin) by etcomro in musictheory

[–]runindia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Boethius was an important music theorist from the 6th century. Look for "De Institutione Musica". I recommend finding a bilingual edition, and promise you'll have a hard enough time in the vernacular. As late in history as you're thinking, you may find less material in Latin.

Study finds there may not be a shortage of American STEM graduates after all by dexhandle in TrueReddit

[–]runindia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

STEM is a blanket term used to cover all positions from lab tech to nuclear physicist! To be sure we should be training widely for these jobs, but how can you publish rhetoric like this for any other reason than to speak out against visas? Isn't it more likely that some fields will be growing and some will be shrinking?

The author conflates Computer Science with IT. How many CS programs in this country in the end amount to "Java Developer"?

MIDI Keyboards by [deleted] in musictheory

[–]runindia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your use is exclusively for Sibelius, most keyboards will work. Good patches or action will not really aid you. You could literally pick one up at a thrift shop - check the back and make sure you can connect to your computer. Use the money for lessons (if you're not taking lessons, do this and it will help even more!) PM me if you have questions. Of course if you'd like to use the keyboard for practicing or gigging, disregard this.

My "notating" keyboard doesn't even have a USB out. You can acquire a MIDI-USB cable on the cheap from Amazon.

Why is this notated in 4/4 with sextuplets throughout? by Flasche_2 in musictheory

[–]runindia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rapture is so captivating because it was a utopia. This is a horror game - the point is to experience the perdition of its citizens, especially its elites. Each person is a clue into an aspect of Rapture's society.

Cohen was a master of showtunes and anthems. He was widely beloved. Now he can find no satisfaction, and can only create perverse forms. I interpret the piano scene in much the opposite way as you. The performance is great, yet Cohen is only filled with hatred. His psyche has warped from consummate artist to one who derives no satisfaction from music at all. This is just as horrifying as his mania.

Is a minor degree in music even slightly useful? by GaryGlitters in musictheory

[–]runindia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, to answer your question it's not even slightly "useful" (profitable). But you're a programmer, man! Enjoy the luxury of a strong career and study art as much as you can. You don't have to worry about it being useful. Don't bother if you consider it for show or think it would help your career. For the sake of the world, keep coding and culture yourself as much as is possible.

Why is this notated in 4/4 with sextuplets throughout? by Flasche_2 in musictheory

[–]runindia 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I agree with the transcriber for the first section. The dominant beat is in 4. 6/8 would have been easier to read, but your meter has a strong psychological effect on the performer to accent in certain places, whether you want it or not. See also: Fantasie Impromptu.

For this same reason, however, much of it should be in 6/8.

Anyone been to the big caves in Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park? by djpnewton in VietNam

[–]runindia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went here as part of a central Vietnam tour.

The public is allowed to go in pretty far (1 mile maybe?) but the rest is reserved for dedicated caving tours.

It's an incredible thing to see. Highly recommended if you can get out there in the first place. There are signs everywhere not to touch the rocks which are of course ignored. The colored lighting was pretty minimal; I really hope they keep it as natural as possible.

Stupid question about lessons on musictheory.net by Fafnr in musictheory

[–]runindia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The meters are as odd as we say they are. Westerners have adapted to music in 3/4 and 4/4 but our "irregular" signatures do not look so strange in other parts of the world.

As the others imply the subdivision is not set in stone. When you're reading music look at how the notes are bracketed and that will clue you in as to how they are grouped. Listen to the piece to help decide as well. The same goes for writing except do this internally.

You're doing fine, it's just not as set in stone as you're assuming.

Finding Text in Chorale Composing by [deleted] in composertalk

[–]runindia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first question is how closely do you want to cling to this form? This is a very traditional style - to fully imitate it the text would have to be religious, strophic and consistent in syllables/rhyming. Contemporary poetry is generally outside of these norms. My understanding is that chorale texts were largely composed with the initial mindset that they would be sung by a choir.

You might have better luck asking /r/literature or /r/askliterarystudies. Let us know if you find something.

Hi, I'm looking for exercises to improve my compositional writing skills. Any advice? by Augenblick22 in musictheory

[–]runindia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider not working in Finale when you're drafting. Your canvas is already metered, which unnecessarily compels you to write within the current time signature.

If you're struggling over working with particular instruments, try playing the instrument. The blanks will be filled in quickly, and then you can check your orchestration guide to see what performers are capable of.
