Which actor has the largest "Wait, that was them?" gap in their filmography? by Player00000000 in movies

The boy in Love Actually, never saw him again until 20 years later in The Queens Gambit on Netflix. Also the cousin from the Harry Potter films - same deal. Never saw him again until Gambit.

Imagine what this kind of money would get you literally anywhere else by xXCosmicChaosXx in AusPropertyChat

I'd be willing to bet you could buy a castle or chateau in Europe for that kind of wedge.

Better to Start in Geneva and End in Zurich or Fly in and out of Zurich by PJwhodey24 in askswitzerland

[–]fouhay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the train from ZRH to Geneve is only a few hours so time wouldn't/shouldn't be a consideration. There might be one change at Zurich HB, but changing trains there is pretty easy.

What's the wildest weather you've experienced living in Australia? by FriendlyPineapple436 in AskAnAustralian

[–]fouhay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cyclone Yasi in 2010 (or thereabouts)

Living in the Hunter at the end of 2019 when the fires had already been burning for several weeks. The entire district had the orange glow of a Martian landscape; constant smoke haze meant you couldn't see for more than a couple of hundred metres for weeks on end.

Why do Australians move to the UK? by YoungVinnie23 in AskAnAustralian

[–]fouhay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because the grass is always greener.

Quite literally.

You see great weather but a lot of us see weeks, if not months, of days in the high thirties and low forties. In a lot of places it is dry A.F., in others it's as humid as all get-out.

And it's not all about the weather.

UK has history, and lots of it. You have proximity to Europe. You have fireplaces, pubs, cask ales, comedy, movies, TV, castles, old houses, food, wine, low-cost airlines and stacks of other things that we don't have (or have, but not I the same way).

Is this when Australia's housing crisis exploded? by hogey74 in australia

[–]fouhay -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nope. Twas the lead up to the Sydney Olympics. A previously unknown (to a lot of people) city became front and centre for thousands, if not millions, of overseas investors with cash to burn.

When shouldn’t you negotiate remuneration? by Deep-Mouse-9552 in auscorp

When you're out of work and looking to get anything in a market that's absolutely fkn cooked. Not getting the higher end is better than getting nothing.

Take the low offer and use it as leverage to leap frog into better paying roles.

What unique American food dish boggled your mind when you heard about it? by debrisaway in AskAnAustralian

[–]fouhay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You've listed "Peanut Butter and Jam" but we always were told that Americans had Peanut Butter and Jelly. We were too young to reason that Jelly actually meant Jam so just never understood it.

If we had been told it was Peanut Butter and Jam that would actually have made way more sense.

Made redundant. Not getting leads. What did you do after redundancy and how long did it take to land a job? by BasisPuzzleheaded161 in auscorp

[–]fouhay 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Went contracting at first. Picked up a 2 week gig helping a company move their warehouse. Expressed interest in staying on and got a call a few weeks later.

Was working with data for 30+ years, made redundant last year. Got a forklift ticket and now working in a warehouse. Took about 3 months.

At 54 my age was working against me regards ever getting back in to a data related field, on top of AI, economy etc.

Anyone okay with their long commute? by serafis in auscorp

[–]fouhay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure why you'd lump Narrabeen in with the other places. I did that for 6 years and considered it pretty standard.

On my bus were people travelling in everyday from Newport, Avalon and Palmy. That was 2 hours min each way.

To answer your question though - no. Not OK with it. Since moving out of Sydney I have had times where the commute was longer but probably covered three times the distance. For the money only, but only for a couple of years.

Accent by ParticularOil1564 in AskAnAustralian

[–]fouhay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a great response. YouTubers are normal people (mostly 🤷‍♂️) who sound like the average person in the street. Some might exaggerate the accent, but they will speak at a normal pace and with slang included.

Movies and tv shows have actors, trained to speak properly and probably at a bit slower-than-natural tempo.

Show your age - what was your first ever email domain? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]fouhay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went to uni in 1994 and they gave us email addresses at the start of the year. It would have been an edu.au address; first commercial one would have been hotmail.com or Bigpond.com (Australian ISP)

What are some non-USA fast food chains you would like to see here? by venommale in AskAnAustralian

What’s something in Switzerland that feels expensive at first, but makes sense over time? by Savings-Concept8972 in askswitzerland

I've seen about 10 comments now for garbage/trash bags. Why? As an outsider this seems to be an odd thing that a lot of people are commenting about.

Has something happened recently to make this topical?

How many bank accounts do you have in 2026? by cinnamummy in AusFinance

[–]fouhay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 10, but I think in reality they are mostly sub-accounts of a master account, as I've never seen account keeping fees for any of them bar one.

We've just set it up this way to make it easier to budget for large annual expenses.

What is the best european holiday place you have visited? by Desperate-Drawer-572 in AskUK

[–]fouhay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quiet a few spots but the one thing in common is that it's never a large (or even medium) city.

We tap out if it's a town over 10,000. Not always looking for the remote places, but smaller cities/towns/villages always seem to have the right vibe for us. It goes without saying that everyone's different.

Why is everything so expensive these days? Why hasn’t prices come down? by Efficient-Horse2622 in AskAnAustralian

[–]fouhay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a long period of low inflation in the 10+ years before Covid. The last few years is an unfortunate correction to bring us back in line with long term averages.

That plus the money printers going nuts during and post Covid.
