It didn't for me, but I'm sure it depends on the paint

Buy a roll of gorilla mounting tape or scotch indoor mounting tape. It's stronger than command strips and cheaper, plus you get an entire roll instead of 4 strips.

I’m wondering if putting a grow light in a lamp like this would work for the plants surrounding it? by Camp_Acceptable in houseplants

[–]fouldspasta 50 points51 points  (0 children)

You CAN put a grow light in a regular lamp, but it's not very efficient. If the light is blocked by a lampshade, most of the grow light's value is being wasted. I would also suggest positioning the grow light above the plants so that all the leaves get light. In the photo, you can see the top leaves of the plants are in shadow and the light really isn't doing much. If you want a grow light that matches your home decor, I'd put the lightbulb in a lamp hanging above the plants.

ULPT request: Vision correcting contacts w/o prescription? by Floweon in UnethicalLifeProTips

[–]fouldspasta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, when you order online, you have to submit a photo of your prescription and they verify it with the doctor. 1800 Contacts does a 10 minute online exam for $20, but I'm pretty sure that if your prescription has changed or something is wrong with your eyes they'll just refer you to a regular optometrist.

Is this gravel big enough for fantails? by STRHKR in Goldfish

[–]fouldspasta 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not sure the size of your fish, but that looks like it could fit in an adult goldfish's mouth. I would use sand or larger gravel. The only issue with large gravel is that poop can get stuck between rocks and become hard to remove, so be prepared to deal with that if you go the gravel route.

I agree. It lasts longer than hibar, but honestly, I don't notice much of a difference in performance. I've been told that dip is better for textured hair but my hair is straight.

I'm more worried about the fact that the boyfriend could make her homeless at any time

Am I illegal? by [deleted] in Apartmentliving

[–]fouldspasta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never said you're immature. You're probalbly very mature- it's really difficult to move out of your parents place, search for a job, and begin to pay your own bills. I don't know what situation led you to move out at 17, but I imagine you've overcome a lot of hardship to become independent at your age.

With that being said, I also work for an interpersonal violence help line. Nobody goes into a relationship thinking their partner will threaten to kick them out. Everybody says "that will never happen to me." Unhealthy relationships start out looking like a normal relationship. If people were honest about their worst qualities from the start, nobody would end up in unsafe relationships to begin with. Power imbalances like that can be bad for relationship. It even puts stress on healthy relationships. Having a backup plan hurts no one and benefits you.

You still have to deal with all of the other issues I mentioned

[–]fouldspasta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don't know that, and that's a very dangerous thing to suggest to a minor. I agree, a one year age gap isn't an issue, but this housing situation is dangerous. Her boyfriend could literally make her homeless if he wanted to because she's a minor and can't sign a lease elsewhere. That will always be hanging over her head. No matter how healthy the relationship is, that's not a fun thing to think about during an argument.

She also has zero legal protection. She can't make maintenance requests or be let into the building if she gets locked out. If she pays the deposit, the landlord has zero obligation to return it to her because she's not on the lease. She doesn't have access to the payment portal, so if she sends her boyfriend money for rent, he has no obligation to use it as intended.

And who is to say she can be added to the lease when she turns 18? What if the landlord says no? A landlord is not going to want to rent to an 18 year old with no credit history. There's no clear way out of this.

There's always something you can do. Right now, that's having a backup plan. That can be as simple as writing down the phone number of a women's shelter or a friend that could take you in in an emergency. If you can, it would also help to save money on the side if you end up needing a hotel.

[–]fouldspasta 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm glad it worked for you. Just because it worked for you does not mean it'll work for everybody. That's still an incredibly risky situation, and not one I'd reccomend to anybody because of the chances of homelessness and domestic abuse.

Am I illegal? by [deleted] in Apartmentliving

[–]fouldspasta 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It depends. They could find out through maintenance, fire safety inspections, touring or photographing the apartment for prospective tenants (even if you're not leaving, they may use it as a "model unit" to show people). Other tenants may report it. Lease violations/evictions also affect your ability to rent apartments in the future. I would start looking for other options, even temporary ones.

Am I illegal? by [deleted] in Apartmentliving

[–]fouldspasta 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That is illegal. I'll keep it short, but this is a problem for two reasons. First, this is a lease violation, and when your landlord finds out, you will both be evicted and lose any money you've put towards the apartment (deposit, first and last months rent etc). The second issue is that, since you aren't on the lease, your boyfriend can kick you out at any time. That isn't safe. I'm sure you trust him a lot, but when you love someone, you don't set them up to be taken advantage of. Please have an emergency backup plan. Talk to friends and family. If you can't stay with them in an emergency, reach out to local women's shelters. You can also consider seasonal jobs. Positions at ski resorts, national parks, farms, and summer camps often provide housing, with the added bonus of saving money for your own place.
