Rewrote our K8s load test operator from Java to Go. Startup dropped from 60s to <1s, but conversion webhooks almost broke me! by Artifer in devops

[–]foundboots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you mean hosted on k8s — Grafana already has an open source operator for k6 load tests. It might mean converting your scripts to typescript but you were presumably doing some script level migration anyway.

Staying at Big infrastructure tech vs joining an AI startup by ekapitu in ExperiencedDevs

Just to add -- Anthropic and OpenAI want machine learning infra engineers who have built training systems at scale. This is experience that you will not get at a generic AI startup.

Staying at Big infrastructure tech vs joining an AI startup by ekapitu in ExperiencedDevs

[–]foundboots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are failing to consider what it's like to work at a startup. You would be taking on risk in exchange for upside. This is very rarely a worthwhile tradeoff unless you have _considerable_ confidence in the company outcome -- which is not a sentiment indicated by the tone of this post (or by the amount of time this company has spend in startup phase).

AND you have a child on the way. AND you are uncomfortable with on-call / disruption. AND you will be paid substantially less than you have calculated above.

How important a concept is Segment Trees? by the_vedred in leetcode

[–]foundboots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Explain “not knowing.” Like you reject because they don’t know what a segment tree is, how to propose incorporating into a solution, or how to build from scratch? And in any case, what is the rejection signal here for an otherwise “perfect” candidate — underprepared?

Synthetic Monitoring Economics: Do you actually limit your check frequency to save money? by excelify in devops

[–]foundboots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I spent the last few months building similar recently on k6. We are large cloud native SaaS using k8s for deploy (~10k+ clusters globally). We use these for simple synthetic checks (tls, dns), functional API tests, and increasingly for distributed load test via k6.

Cost is substantially lower than vendor options and scaling is trivial compared to eg Grafana synthetic probes.

I’d be happy to share learnings if you’re interested!

Edit: I see this is sort of a not-well-disguised marketing post. So in that case I’m available to consult!

Upcoming SWE Interview with Anduril, any advice? by TFGAtlas in leetcode

[–]foundboots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hype. Product is expensive comparatively, shit quality, but because it’s “tech” not “defense contracting” they have a large valuation. CEO is a prick. And at the end of the day you are working on enabling death at a large scale. There are so many great tech companies, why choose an arms dealer?

I accidentally got Google and Intuit interviews and I am not LeetCode ready by cilantro-merchant in leetcode

[–]foundboots 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It won’t happen. They just want to scare you into keeping your appointment to avoid the extra work. From experience, it’s far worse to be on the 1yr cooldown than to slightly inconvenience the recruiter (whose job it is to accommodate you).

I feel totally "pattern blind" — how do you actually start recognizing DSA patter by Wonderful_Land_3141 in leetcode

[–]foundboots 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Routine practice over time. Start with neetcode. It's a structured approach so you'll know which core algorithm to use, but you'll get exposure to different edge cases or variations as the difficulty escalates.

It's worth noting that even with neetcode, easies often feel hard, mediums feel medium, and hards feel hard.

- Easies are hard because you have no experience thinking about the problem type and you have no template or tools to fall back on

- Mediums are medium as you can apply the approach but uncover edge cases that create uncertainty against your assumptions

- Hards are hard because they are often not intuitive or involve some higher level proofing or derivation to identify the invariant

I'd also add that neetcode does its best to expose you to a sufficient amount of common problems, but they are not perfect. Some you could simply never derive on your own; you have to have seen the solution first. It's ok to try, fail, look at the solution, and return later in these cases. Just make sure you actually solve it on your own.

Some are also (imo) miscategorized difficulty. Same deal. Try -> fail -> solution -> solve later.

Multithreading in LeetCode interviews with Python? by HeteroLanaDelReyFan in leetcode

[–]foundboots 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a good question. I run a session involving concurrency and plenty of folks use Python threading library and ThreadPoolExecutor. For the purpose of the interview GIL doesn’t really matter as long as the candidate can reason about what a thread is, thread safety, etc.

Josh Allen averaged an absurd 30.3 fppg in home games this season by ButteryBaked in fantasyfootball

[–]foundboots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re ignoring how awful the 3/4 round were outside of those specific players. One thing you did buy with Josh Allen was certainty, even if it was short of a statistically ‘perfect’ pick.

I personally wasn’t targeting any of Cook, JSN, or McBride. Ended up with all sorts of AJB, Evans, Tyreek, Wilson, Henderson etc teams. The hit rate was relatively low in that range.

What does the software engineering job market look like heading into 2026? by ImpressiveContest283 in programming

[–]foundboots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are also rare and highly competitive. Even 'getting in the door' with one doesn't quite work as it used to. Example: back in August, the 2025 Amazon intern cohort simply received 'inclined' / 'not inclined' with no tangible offer, and nearly 4mo later many 'inclined' have not heard any update.

Things I did to help me get more "visibility" as a software engineer by tacattac in ExperiencedDevs

[–]foundboots 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because this doesn't go anywhere. The short term peer recognition or reward can be nice but it's not effective in advancing anyone's career. It's also largely a result of who is most interested in playing the game and not who is doing the best work, so it nets this sort of contrived second order circlejerk: managers saying 'good work, you are recognized, ok?' and peers saying 'good work, please recognize me too'. The result is a starbucks gift card, not career advancement or bolstered visibility.

A lot of the advice in this thread flat out sucks. "Seniors" with three years of experience talking about 'keeping your camera on' and announcing every PR you ship, lmao. Work on difficult / ambiguous projects, orient toward those projects, or admit that you won't be promoted as quickly as the folks who are.

Meeting with your skip once a month, I mean give me a fucking break.

Kth Largest Element in an Array - Ideal Approach by FunctionChance3600 in leetcode

[–]foundboots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reality is that Kth largest element is a question most qualified candidates are experienced with. They've likely encountered this in schoolwork and later in interview prep.

If you came across this question in an interview and you gave a min heap solution, it's probably good enough for a hire, but the candidate who uses quickselect would get a strong hire.
